Abstract
Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) are high production volume chemicals used extensively as plasticizers, to increase the flexibility of the main polymer. They are reported to leach into their surroundings from plastic products and are now a ubiquitous environmental contaminant. Phthalate levels have been determined in several environmental matrices, especially in water. These levels serve as an indicator of plasticizer abuse and plastic pollution, and also serve as a route of exposure to different species including humans. Reports published on effects of different PAEs on experimental models demonstrate their carcinogenic, teratogenic, reproductive, and endocrine disruptive effects. Therefore, regular monitoring and remediation of environmental water samples is essential to ascertain their hazard quotient and daily exposure levels. This review summarises the extraction and detection techniques available for phthalate analysis in water samples such as chromatography, biosensors, immunoassays, and spectroscopy. Current remediation strategies for phthalate removal such as adsorption, advanced oxidation, and microbial degradation have also been highlighted.

Abstract
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a class of persistent organic pollutants, which cause serious harm to human health and ecological environment. Thus, a low-cost membrane was developed for highly effective removal and rapid surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection of PCBs by filling esterified-sawdust (CA-SD) modified with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) into solid phase extraction (SPE) column. SD was first modified by an esterification cross-linking strategy and then AgNPs were anchored on the CA-SD to prepare highly sensitive and reproducible SERS substrates (AgNPs/CA-SD). Due to the contraction of the surface area of the CA-SD caused by drying, the gap between the AgNPs could be reduced, thereby generating a large number of hot spots and driving more target molecules into them to obtain the enhanced SERS signals. The AgNPs/CA-SD-based SPE membrane showed excellent SERS activity with an enhancement factor of 5.98 × 108 for the R6G analysis. The proposed SERS-active SPE membrane with functionalization of mercapto-β-cyclodextrin was further developed for the determination of PCB-77 and PCB-1 with the LODs of 1.43 × 10-9 M and 2.12 × 10-8 M, respectively. In addition, each PCB in the mixed sample could be quickly distinguished based on the characteristic peaks. The current research exhibits great potential for the simultaneous detection of multiple environmental contaminants and can meet the needs of on-site emergency detection.

Abstract
Optical chemical sensors are widely applied in many fields of modern analytical practice, due to their simplicity in preparation and signal acquisition, low costs, and fast response time. Moreover, the construction of most modern optical sensors requires neither wire connections with the detector nor sophisticated and energy-consuming hardware, enabling wireless sensor development for a fast, in-field and online analysis. In this review, the last five years of progress (from 2017 to 2021) in the field of optical chemical sensors development for persistent organic pollutants (POPs) is provided. The operating mechanisms, the transduction principles and the types of sensing materials employed in single selective optical sensors and in multisensory systems are reviewed. The selected examples of optical sensors applications are reported to demonstrate the benefits and drawbacks of optical chemical sensor use for POPs assessment.

Abstract
A surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate of silver nanorod modified with graphene and silver nanorod (AgNR@Graphene@AgNR) has been fabricated to improve the sensitivity of SERS detection of hydrophobic pollutants, in which, graphene is an interlayer and AgNR is arranged on both sides of the graphene. The embedded graphene could help the oblique V-shaped AgNR structure to improve the sensitivity of SERS detection with a significant electric field enhancement effect. The annealing treatment of the substrate, shortening the nanometer gap between the graphene and AgNR, is benefit for producing a large number of "hot spots" at the fold, which has been verified by the finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulation. The enhancement factor (EF) of AgNR@Graphene@AgNR could reach up to 1.6 × 108 with a good reproducibility. The substrate could achieve high-sensitivity detection of 4-chlorobiphenyl (PCB-3) and 3, 3', 4, 4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (PCB-77) with the limit of detections (LODs) of 1.72 × 10-10 M and 2.11 × 10-8 M, and the effective identification of PCBs mixture has been realized through principal component analysis (PCA), which means that the AgNR@Graphene@AgNR substrate has a potential significance for the detection and analysis of hydrophobic pollutant mixtures in the environment.

Abstract
Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) embody highly lipophilic hazardous chemicals that are being phased out globally. Due to their persistent nature, they are still contaminating the environment, being classified as persistent organic pollutants (POPs). They bioaccumulate through bioconcentration and biomagnification, leading to elevated concentrations at higher trophic levels. Studies show that human long-term exposure to OCPs is correlated with a large panel of common chronic diseases. Due to toxicity concerns, most OCPs are listed as persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Conventionally, separation techniques such as gas chromatography are used to analyze OCPs (e.g., gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS)) or electron capture detection (GC/ECD). These are accurate, but expensive and time-consuming methods, which can only be performed in centralized lab environments after extensive pretreatment of the collected samples. Thus, researchers are continuously fueling the need to pursue new faster and less expensive alternatives for their detection and quantification that can be used in the field, possibly in miniaturized lab-on-a-chip systems. In this context, surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) represents an exceptional analytical tool for the trace detection of pollutants, offering molecular fingerprint-type data and high sensitivity. For maximum signal amplification, two conditions are imposed: an efficient substrate and a high affinity toward the analyte. Unfortunately, due to the highly hydrophobic nature of these pollutants (OCPs,) they usually have a low affinity toward SERS substrates, increasing the challenge in their SERS detection. In order to overcome this limitation and take advantage of on-site Raman analysis of pollutants, researchers are devising ingenious strategies that are synthetically discussed in this review paper. Aiming to maximize the weak Raman signal of organochlorine pesticides, current practices of increasing the substrate's performance, along with efforts in improving the selectivity by SERS substrate functionalization meant to adsorb the OCPs in close proximity (via covalent, electrostatic or hydrophobic bonds), are both discussed. Moreover, the prospects of multiplex analysis are also approached. Finally, other perspectives for capturing such hydrophobic molecules (MIPs-molecularly imprinted polymers, immunoassays) and SERS coupled techniques (microfluidics-SERS, electrochemistry-SERS) to overcome some of the restraints are presented.

Abstract
Several spectroscopic techniques have been optimized to check extra-virgin olive oil quality and authenticity, as well as to detect eventual adulterations. These methods are usually complementary and can give information about different olive oil chemical components with bioactive and antioxidant properties. In the present work, a well-characterized set of extra-virgin olive oil (cultivar Frantoio) samples from a specific area of Tuscany (Italy) were investigated by combining near UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to identify and quantify different chemical components, such as pigments, secoiridoids and squalene, related to the nutritional and quality properties of olive oils. Moreover, the pigmentation index of olives, organoleptic and sensory properties, total phenolic compound contents and the lipidic fractions of olive oils were investigated. The results obtained are, finally, compared and discussed in order to correlate several properties of both olives and olive oils with specific features of the cultivation area.

Abstract
The accumulation of organochlorines (OCs) in mussel tissue depends on the physiological and biochemical status of the organism and its interaction with the environment. Mytilus galloprovincialis, 2- and 1-year-old mussels, sampled from Mali Ston Bay, a reference area, and transplanted to Kaštela Bay in cages, were used for the assessment of OC levels and influence of biological parameters on accumulation. Results of bimonthly exposures during one year highlighted that OC accumulation decreases with increasing mussel age. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and p,p′-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (p,p′-DDTs) increased, while organochlorine pesticide (OCP; i.e., HCB, lindane, heptachlor, and aldrin) variations were very low. Statistical analysis generally did not confirm the significant effect of lipid content on the accumulation of OCs in mussel tissue. OC levels in mussels were below the maximum permitted levels for human consumption (European Commission).
