Improved A-Star Search Algorithm for Probabilistic Air Pollution Detection Using UAVs

Recently, air pollution problems in urban areas have become serious, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can be used to monitor air pollution because they can perform spatial movement. However, because air pollution sources are fluid, probabilistic search methods are required to identify a target through the probability of its existence. This study proposes an efficient algorithm to detect air pollution in urban areas using UAVs. An improved A-star algorithm that can efficiently perform searches based on a probabilistic search model using a UAV is designed. In particular, in the proposed improved A-star algorithm, several special weights are used to calculate the probability of target existence. For example, a heuristic weight based on the expected target, a weight based on data collected from the drone sensor, and a weight based on the prior information of obstacles presence are determined. The method and procedure for applying the proposed algorithm to the stochastic search environment of a drone are described. Finally, the superiority of the proposed improved A-star algorithm is demonstrated by comparing it with existing stochastic search algorithms through various practical simulations. The proposed method exhibited more than 45% better performance in terms of successful search rounds compared with existing methods.

Air pollution forecasting based on wireless communications: review

The development of contemporary artificial intelligence (AI) methods such as artificial neural networks (ANNs) has given researchers around the world new opportunities to address climate change and air quality issues. The small size, low cost, and low power consumption of sensors can facilitate obtaining the values of polluting gases in the atmosphere. However, several problems with using air pollution technique relate to various effects such as sensing accuracy, sensor drifts, and sluggish reactions to changes in pollution levels. Recently, machine learning has made it feasible to build a more intelligent, context-aware system that can anticipate events and monitor present conditions. This paper focuses on the use of environment sensors for detecting air pollution based on several types of wireless protocols, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ZigBee, LoRa, Global Positioning System (GPS), and 4G/5G. Furthermore, it classifies previous published articles on the topic according to the wireless protocol and compared in terms of several performance metrics such as the adopted air pollution sensors, hardware platform, adopted algorithm, power consumption or power savings, and sensing accuracy. In addition, this work highlights the challenges and limitations facing drones during their mission for detecting air pollution. As a result, we suggest to build and implement at base station an intelligent system based on backpropagation (BP) neural networks, which provides flexibility to track and predict the true values of polluting gases in the atmosphere to overcome the above problems. Finally, this work addresses the advantages of using drones in the air pollution field.

Identifying spatiotemporal information of the point pollutant source indoors based on the adjoint-regularization method

Fast and accurate identification of the pollutant source location and release rate is important for improving indoor air quality. From the perspective of public health, identification of the airborne pathogen source in public buildings is particularly important for ensuring people's safety and health. The existing adjoint probability method has difficulty in distinguishing the temporal source, and the optimization algorithm can only analyze a few potential sources in space. This study proposed an algorithm combining the adjoint-pulse and regularization methods to identify the spatiotemporal information of the point pollutant source in an entire room space. We first obtained a series of source-receptor response matrices using the adjoint-pulse method in the room based on the validated CFD model, and then used the regularization method and composite Bayesian inference to identify the release rate and location of the dynamic pollutant source. The results showed that the MAPEs (mean absolute percentage errors) of estimated source intensities were almost less than 15%, and the source localization success rates were above 25/30 in this study. This method has the potential to be used to identify the airborne pathogen source in public buildings combined with sensors for disease-specific biomarkers.

A Study of Modified Infotaxis Algorithms in 2D and 3D Turbulent Environments

Emergency response to hazardous gases in the environment is an important research field in environmental monitoring. In recent years, with the rapid development of sensor technology and mobile device technology, more autonomous search algorithms for hazardous gas emission sources are proposed in uncertain environment, which can avoid emergency personnel from contacting hazardous gas in a short distance. Infotaxis is an autonomous search strategy without a concentration gradient, which uses scattered sensor data to track the location of the release source in turbulent environment. This paper optimizes the imbalance of exploitation and exploration in the reward function of Infotaxis algorithm and proposes a mobile strategy for the three-dimensional scene. In two-dimensional and three-dimensional scenes, the average steps of search tasks are used as the evaluation criteria to analyze the information trend algorithm combined with different reward functions and mobile strategies. The results show that the balance between the exploitation item and exploration item of the reward function proposed in this paper is better than that of the reward function in the Infotaxis algorithm, no matter in the two-dimensional scenes or in the three-dimensional scenes.

Flight and Interaction Control of an Innovative Ducted Fan Aerial Manipulator

An innovative aerial manipulator with ducted fans is proposed to achieve side-on aerial manipulation tasks in a confined environment, such as canopy sampling in dense forests. The dynamic model of the novel design is studied, and on this basis a composite controller is proposed to address the challenges of arm extension and physical interaction during the manipulation process. An adaptive controller is proposed for the aerial platform to achieve good stability and tracking performance under the manipulator motion, and an impedance controller is designed for the manipulator to ensure compliance and stability during physical contact. The experimental tests validate the effectiveness of the proposed prototype structure and controller design.
