Characterising Particulate Organic Nitrogen at A Savannah-Grassland Region in South Africa

Chemical Fingerprinting of Biomass Burning Organic Aerosols from Sugar Cane Combustion: Complementary Findings from Field and Laboratory Studies

Agricultural fires are a major source of biomass-burning organic aerosols (BBOAs) with impacts on health, the environment, and climate. In this study, globally relevant BBOA emissions from the combustion of sugar cane in both field and laboratory experiments were analyzed using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The derived chemical fingerprints of fresh emissions were evaluated using targeted and nontargeted evaluation approaches. The open-field sugar cane burning experiments revealed the high chemical complexity of combustion emissions, including compounds derived from the pyrolysis of (hemi)cellulose, lignin, and further biomass, such as pyridine and oxime derivatives, methoxyphenols, and methoxybenzenes, as well as triterpenoids. In comparison, laboratory experiments could only partially model the complexity of real combustion events. Our results showed high variability between the conducted field and laboratory experiments, which we, among others, discuss in terms of differences in combustion conditions, fuel composition, and atmospheric processing. We conclude that both field and laboratory studies have their merits and should be applied complementarily. While field studies under real-world conditions are essential to assess the general impact on air quality, climate, and environment, laboratory studies are better suited to investigate specific emissions of different biomass types under controlled conditions.

A Molecular Dynamic Study of the Effects of Surface Partitioning on the OH Radical Interactions with Solutes in Multicomponent Aqueous Aerosols

The surface-bulk partitioning of small saccharide and amide molecules in aqueous droplets was investigated using molecular dynamics. The air-particle interface was modeled using a 80 Å cubic water box containing a series of organic molecules and surrounded by gaseous OH radicals. The properties of the organic solutes within the interface and the water bulk were examined at a molecular level using density profiles and radial pair distribution functions. Molecules containing only polar functional groups such as urea and glucose are found predominantly in the water bulk, forming an exclusion layer near the water surface. Substitution of a single polar group by an alkyl group in sugars and amides leads to the migration of the molecule toward the interface. Within the first 2 nm from the water surface, surface-active solutes lose their rotational freedom and adopt a preferred orientation with the alkyl group pointing toward the surface. The different packing within the interface leads to different solvation shell structures and enhanced interaction between the organic molecules and absorbed OH radicals. The simulations provide quantitative information about the dimension, composition, and organization of the air-water interface as well as about the nonreactive interaction of the OH radicals with the organic solutes. It suggests that increased concentrations, preferred orientations, and decreased solvation near the air-water surface may lead to differences in reactivities between surface-active and surface-inactive molecules. The results are important to explain how heterogeneous oxidation mechanisms and kinetics within interfaces may differ from those of the bulk.

Morphological characteristics of amino acids in wet deposition of Danjiangkou Reservoir in China's South-to-North Water Diversion Project

Amino acids are an important constituent in organic nitrogen deposition, and changes in the content of their components have a direct impact on the nitrogen input to the ecosystem. From December 2018 to November 2019, 176 precipitation samples were collected at Danjiangkou Reservoir, the source of the middle line of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, and the variation characteristics of dissolved free amino acids (DFAA) and dissolved combined amino acids (DCAA) were analyzed. The volume-weighted value concentration ranges of DFAA and DCAA were 0.159-1.136 μmol/L and 1.603-7.044 μmol/L, respectively, and amino acids were dominated by DCAA in wet deposition. Our results showed that glutamic acid (Glu), glycine (Gly), and aspartic acid (Asp) were the dominant amino acids in both DFAA and DCAA. The concentration of DFAA was highest in winter, while the concentration of DCAA was in autumn. Dissolved total amino acids (DTAA) were insignificantly correlated with DFAA, whereas they were linearly correlated with DCAA, indicating a significant influence of agricultural activities on DTAA. The analysis of the backward trajectory of air masses showed that amino acids were mainly influenced by proximity inputs around the reservoir. The bioavailability of organic matter was higher in the southeastern of the reservoir than in the northwestern. The wet deposition flux of TDN was 14.096 kg N/ha/year, and the potential ecological impact on water bodies cannot be ignored. This study was conducted to clarify the variation characteristics of amino acids fractions in wet deposition and to provide parameters for regional assessment of amino acids wet deposition. The ecological impact of nitrogen wet deposition on water bodies will be explored to provide a basis for nitrogen pollution control and water quality protection in the middle line of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project.

Chemical characteristics and sources of nitrogen-containing organic compounds at a regional site in the North China Plain during the transition period of autumn and winter

Organic nitrogen constitutes a significant fraction of the nitrogen budget in particulate matter (PM). However, the composition and sources of nitrogen-containing organic compounds (NOCs) in PM remain unclear currently in North China Plain (NCP), China. Rare local or regional studies on NOCs were conducted. In this study, ambient fine particles (PM_2.5) were collected in Xianghe, a regional background site in NCP, from 26 October to 26 December 2017. The insights from this study include NOC molecule identification, concentration level, and NOC sources and origins. Specifically, we have identified and quantified >90 NOC species, with urea being the most abundant, accounting for 39.7 ± 4.7% of the total NOC followed by free amino acids (FAAs; 21.9 ± 1.5%), cyclic NOCs (15.3 ± 4.5%), amines (14.8 ± 1.5%), alkyl amides (5.8 ± 0.5%), isocyanates (1.7 ± 0.2%), and nitriles (1.1 ± 0.2%). The time series of FAAs was well correlated (r = 0.51-0.68, p < 0.01) with the organic marker of levoglucosan and was moderately correlated with O_x (r = 0.29-0.41, p < 0.01), suggesting biomass burning and secondary formation were important FAAs sources. We also show that amines can be oxidized and/or reacted by aqueous-phase processing to form secondary aerosols, which are further enhanced by the involvement of iron in the catalytic process. Using the receptor model of positive matrix factorization (PMF), six factors were identified including coal combustion, crustal sources, biomass burning, industry-related sources, traffic emissions, and secondary aerosols. Source apportionment of NOC shows biomass burning was the dominant factor, accounting for 31.8% of the total NOCs. This study provides a unique dataset of NOCs at this regional background site in the NCP, with the insights of NOC chemical composition and sources gained in this study being important for future NOC modeling as well as NOC health effects studies.

Edible Oil Parameters during Deterioration Processes

With the continuous increase in research on lipids, technologies and the development of chemical-analytical methods associated with the characterization and monitoring of different processes that involve modifications in edible fats are increasing. The beneficial effect of lipids, especially those essential for the health of the population, is widely known. However, degradation compounds are also produced that eventually have negative effects. In this dual context, the monitoring of the changes suffered by nutritional compounds can be obtained thanks to the development of technologies and analytical methods applied to the study of lipids. The modifications that lipids undergo can be followed by a wide variety of methods, ranging from the basic ones associated with simple chemical titrations to the more complex ones associated with sophisticated laboratory equipment. These determinations involve chemical and/or physical quantification of lipids to know an initial condition on the major and minor components. In addition to technologies that allow monitoring during more complex processes such as thermal deterioration, in multiple conditions depending on the objective of the study, this review could benefit a comprehensive understanding of lipid deterioration for future developments and research in the study of fats and oils for human consumption.
