Influence of Three Probiotics Strains, Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. Lactis BB-12 and Saccharomyces boulardii CNCM I-745 on the Biochemical and Haematological Profiles and Body Weight of Healthy Rabbits

Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG alleviates sleep deprivation-induced intestinal barrier dysfunction and neuroinflammation in mice

Consuming probiotic products is a solution that people are willing to choose to augment health. As a global health hazard, sleep deprivation (SD) can cause both physical and mental diseases. The present study investigated the protective effects of Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG), a widely used probiotic, on a SD mouse model. Here, it has been shown that SD induced intestinal damage in mice, while LGG supplementation attenuated disruption of the intestinal barrier and enhanced the antioxidant capacity. Microbiome analysis revealed that SD caused dysbiosis in the gut microbiota, characterized by increased levels of Clostridium XlVa, Alistipes, and Desulfovibrio, as well as decreased levels of Ruminococcus, which were partially ameliorated by LGG. Moreover, SD resulted in elevated pro-inflammatory cytokine concentrations in both the intestine and the brain, while LGG provided protection in both organs. LGG supplementation significantly improved locomotor activity in SD mice. Although heat-killed LGG showed some protective effects in SD mice, its overall efficacy was inferior to that of live LGG. In terms of mechanism, it was found that AG1478, an inhibitor of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase, could diminish the protective effects of LGG. In conclusion, LGG demonstrated the ability to alleviate SD-induced intestinal barrier dysfunction through EGFR activation and alleviate neuroinflammation.

Effects of Dietary Supplementation of Lactobacillus acidophilus on Blood Parameters and Gut Health of Rabbits

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Lactobacillus acidophilus D2/CSL (L-1 × 109 cfu/kg feed/day) on biochemical parameters, faecal score (FS), cecal pH, gut morphometry, microbiota and cecal short-chain fatty acid (SCFAs) in rabbits. Three zootechnical trials were performed and in each trial 30 rabbits were allotted to two groups; a probiotic group (L) and a control group (C). At slaughter (day 45), samples of blood, duodenum, jejunum, ileum, liver and spleen were collected and submitted to histomorphometric analyses. Blood biochemical analyses, cecal microbiota and SCFAs determination were also performed. In trial 1 and 3, L. acidophilus D2/CSL did not affect productive parameters (p > 0.05). However, L group of trial 1 showed a lower morbidity and mortality compared to the control. In trial 2, C group showed a higher daily feed intake (p = 0.018) and a positive statistical tendency for live weight and average daily gain (p = 0.068). On the contrary, albumin was higher and ALFA-1 globulin was lower in the C group compared to L (p < 0.05). In all the trials, FS, cecal pH, histomorphometry, microbiota and SCFAs were unaffected. In conclusion, L. acidophilus D2/CSL did not impair growth performances, gut and rabbit’s health, reducing morbidity and mortality.

Biocontrol of Candida albicans by Antagonistic Microorganisms and Bioactive Compounds

Candida albicans is an endogenous opportunistic pathogenic fungus that is harmless when the host system remains stable. However, C. albicans could seriously threaten human life and health when the body’s immune function declines or the normal flora is out of balance. Due to the increasing resistance of candidiasis to existing drugs, it is important to find new strategies to help treat this type of systemic fungal disease. Biological control is considered as a promising strategy which is more friendly and safer. In this review, we compare the bacteriostatic behavior of different antagonistic microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) against C. albicans. In addition, natural products with unique structures have attracted researchers’ attention. Therefore, the bioactive nature products produced by different microorganisms and their possible inhibitory mechanisms are also reviewed. The application of biological control strategies and the discovery of new compounds with antifungal activity will reduce the resistance of C. albicans, thereby promoting the development of novel diverse antifungal drugs.

Effects of probiotic Lactiplantibacillus plantarum IMC 510 supplementation on metabolic factors in otherwise healthy overweight and obese individuals

AIMS

Probiotic supplementation approach offers the possibility to shape the gut microbiota (GM), enabling the development of innovative formulations able to improve intestinal wellbeing and consequently the related body weight modulation and energy metabolism. In the present clinical study, a new potential probiotic supplement based on Lactiplantibacillus plantarum IMC 510 was studied for weight management.

METHODS AND RESULTS

Quantitative characterization by qPCR of representative bacterial groups of GM was used to determine the microbiota modulation at different supplementation periods. Furthermore, measurement of the endpoints linked to weight control (Body Mass Index (BMI), body weight, waist circumference) was assessed. Specific questionnaires to evaluate the impact on psychological and physiological point of view were performed. Results showed that after 90 days - Lact. plantarum IMC 510 supplementation brought an improvement of endpoints linked to weight control and healthy status, although no significant changes in the microbiota composition were reported for analysed bacterial groups, except for Lactobacillus spp. and Bifidobacterium spp.

CONCLUSIONS

We concluded that Lact. plantarum IMC 510 supplementation could be an interesting tool for weight management. More studies are needed to understand the impact on GM, for example evaluating the production of short chain fatty acids (SCFA), since their important role in dietary metabolism. Further research is necessary to better elucidate the relationship between GM and overweight and the mechanism of action by which Lact. plantarum IMC 510 modifies body weight.

SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY

However, these promising outcomes represent a clear advantage of probiotic supplementation and identify a new potential probiotic as a novel and safe therapeutic approach in the obesity prevention and management.
