Functional Ionic Liquids Decorated Carbon Hybrid Nanomaterials for the Electrochemical Biosensors

Cancer stands as one of the most impactful illnesses in the modern world, primarily owing to its lethal consequences. The fundamental concern in this context likely stems from delayed diagnoses in patients. Hence, detecting various forms of cancer is imperative. A formidable challenge in cancer research has been the diagnosis and treatment of this disease. Early cancer diagnosis is crucial, as it significantly influences subsequent therapeutic steps. Despite substantial scientific efforts, accurately and swiftly diagnosing cancer remains a formidable challenge. It is well known that the field of cancer diagnosis has effectively included electrochemical approaches. Combining the remarkable selectivity of biosensing components-such as aptamers, antibodies, or nucleic acids-with electrochemical sensor systems has shown positive outcomes. In this study, we adapt a novel electrochemical biosensor for cancer detection. This biosensor, based on a glassy carbon electrode, incorporates a nanocomposite of reduced graphene oxide/Fe3O4/Nafion/polyaniline. We elucidated the modification process using SEM, TEM, FTIR, RAMAN, VSM, and electrochemical methods. To optimize the experimental conditions and monitor the immobilization processes, electrochemical techniques such as CV, EIS, and SWV were employed. The calibration graph has a linear range of 102-106 cells mL-1, with a detection limit of 5 cells mL-1.

Effects of Zwitterions on Structural Anomalies in Ionic Liquid Glasses Studied by EPR

Ionic liquids (ILs) form a variety of nanostructures due to their amphiphilic nature. Recently, unusual structural phenomena have been found in glassy ILs near their glass transition temperatures; however, in all studied cases, IL cations and anions were in the form of separate moieties. In this work, we investigate for the first time such structural anomalies in zwitterionic IL glasses (ZILs), where the cation and anion are bound in a single molecule. Such binding reasonably restricts mutual diffusion of cations and anions, leading to modification of nano-ordering and character of structural anomalies in these glassy nanomaterials, as has been investigated using Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. In particular, the occurrence of structural anomalies in ZIL glasses was revealed, and their characteristic temperatures were found to be higher compared to common ILs of a similar structure. Altogether, this work broadens the scope of structural anomalies in ionic liquid glasses and indicates new routes to tune their properties.

Recent Developments in the Design and Fabrication of Electrochemical Biosensors Using Functional Materials and Molecules

Electrochemical biosensors are superior technologies that are used to detect or sense biologically and environmentally significant analytes in a laboratory environment, or even in the form of portable handheld or wearable electronics. Recently, imprinted and implantable biosensors are emerging as point-of-care devices, which monitor the target analytes in a continuous environment and alert the intended users to anomalies. The stability and performance of the developed biosensor depend on the nature and properties of the electrode material or the platform on which the biosensor is constructed. Therefore, the biosensor platform plays an integral role in the effectiveness of the developed biosensor. Enormous effort has been dedicated to the rational design of the electrode material and to fabrication strategies for improving the performance of developed biosensors. Every year, in the search for multifarious electrode materials, thousands of new biosensor platforms are reported. Moreover, in order to construct an effectual biosensor, the researcher should familiarize themself with the sensible strategies behind electrode fabrication. Thus, we intend to shed light on various strategies and methodologies utilized in the design and fabrication of electrochemical biosensors that facilitate sensitive and selective detection of significant analytes. Furthermore, this review highlights the advantages of various electrode materials and the correlation between immobilized biomolecules and modified surfaces.

Graphene-Based Electrochemical Biosensors for Breast Cancer Detection

Breast cancer (BC) is the most common cancer in women, which is also the second most public cancer worldwide. When detected early, BC can be treated more easily and prevented from spreading beyond the breast. In recent years, various BC biosensor strategies have been studied, including optical, electrical, electrochemical, and mechanical biosensors. In particular, the high sensitivity and short detection time of electrochemical biosensors make them suitable for the recognition of BC biomarkers. Moreover, the sensitivity of the electrochemical biosensor can be increased by incorporating nanomaterials. In this respect, the outstanding mechanical and electrical performances of graphene have led to an increasingly intense study of graphene-based materials for BC electrochemical biosensors. Hence, the present review examines the latest advances in graphene-based electrochemical biosensors for BC biosensing. For each biosensor, the detection limit (LOD), linear range (LR), and diagnosis technique are analyzed. This is followed by a discussion of the prospects and current challenges, along with potential strategies for enhancing the performance of electrochemical biosensors.

Ionic Liquid-Based Polymer Nanocomposites for Sensors, Energy, Biomedicine, and Environmental Applications: Roadmap to the Future

Current interest toward ionic liquids (ILs) stems from some of their novel characteristics, like low vapor pressure, thermal stability, and nonflammability, integrated through high ionic conductivity and broad range of electrochemical strength. Nowadays, ionic liquids represent a new category of chemical-based compounds for developing superior and multifunctional substances with potential in several fields. ILs can be used in solvents such as salt electrolyte and additional materials. By adding functional physiochemical characteristics, a variety of IL-based electrolytes can also be used for energy storage purposes. It is hoped that the present review will supply guidance for future research focused on IL-based polymer nanocomposites electrolytes for sensors, high performance, biomedicine, and environmental applications. Additionally, a comprehensive overview about the polymer-based composites' ILs components, including a classification of the types of polymer matrix available is provided in this review. More focus is placed upon ILs-based polymeric nanocomposites used in multiple applications such as electrochemical biosensors, energy-related materials, biomedicine, actuators, environmental, and the aviation and aerospace industries. At last, existing challenges and prospects in this field are discussed and concluding remarks are provided.
