On-Chip Electromembrane Surrounded Solid Phase Microextraction for Determination of Tricyclic Antidepressants from Biological Fluids Using Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-Graphene Oxide Nanocomposite as a Fiber Coating

Sustainable beeswax modified cellulose paper for the determination of tricyclic antidepressants in biofluids

This article describes the synthesis of sorptive phases for bioanalysis based on the modification of cellulose paper with natural beeswax as sorbent, resulting in a substrate completely renewable and sustainable. The preparation of the sorptive phases consisted of the dissolution of beeswax in hexane, followed by its drop-casting on cellulose paper and subsequent evaporation of the solvent. The beeswax modification of paper renders it hydrophobic, enabling the extraction of the target analytes, i.e., imipramine, desipramine, amitriptyline and trimipramine, via hydrophobic interactions. The main variables affecting the extraction performance were investigated (e.g., pH, ionic strength, extraction time, eluent composition, agitation speed). The analytical workflow combines a straightforward sampling, simultaneous extraction of 30 samples in 1 h, and the rapid (<2 min) determination of the analytes via direct infusion mass spectrometry. The method provided limits of detection in the range 2.0 and 3.2 μg L-1, and the precision, expressed as relative standard deviation, was better than 5.4 % and 8.5 % for intra and inter-day analyses, respectively. The accuracy, in terms of relative recovery, ranged from 90 % to 121 % using saliva as model biofluid.

Electroextraction of methylene blue from aqueous environmental samples using paper points coupled with hollow fiber membranes

This article introduces a novel approach by coupling paper points with hollow fiber membrane for electroextraction (PP-HF-EE). The method was innovatively applied to extract methylene blue (MB) from large water volumes (up to 580 mL). A comprehensive study of six key parameters - organic filter, acceptor and donor phase composition, extraction time, applied voltage, and sample volume - was conducted using conventional flatbed scanning and digital image analysis. Our results revealed that extraction performance was primarily influenced by time, with low voltages (50 V) and low-conductivity organic filters (1-decanol) yielding comparable results to higher settings (300 V or 1-pentanol). Under optimized conditions (50 V, 60 min, 1-decanol as the organic filter), analytical performance parameters were assessed, demonstrating acceptable precision (RSD <18% for intra- and inter-day measurements) within a linear range of 5-100 μg L-1 (r = 0.98). PP-HF-EE demonstrated reliability through stable and reproducible electric current measurements during all extraction studies. Utilizing an extremely cost-effective detection system, PP-HF-EE achieved detection limits in the low ppb range, highlighting its potential as a promising variation of electromembrane extraction for environmental sample analysis.

Preparation of poly (methacrylic acid)/graphene oxide aerogel as solid-phase extraction adsorbent for extraction and determination of dopamine and tyrosine in urine of patients with depression

Dopamine (DA) and l-tyrosine (l-Tyr) are neurotransmitters involved in various neuropsychiatric disorders. Therefore, it is important to monitor their levels for diagnosis and treatment. In this study, we synthesized poly (methacrylic acid)/graphene oxide aerogels (p(MAA)/GOA) by in situ polymerization and freeze-drying using graphene oxide and methacrylic acid as substrates. Then, the p(MAA)/GOA were applied as solid-phase extraction adsorbents to extract DA and l-Tyr from urine samples, followed by quantification using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The p(MAA)/GOA showed better adsorption performance for DA and l-Tyr than commercial adsorbents, likely as a result of the strong adsorption of the target analytes via π-π and hydrogen bonding interactions. Further, the developed method had good linearity (r > 0.9990) at concentrations of DA and l-Tyr of 0.075-2.0 and 0.75-20.0 μg mL^-1, respectively, as well as a limit of detection of 0.018-0.048 μg mL^-1, limit of quantitation of 0.059-0.161 μg mL^-1, spiked recovery of 91.1-104.0%, and interday precision of 3.58-7.30%.The method was successfully applied to determine DA and l-Tyr in the urine samples of patients suffering from depression, demonstrating its potential for clinical applications.
