Recent Advances in Silicon Quantum Dot-Based Fluorescent Biosensors

Innovative detection mechanism for deltamethrin based on a dual-emitting Fluoroprobe and its application in a smartphone-based photoelectric conversion device

Pyrethroids are widely used insecticides worldwide, while their on-site and rapid detection still faces technological challenges. Herein, an innovative detection mechanism was designed for deltamethrin, a typical kind of type II pyrethroids, based on a dual-emitting fluoroprobe consisting of NH2-SiQDs and Eu3+. Deltamethrin can rapidly hydrolyze into 3-phenoxybenzaldehyde (3-PBD) and react specifically with fluoroprobe, causing fluorescence quenching of SiQDs while maintaining the fluorescent stability of Eu3+. Building upon the above fluorescence-responsive principle, SiQDs@Eu3+ provided satisfactorily dual-emitting signals, realizing the highly-selective and sensitive detection of deltamethrin. Correlation between the surface structure of SiQDs and their absorption spectra was in-depth unraveled by TD-DFT calculation and FT-IR analysis. As for the analytical performance, the recovery and LOD of deltamethrin in lettuce, provided by SiQDs@Eu3+, were comparable or even superior over conventional chromatographic analysis. Meanwhile, an innovative smartphone-based optical device was developed, which greatly decreased errors caused by the previously reported smartphone-based fluorescence detection.

Solvent-Assisted Structural Modifications of Sulfur Dots Followed by Time-Dependent Emergence of a New Emissive State and Long-Lived Afterglow

Sulfur dots are a new class of recently developed nonmetallic luminescent nanomaterials with various potential applications. Herein, we synthesized sulfur dots using a mild chemical etching method and then modified the structural features of the as-synthesized sulfur dots using a slow and defined solvent-assisted aggregation process. This increases the particle size and overall crystallinity along with the modifications of the surface functional groups, which eventually show a new emission band at longer wavelengths. Detailed photophysical and temperature-dependent luminescence studies confirmed that the new emissive state evolves due to interparticle interactions in the excited state. Furthermore, the occurrence of a new emissive state in a longer-wavelength region helped reduce the energy gap between the lowest excited singlet state and the lowest excited triplet state in modified sulfur dots, resulting in an aqueous stable room-temperature phosphorescence/afterglow emission through efficient intersystem crossing. This typical efficacious afterglow emission directly shows the potential applicability of structurally modified sulfur dots in encryption devices and can also be potentially effective in light emitting diodes (LED) and sensing devices.

Highly-ordered assembled organic fluorescent materials for high-resolution bio-sensing: a review

Organic fluorescent materials (OFMs) play a crucial role in the development of biosensors, enabling the extraction of biochemical information within cells and organisms, extending to the human body. Concurrently, OFM biosensors contribute significantly to the progress of modern medical and biological research. However, the practical applications of OFM biosensors face challenges, including issues related to low resolution, dispersivity, and stability. To overcome these challenges, scientists have introduced interactive elements to enhance the order of OFMs. Highly-ordered assembled OFMs represent a novel material type applied to biosensors. In comparison to conventional fluorescent materials, highly-ordered assembled OFMs typically exhibit robust anti-diffusion properties, high imaging contrast, and excellent stability. This approach has emerged as a promising method for effectively tracking bio-signals, particularly in the non-invasive monitoring of chronic diseases. This review introduces several highly-ordered assembled OFMs used in biosensors and also discusses various interactions that are responsible for their assembly, such as hydrogen bonding, π-π interaction, dipole-dipole interaction, and ion electrostatic interaction. Furthermore, it delves into the various applications of these biosensors while addressing the drawbacks that currently limit their commercial application. This review aims to provide a theoretical foundation for designing high-performance, highly-ordered assembled OFM biosensors suitable for practical applications. Additionally, it sheds light on the evolving trends in OFM biosensors and their application fields, offering valuable insights into the future of this dynamic research area.

Nanomaterials for Fluorescent Detection of Hemoglobin

Hemoglobin plays a vital role in a series of biological activities. Abnormal levels of hemoglobin in blood are associated with many clinical diseases. Therefore, development of simple and accurate methods for sensing hemoglobin is of considerable significance. The blowout advancement in nanotechnology has urged the use of different types of fluorescent nanomaterials for hemoglobin assay. The past decades have witnessed the rapid progress of fluorescent nanosensors for hemoglobin assay. In the review, the sensing principles of fluorescent nanomaterials for sensing hemoglobin were briefly discussed. The advances of fluorescent nanosensors for detection of hemoglobin were further highlighted. And the sensing performance of fluorescent nanosensors versus traditional detection approaches was compared. Finally, the challenges and future directions of fluorescent nanomaterials for detection of hemoglobin are discussed. The review will arouse much more attention to the construction of hemoglobin sensors and facilitate rapid development of fluorescent nanosensors of hemoglobin.
