The potential of thermally expanded graphite in oil sorption applications

An oil spill occurs when liquid petroleum hydrocarbons are released into the environment, whether accidentally or intentionally, in substantial quantities. The impact of an oil spill on the ecosystem is significant and should not be underestimated. Various techniques are employed to address oil spills, including mechanical, physical, biological, and physicochemical methods. Among these techniques, adsorption is considered the most suitable approach. Adsorption is promising due to its simplicity, ease of use, high removal capacity, and rapid pollutant removal. An excellent adsorbent material exhibits unique characteristics that enhance its efficacy in liquid adsorption. Sorbents are categorized into synthetic and natural types. Porous carbon materials, especially expanded graphite, are widely utilized in wastewater treatment due to their micropores and exceptional adsorption capacity. The distinctive properties of expanded graphite, including its low density, high porosity, and electrical conductivity, have garnered significant global attention for various potential applications. In essence, expanded graphite offers a powerful and practical approach to oil spill cleanup due to its efficient oil adsorption, selective targeting, ease of use, and potential reusability. This review article summarizes the preparation techniques, structure, and properties of expanded graphite. It also delves into recent advancements in using expanded graphite for oil spill cleanup. The article concludes by outlining potential future directions in this field and discussing the commercial viability of some of these techniques.

Zeolites with Divalent Ions as Carriers in the Delivery of Epigallocatechin Gallate

Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is a compound with very high therapeutic potential in the treatment of osteoporosis and cancer. The disadvantages of this compound are its low stability and low bioavailability. Therefore, carriers for EGCG are sought to increase its use. In this work, new carriers are proposed, i.e., zeolites containing divalent ions of magnesium, calcium, strontium, and zinc in their structure. EGCG is retained on the carrier surface by strong interactions with divalent ions. Due to the presence of strong interactions, EGCG is released in a controlled manner from the carrier-ion-EGCG drug delivery system. The results obtained in this work confirm the effectiveness of the preparation of new carriers. EGCG is released from the carriers depending on the pH; hence, it can be used both in osteoporosis and in the treatment of cancer. The divalent ion used affects the sorption and release of the drug. The obtained results indicate the great potential of the proposed carriers and their advantage over the carriers described in the literature.

Water Treatment Using High Performance Antifouling Ultrafiltration Polyether Sulfone Membranes Incorporated with Activated Carbon

Membrane fouling is a continued critical challenge for ultrafiltration membranes performance. In this work, polyether sulfone (PES) ultrafiltration (UF) membranes were fabricated via phase-inversion method by incorporating varying concentrations of APTMS modified activated carbon (mAC). The mAC was thoroughly characterized and the fabricated membranes were studied for their surface morphology, functional groups, contact angle, water retention, swelling (%) porosity, and water flux. The hydrophilicity of mAC membranes also resulted in lower contact angle and higher values of porosity, roughness, water retention as well as water flux. Also, the membranes incorporated with mAC exhibited antibacterial performance against model test strains of gram-negative Ecoil and gram-positive S. aureus. The antifouling studies based on bovine serum albumin protein (BSA) solution filtration showed that mAC membranes have better BSA flux. The higher flux and antifouling characteristics of the mAC membranes were attributed to the electrostatic repulsion of the BSA protein from the unique functional properties of AC and network structure of APTMS. The novel mAC ultrafiltration membranes developed and studied in present work can provide higher flux and less BSA rejection thus can find antifouling applications for the isolation and concentration of proteins and macromolecules.

Blood-Vessel-Inspired Hierarchical Trilayer Scaffolds: PCL/Gelatin-Driven Protein Adsorption and Cellular Interaction

Fabrication of scaffolds with hierarchical structures exhibiting the blood vessel topological and biochemical features of the native extracellular matrix that maintain long-term patency remains a major challenge. Within this context, scaffold assembly using biodegradable synthetic polymers (BSPs) via electrospinning had led to soft-tissue-resembling microstructures that allow cell infiltration. However, BSPs fail to exhibit the sufficient surface reactivity, limiting protein adsorption and/or cell adhesion and jeopardizing the overall graft performance. Here, we present a methodology for the fabrication of three-layered polycaprolactone (PCL)-based tubular structures with biochemical cues to improve protein adsorption and cell adhesion. For this purpose, PCL was backbone-oxidized (O-PCL) and cast over a photolithography-manufactured microgrooved mold to obtain a bioactive surface as demonstrated using a protein adsorption assay (BSA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and calorimetric analyses. Then, two layers of PCL:gelatin (75:25 and 95:5 w/w), obtained using a novel single-desolvation method, were electrospun over the casted O-PCL to mimic a vascular wall with a physicochemical gradient to guide cell adhesion. Furthermore, tensile properties were shown to withstand the physiological mechanical stresses and strains. In vitro characterization, using L929 mouse fibroblasts, demonstrated that the multilayered scaffold is a suitable platform for cell infiltration and proliferation from the innermost to the outermost layer as is needed for vascular wall regeneration. Our work holds promise as a strategy for the low-cost manufacture of next-generation polymer-based hierarchical scaffolds with high bioactivity and resemblance of ECM’s microstructure to accurately guide cell attachment and proliferation.

Application of Ion Exchange and Adsorption Techniques for Separation of Whey Proteins from Bovine Milk

Background:

The world production of whey was estimated to be more than 200 million tons per year. Although whey is an important source of proteins with high nutritional value and biotechnological importance, it is still considered as a by-product of the dairy industry with low economic value due to low industrial exploitation. There are several challenges in the separation of whey proteins: low concentration, the complexity of the material and similar properties (pI, molecular mass) of some proteins.

Methods:

A narrative review of all the relevant papers on the present methodologies based on ion-exchange and adsorption principles for isolation of whey proteins, known to the authors, was conducted.

Results:

Traditional ion-exchange techniques are widely used for the separation and purification of the bovine whey proteins. These methodologies, based on the anion or cation chromatographic procedures, as well as combination of aforementioned techniques are still preferential methods for the isolation of the whey proteins on the laboratory scale. However, more recent research on ion exchange membranes for this purpose has been introduced, with promising potential to be applied on the pilot industrial scale. Newly developed methodologies based either on the ion-exchange separation (for example: simulated moving bed chromatography, expanded bed adsorption, magnetic ion exchangers, etc.) or adsorption (for example: adsorption on hydroxyapatite or activated carbon, or molecular imprinting) are promising approaches for scaling up of the whey proteins’ purification processes.

Conclusion:

Many procedures based on ion exchange are successfully implemented for separation and purification of whey proteins, providing protein preparations of moderate-to-high yield and satisfactory purity. However, the authors anticipate further development of adsorption-based methodologies for separation of whey proteins by targeting the differences in proteins’ structures rather than targeting the differences in molecular masses and pI. The complex composite multilayered matrices, including also inorganic components, are promising materials for simultaneous exploiting of the differences in the masses, pI and structures of whey proteins for the separation.

Effect of Protein Adsorption on Air Plastron Behavior of a Superhydrophobic Surface

Protein fouling on critical biointerfaces causes significant public health and clinical ramifications. Multiple strategies, including superhydrophobic (SHP) surfaces and coatings, have been explored to mitigate protein adsorption on solid surfaces. SHP materials with underwater air plastron (AP) layers hold great promise by physically reducing the contact area between a substrate and protein molecules. However, sustaining AP stability or lifetime is crucial in determining the durability and long-term applications of SHP materials. This work investigated the effect of protein on the AP stability using model SHP substrates, which were prepared from a mixture of silica nanoparticles and epoxy. The AP stability was determined using a submersion test with real-time visualization. The results showed that AP stability was significantly weakened by protein solutions compared to water, which could be attributed to the surface tension of protein solutions and protein adsorption on SHP substrates. The results were further examined to reveal the correlation between protein fouling and accelerated AP dissipation on SHP materials by confocal fluorescent imaging, surface energy measurement, and surface robustness modeling of the Cassie-Baxter to Wenzel transition. The study reveals fundamental protein adsorption mechanisms on SHP materials, which could guide future SHP material design to better mitigate protein fouling on critical biointerfaces.

Preparation of Activated Carbons from Spent Coffee Grounds and Coffee Parchment and Assessment of Their Adsorbent Efficiency

The valorization of coffee wastes through modification to activated carbon has been considered as a low-cost adsorbent with prospective to compete with commercial carbons. So far, very few studies have referred to the valorization of coffee parchment into activated carbon. Moreover, low-cost and efficient activation methods need to be more investigated. The aim of this work was to prepare activated carbon from spent coffee grounds and parchment, and to assess their adsorption performance. The co-calcination processing with calcium carbonate was used to prepare the activated carbons, and their adsorption capacity for organic acids, phenolic compounds and proteins was evaluated. Both spent coffee grounds and parchment showed yields after the calcination and washing treatments of around 9.0%. The adsorption of lactic acid was found to be optimal at pH 2. The maximum adsorption capacity of lactic acid with standard commercial granular activated carbon was 73.78 mg/g, while the values of 32.33 and 14.73 mg/g were registered for the parchment and spent coffee grounds activated carbons, respectively. The Langmuir isotherm showed that lactic acid was adsorbed as a monolayer and distributed homogeneously on the surface. Around 50% of total phenols and protein content from coffee wastewater were adsorbed after treatment with the prepared activated carbons, while 44, 43, and up to 84% of hydrophobic compounds were removed using parchment, spent coffee grounds and commercial activated carbon, respectively; the adsorption efficiencies of hydrophilic compounds ranged between 13 and 48%. Finally, these results illustrate the potential valorization of coffee by-products parchment and spent coffee grounds into activated carbon and their use as low-cost adsorbent for the removal of organic compounds from aqueous solutions.

Facile synthesis and characterization of microporous-structured activated carbon from agro waste materials and its application for CO2 capture

Biomass-derived activated carbon was prepared from the agro waste materials, (wild sugarcane (WS) and saw dust (SD)) by chemical activation using phosphoric acid. The crystallinity, morphology, functional groups of the synthesized activated carbon were investigated. The effects of contact time (10-60 min), mass of adsorbent (0.05-0.2 g) and concentrations of CO2 (1 × 10-4 to 10 × 10-4 M) were analysed and the optimum adsorption conditions were found. Freundlich, Langmuir, Temkin, Dubinin-Radushkevich and Sips isotherm were used to analyse the adsorption data. The adsorption process was fitted with the Freundlich model. Adsorption capacity of agro waste-based sorbent was 5.225 × 10-3 mol/g. Thermodynamic parameters, such as ΔH0, ΔG0, ΔS0 , were calculated and it was found that the present system was a spontaneous process. From the kinetic studies, it was inferred that the Pseudo-second-order kinetics describes the kinetics of CO2 on AC-WSSD with an equilibrium point attained at 50 minutes with a high R2 value of 0.9602. The Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) surface area of 1220 m2/g and an iodine value of 1360 m2/g were better indications for adsorption process. The interaction between CO2 and functional groups on the surface of the activated carbon was confirmed by FTIR. Desorption studies were carried out for three cycles with an efficiency of 93.2%.

Effect of the Albumin Corona on the Toxicity of Combined Graphene Oxide and Cadmium to Daphnia magna and Integration of the Datasets into the NanoCommons Knowledge Base

In this work, we evaluated the effect of protein corona formation on graphene oxide (GO) mixture toxicity testing (i.e., co-exposure) using the Daphnia magna model and assessing acute toxicity determined as immobilisation. Cadmium (Cd2+) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) were selected as co-pollutant and protein model system, respectively. Albumin corona formation on GO dramatically increased its colloidal stability (ca. 60%) and Cd2+ adsorption capacity (ca. 4.5 times) in reconstituted water (Daphnia medium). The acute toxicity values (48 h-EC50) observed were 0.18 mg L-1 for Cd2+-only and 0.29 and 0.61 mg L-1 following co-exposure of Cd2+ with GO and BSA@GO materials, respectively, at a fixed non-toxic concentration of 1.0 mg L-1. After coronation of GO with BSA, a reduction in cadmium toxicity of 110 % and 238% was achieved when compared to bare GO and Cd2+-only, respectively. Integration of datasets associated with graphene-based materials, heavy metals and mixture toxicity is essential to enable re-use of the data and facilitate nanoinformatics approaches for design of safer nanomaterials for water quality monitoring and remediation technologies. Hence, all data from this work were annotated and integrated into the NanoCommons Knowledge Base, connecting the experimental data to nanoinformatics platforms under the FAIR data principles and making them interoperable with similar datasets.

Expandable Graphite as a Fire Retardant for Cellulosic Materials—A Review

A diversity of chemicals is used to produce fire retardants (FRs); some of the main group of chemicals are hazardous to the environment as well as to human life; however, expandable graphite (EG) can be a gateway to a more environmentally friendly FRs or intumescent fire retardants (IFRs). Researchers define intumescent as the swelling of a particular substance placed between a heat source and an underlying substrate when they are heated. EG is a material with extraordinary thermophysical and mechanical properties. The referred EG properties are unparalleled. EG is a low-density carbon material having a series of unique properties: developed specific surface, binder-free pressing capacity, stability to aggressive media, and low thermal conductivity. Therefore, EG is a promising material both for research work and for industrial applications. The primary goal of this literature review was to report current knowledge on the use of EG as a fire retardant for cellulose and cellulose-modified materials. EG is produced, among other methods, by thermal shock of graphite oxide under forming gas. When exposed to heat, EG will expand. The expansion mechanism was presented in this review. Equally important to this review is the knowledge related to cellulose thermal degradation and cellulose impact on the development of science and technology.

Alkaline Earth Metal-Organic Frameworks with Tailorable Ion Release: A Path for Supporting Biomineralization

An innovative application of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is in biomedical materials. To treat bone demineralization, which is a hallmark of osteoporosis, biocompatible MOFs (bioMOFs) have been proposed in which various components, such as alkaline-earth cations and bisphosphonate molecules, can be delivered to maintain normal bone density. Multicomponent bioMOFs that release several components simultaneously at a controlled rate thus offer an attractive solution. We report two new bioMOFs, comprising strontium and calcium ions linked by p-xylylenebisphosphonate molecules that release these three components and display no cytotoxic effects on human osteosarcoma cells. Varying the Sr²⁺/Ca²⁺ ratio in these bioMOFs causes the rate of ions dissolving into simulated body fluid to be unique; along with the ability to adsorb proteins, this property is crucial for future efforts in drug-release control and promotion of mineral formation. The one-pot synthesis of these bioMOFs demonstrates the utility of MOF design strategies.

Adsorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA) by bare magnetite nanoparticles with surface oxidative impurities that prevent aggregation

Bare, uncoated magnetite nanoparticles, synthesized using an electrochemical surfactant-free synthesis, have highly oxidized surfaces that prevent aggregation. These particles have demonstrated highly intriguing biological activity showing extremely potent antibiotic activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria with little toxicity to rats. This difference in activity could be ascribed to the nature of the protein corona. The kinetics and thermodynamics of the binding of bovine serum albumin (BSA), used as a model serum protein, to these magnetite nanoparticles were analyzed. There is no significant change in particle diameter by dynamic light scattering following adsorption, indicating corona formation does not induce aggregation. The maximum adsorption capacity of the particles was determined to be 300 mg of BSA per gram of magnetite. The particles are able to adsorb 90% of the BSA at protein concentrations as high as 500 mg/L. The adsorption is best described using a pseudo second order model and a Langmuir Type III isotherm model. Thermodynamic analysis showed that the process is entropically driven and is spontaneous at all tested temperatures and conditions. However, it appears to be a weak to moderate physical adsorption. This moderate binding affinity could indicate the differential biological activity of these particles towards bacteria and mammalian cells and further support the contention that these are potentially useful new tools for targeting antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Selective Electrochemical Capture and Release of Heparin Based on Amine-Functionalized Carbon/Titanium Dioxide Nanotube Arrays

Heparin (HEP) is a sulfated glycosaminoglycan that is a clinical anticoagulant agent. Commercially derived from porcine intestinal mucosa, HEP is challenging to separate from this complex biological mixture for additional purification. This study aimed to raise the purity of isolated HEP using electrochemical potential to increase its selective capture and release. We demonstrate an electrochemical platform featuring an anode composed of amine-functionalized carbon/titanium dioxide nanotube arrays on titanium foil (Ti/C-TNTAs-NH₂) and a cathode made of expanded graphite. Our results show that Ti and Ti/C-TNTAs control plates do not adsorb HEP, even while applying an external potential to the cell. However, when the Ti/C-TNTAs electrode is modified by 3 aminopropyltriethoxysilane, the terminal NH₂ groups provide a high density of positive charges that serve as binding sites, enabling the adsorption of HEP. This attraction is further strengthened by applying an external potential to the anode. Subsequent release of the HEP molecules and regeneration of the Ti/C-TNTAs-NH₂ electrode are easily accomplished by applying an anodic potential to the plate, as well as by increasing the concentration of NaCl in solution. This electrochemical system demonstrates the good selectivity of HEP, even within a mixture of other probable interfering species (e.g., bovine serum albumin and chondroitin sulfate). Additionally, it maintains 90.11% of its initial electrosorption efficiency after ten repeated HEP adsorption/desorption cycles, indicating this system's promising stability and reusability for HEP purification.

Crucial Factors for the Application of Functional Nanoporous Carbon-Based Materials in Energy and Environmental Applications

This special issue of C—Journal of Carbon Research is dedicated to “Functional Nanoporous Carbon-Based Materials”. It contains contributions reporting on the synthesis of nanoporous carbons for the adsorption of proteins, their applications in electrochemical energy storage/conversion, and on the characterization/modification of their surface chemistry. Nanoporous carbon-based materials are widely researched, but at the same time, the field is still full of unutilized potential. The atomic construction of the carbon framework, pore sizes, pore geometries, presence of heteroatoms, particle size and shape, and many other “internal screws” are available; in the end, the high potential of carbon-based materials will only be fully explored if the interplay of these crucial factors is precisely controlled. This article is a summary of what we consider important for future targeted improvement of porous carbon nanomaterials for energy and environmental applications.
