Density Functional Theory-Based Approaches to Improving Hydrogen Storage in Graphene-Based Materials

Various technologies have been developed for the safe and efficient storage of hydrogen. Hydrogen storage in its solid form is an attractive option to overcome challenges such as storage and cost. Specifically, hydrogen storage in carbon-based structures is a good solution. To date, numerous theoretical studies have explored hydrogen storage in different carbon structures. Consequently, in this review, density functional theory (DFT) studies on hydrogen storage in graphene-based structures are examined in detail. Different modifications of graphene structures to improve their hydrogen storage properties are comprehensively reviewed. To date, various modified graphene structures, such as decorated graphene, doped graphene, graphene with vacancies, graphene with vacancies-doping, as well as decorated-doped graphene, have been explored to modify the reactivity of pristine graphene. Most of these modified graphene structures are good candidates for hydrogen storage. The DFT-based theoretical studies analyzed in this review should motivate experimental groups to experimentally validate the theoretical predictions as many modified graphene systems are shown to be good candidates for hydrogen storage.

Revealing Hydrogen States in Carbon Structures by Analyzing the Thermal Desorption Spectra

An effective methodology for the detailed analysis of thermal desorption spectra (TDS) of hydrogen in carbon structures at micro- and nanoscale was further developed and applied for a number of TDS data of one heating rate, in particular, for graphite materials irradiated with atomic hydrogen. The technique is based on a preliminary description of hydrogen desorption spectra by symmetric Gaussians with their special processing in the approximation of the first- and the second-order reactions. As a result, the activation energies and the pre-exponential factors of the rate constants of the hydrogen desorption processes are determined, analyzed and interpreted. Some final verification of the results was completed using methods of numerical simulation of thermal desorption peaks (non-Gaussians) corresponding to the first- and the second-order reactions. The main research finding of this work is a further refinement and/or disclosure of poorly studied characteristics and physics of various states of hydrogen in microscale graphite structures after irradiation with atomic hydrogen, and comparison with the related results for nanoscale carbon structures. This is important for understanding the behavior and relationship of hydrogen in a number of cases of high energy carbon-based materials and nanomaterials.

Methane Adsorption on Heteroatom-Modified Maquettes of Porous Carbon Surfaces

Experimental and theoretical studies disagree on the energetics of methane adsorption on carbon materials. However, this information is critical for the rational design and optimization of the structure and composition of adsorbents for natural gas storage. The delicate nature of dispersion interactions, polarization of both the adsorbent and the adsorbate, interplay between H-bonding and tetrel bonding, and induced dipole/Coulomb interactions inherent to methane physisorption require computational treatment at the highest possible level of theory. In this study, we employed the smallest reasonable computational model, a maquette of porous carbon surfaces with a central site for substitution and methane binding. The most accurate predictions of methane adsorption energetics were achieved by electron-correlated molecular orbital theory CCSD(T) and hybrid density functional theory MN15 calculations employing a saturated, all-electron basis set. The characteristic geometry of methane adsorption on a carbon surface ("lander approach") arises due to bonding interactions of the adsorbent π-system with the proximal H-C bonds of methane, in addition to tetrel bonding between the antibonding orbital of the distal C-H bond and the central atom of the maquette (C, B, or N). The polarization of the electron density, structural deformations, and the comprehensive energetic analysis clearly indicate a ∼3 kJ mol^-1 preference for methane binding on the N-substituted maquette. The B-substituted maquette showed a comparable or lower binding energy than the unsubstituted, pure C model, depending on the level of theory employed. The calculated thermodynamic results indicate a strategy for incorporating electron-enriched substitutions (e.g., N) into carbon materials as a way to increase methane storage capacity over electron-deficient (e.g., B) modifications. The thermochemical analysis was revised for establishing a conceptual agreement between the experimental isosteric heat of adsorption and the binding enthalpies from statistical thermodynamics principles.

Binding Free Energy Calculations of Bilayer Graphenes Using Molecular Dynamics

Bilayer graphenes are dimeric assemblies of single graphene layers bound together by π-complexation interactions. Controlling these assemblies can be complicated, as the layered compounds disperse in solvents or aggregate into higher columnar configurations and clusters. One way to assess the interactions that contribute to the stability of the layered compounds is to use molecular simulation. We perform pulling molecular dynamics on bilayer graphenes with different sizes and obtain the normal and shear force profiles of dissociation. We generate pathways of dissociation along the two directions and calculate the binding free energies of the structures with umbrella sampling simulations. We show that the dissociation process is direction-dependent. Along the shear direction, we compute the same free energy for the different samples, which validates the consistency of our simulations. We notice that the dissociation is less adiabatic on the normal than the shear direction, having an entropic contribution to the Gibbs energy. This contribution is more enhanced for the larger bilayer graphenes.
