Catalytic Performance of Bulk and Al2O3-Supported Molybdenum Oxide for the Production of Biodiesel from Oil with High Free Fatty Acids Content

Innovative flow-through reaction system for the sustainable production of phenolic monomers from lignocellulose catalyzed by supported Mo2C

Molybdenum carbide supported on activated carbon (β-Mo2C/AC) has been tested as catalyst in the reductive catalytic fractionation (RCF) of lignocellulosic biomass both in batch and in Flow-Through (FT) reaction systems. High phenolic monomer yields (34 wt.%) and selectivity to monomers with reduced side alkyl chains (up to 80 wt.%) could be achieved in batch in the presence of hydrogen. FT-RCF were made with no hydrogen feed, thus via transfer hydrogenation from ethanol. Similar selectivity could be attained in FT-RCF using high catalyst/biomass ratios (0.6) and high molybdenum loading (35 wt.%) in the catalyst, although selectivity decreased with lower catalyst/biomass ratios or molybdenum contents. Regardless of these parameters, high delignification of the lignocellulosic biomass and similar monomer yields were observed in the FT mode (13-15 wt.%) while preserving the holocellulose fractions in the delignified pulp. FT-RCF system outperforms the batch reaction mode in the absence of hydrogen, both in terms of activity and selectivity to reduced monomers that is attributed to the two-step non-equilibrium processes and the removal of diffusional limitations that occur in the FT mode. Even though some molybdenum leaching was detected, the catalytic performance could be maintained with negligible loss of activity or selectivity for 15 consecutive runs.

Efficient biodiesel production from oleic and palmitic acid using a novel molybdenum metal-organic framework as efficient and reusable catalyst

In this study, metal-organic framework based on molybdenum and piperidine-4-carboxylic acid, was synthesized through a simple solvothermal method and employed as an effective catalyst for biodiesel production from oleic acid and palmitic acid via esterification reaction. The prepared catalyst was characterized by XRD, FTIR, TGA, DSC, BET, SEM, TEM, ICP-OES, X-ray mapping and EDX analysis. The resulting Mo-MOF catalyst exhibit a rod-like morphology, specific surface area of 56 m2/g, and thermal stability up to 300 °C. The solid catalyst exhibited high activities for esterification of oleic acid and palmitic acid. Moreover, the catalyst could be simply recovered and efficiently reutilized for several times without significant loss in its activity, also obtained results revealed that metal-organic framework could be used for the appropriate and rapid biodiesel production.

Effect of Physicochemical Properties of Co and Mo Modified Natural Sourced Hierarchical ZSM-5 Zeolite Catalysts on Vanillin and Phenol Production from Diphenyl Ether

The conversion of lignocellulose biomass to value-added chemicals is challenging. In this paper, the conversion process of diphenyl ether (DPE) as a model lignin compound to phenol and vanillin compounds involved a bifunctional catalyst in reaching the simultaneous one-pot reaction in mild conditions with a high yield product. The catalysts used in this conversion are hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolites and their cobalt oxide and molybdenum oxide impregnated derivate. The ZSM-5 zeolites were synthesized using alternative precursors from natural resources, i.e., Indonesian natural zeolite and kaolin. The physicochemical properties of the catalysts were determined with various characterization methods, such as: X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infra Red (FT-IR), Scanning Electron Microscope - Energy Dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), Surface Area Analyzer (SAA), and NH3-Temperature Programmed Desorption (NH3-TPD). The catalytic activity on conversion of DPE substrates showed that the MoOx/HZSM-5 produced the highest %yield for phenol and vanillin products; 31.96% at 250 °C and 7.63% at 200 °C, respectively. The correlation study between the physicochemical properties and the catalytic activity shows that the dominance of weak acid (>40%) and mesoporosity contribution (pore size of ~ 9 nm) play roles in giving the best catalytic activity at low temperatures. Hydrodesulfurization of 4,6-Dimethyldibenzothiophene and the Diesel Oil Fraction on NiMo Catalysts Supported over Proton-Exchanged AlMCM-41 and TiMCM-41 Extrudates

NiMo catalysts supported on mesoporous MCM-41 type materials shaped with binder were tested for activity in the hydrodesulfurization of 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT) and the diesel fuel fraction (0.92 wt% of sulfur). The aim of the investigation was to evaluate the effect of ion exchange with protons of Al- or Ti-substituted MCM-41 mesoporous supports. The subjected catalytic systems were NiMo/HAlMCM-41 and NiMo/HTiMCM-41, and for comparison purposes NiMo/AlMCM-41 and NiMo/TiMCM-41. The samples were characterized by N2 sorption (at 77 K), XRD, TEM, XPS, SEM and Py–IR. It was found that the functionalization of AlMCM-41 and TiMCM-41 with protons increased the conversion of 4,6-DMDBT and the pseudo-first-order rate constant. Correspondingly, 4,6-DMDBT HDS reactions over the NiMo/HTiMCM-41 catalyst proceeded to a similar extent via hydrogenation and direct desulfurization, whereas over the NiMo/HAlMCM-41 they proceeded mainly via direct desulfurization. Furthermore, the ion-exchanged catalysts displayed two-fold higher efficiency in direct desulfurization than their non-modified counterparts. The NiMo/HTiMCM-41 catalyst exhibited the highest catalytic efficiency in the HDS of 4,6-DMDBT and the diesel oil fraction. The high activity of the NiMo/HTiMCM-41 catalyst is mainly attributed to its appropriate acidity, as well as the metal–support interaction providing both the high dispersion of the active phase and the desirable multilayered stacking morphology of the active phase slabs.

Copper molybdate synthesized by sonochemistry route at room temperature as an efficient solid catalyst for esterification of oleic acid

Copper molybdate nanoplates were synthesized by a sonochemical process at room temperature, which we report as a simple and cost-effective route. Structural analysis of the material by the Rietveld method of X-ray diffraction (XRD) data revealed lindgrenite Cu3(MoO4)2(OH)2 in a single-phase structure. All the vibrational modes characteristic of the space group were identified by Raman vibrational and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopies. The profile obtained for N2 adsorption/desorption was type III hysteresis, characteristic of mesoporous materials, with a surface area of 70.77(1) m2 g-1. The micrographs of the material obtained by scanning electron microscopy showed nanoplates with nanometric sizes and an anisotropic growth aspect. The catalytic activity of lindgrenite was evaluated by esterifying oleic acid with methanol, showing high conversion rate to methyl oleate and good catalyst stability after seven recycling cycles. Above all, the best catalytic performance was reached when we optimized parameters such as oleic acid:methanol molar ratio of 1:5, 5% of catalyst dosage, and reaction time of 5 h, resulting in 98.38% of conversion at 413 K. Therefore, sonochemically synthesized lindgrenite proved to be a high potential material for biofuel production by oleic acid esterification.
