Theoretical and Experimental Studies on the Visible Light Activity of TiO2 Modified with Halide-Based Ionic Liquids

Preparation of TiO2/Ag[BMIM]Cl Composites and Their Visible Light Photocatalytic Properties for the Degradation of Rhodamine B

In order to degrade toxic pollutants such as dyes during the process of sewage treatment, considerable attention has been paid to photocatalytic technologies. In this paper, TiO2/Ag[BMIM]Cl (1-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium chloride ([BMIM]Cl)) nanocomposites were prepared with TiO2 as the carrier, silver ions as dopants and ionic liquids (IL) as modifiers. The morphologies, microstructures, crystalline structure and optical properties of the TiO2/Ag[BMIM]Cl nanospheres are investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), total organic carbon (TOC), and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectrum (UV-vis DRS) techniques. The TiO2/Ag[BMIM]Cl nanocomposites can selectively degrade rhodamine B (Rh B) under visible light because of the unstable quaternary ammonium salt. The as-obtained nanocomposites exhibit better photocatalytic activity performance than pure TiO2, TiO2/IL, and TiO2/Ag+. The experimental results show that the Rh B degradation rate can reach 98.87% under optimized producing conditions by using the TiO2/Ag[BMIM]Cl composites as the catalyzer. It shows that simultaneous doping with silver ions and ionic liquids can significantly improve the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 in Rh B degradation, indicating the formation of photosensitive AgCl in the process of TiO2/Ag[BMIM]Cl preparation. Ag+ and IL addition exchange the band gap of TiO2 and lengthen the visible wavelength range of the composite. The material has the advantages of low cost, facile preparation and reusability with the excellent degradation effect of Rh B.

Computational Study of Cresyl Violet Covalently Attached to the Silane Coupling Agents: Application to TiO2-Based Photocatalysts and Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

The covalent attachment of photosensitizing dyes to TiO₂ using silane coupling agents (SCAs) is a promising strategy for enhancing the photocatalytic activity of TiO₂-based photocatalysts and the photovoltaic conversion of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). This approach can control the geometry and orientation of the photosensitizing dye on the TiO₂ surface. In this study, a density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) investigation was carried out on cresyl violet (CV) covalently attached to SCAs with a terminal oxirane group (OTES–Cn) to reveal the influence of OTES–Cn on the geometry of the photosensitizing dyes. The potential of CV covalently attached to OTES–Cn (CV–OTES–Cn) to act as a photosensitizing dye was also analyzed. The hydroxyl group formed by the epoxy-opening reaction between CV and OTES–Cn strongly influenced the geometry of CV–OTES–Cn, which was attributed to a CH–O interaction. Additionally, TD-DFT, frontier molecular orbital and molecular electrostatic potential calculations revealed that CV–OTES–Cn has excellent optical properties and electron injection ability. In particular, the characteristics of the unbent conformation of CV–OTES–Cn are expected to contribute significantly to the photocurrent in TiO₂-based photocatalysts and DSSCs. These findings enhance the understanding of the covalent attachment strategy using SCAs and contribute to improving TiO₂-based photocatalysts and DSSCs.

Fabrication of ILs-Assisted AgTaO3 Nanoparticles for the Water Splitting Reaction: The Effect of ILs on Morphology and Photoactivity

The design of an active, stable and efficient photocatalyst that is able to be used for hydrogen production is of great interest nowadays. Therefore, four methods of AgTaO3 perovskite synthesis, such as hydrothermal, solvothermal, sol-gel and solid state reactions, were proposed in this study to identify the one with the highest hydrogen generation efficiency by the water splitting reaction. The comprehensive results clearly show that the solid state reaction (SSR) led to the obtainment of a sample with an almost seven times higher photocatalytic activity than the other methods. Furthermore, four ionic liquids, all possessing nitrogen in the form of organic cations (two imidazoliums with different anions, ammonium and tetrazolium), were used for the first time to prepare composites consisting of AgTaO3 modified with IL and Pt, simultaneously. The effect of the ionic liquids (ILs) and Pt nanoparticles' presence on the structure, morphology, optical properties, elemental composition and the effectiveness of the hydrogen generation was investigated and discussed. The morphology investigation revealed that the AgTaO3 photocatalysts with the application of [OMIM]-cation based ILs created smaller granules (<500 nm), whereas [TBA] [Cl] and [TPTZ] [Cl] ILs caused the formation of larger particles (up to 2 μm). We found that various ILs used for the synthesis did not improve the photocatalytic activity of the obtained samples in comparison with pristine AgTaO3. It was detected that the compound with the highest ability for hydrogen generation under UV-Vis irradiation was the AgTaO3_0.2% Pt (248.5 μmol∙g-1), having an almost 13 times higher efficiency in comparison with the non-modified pristine sample. It is evidenced that the enhanced photocatalytic activity of modified composites originated mainly from the presence of the platinum particles. The mechanism of photocatalytic H2 production under UV-Vis light irradiation in the presence of an AgTaO3_IL_Pt composite in the water splitting reaction was also proposed.
