Coupling Z-Scheme g-C3N4/rGO/MoS2 Ternary Heterojunction as an Efficient Visible Light Photocatalyst for Hydrogen Evolution and RhB Degradation

Coupling heterostructures to synergistically improve the light adsorption and promote the charge carrier separation has been regarded as an operative approach to advance the photocatalytic performances. However, it is still challenging to construct heterostructures with appropriate optical properties and interfacial energy structures at the same time. In this work, a Z-scheme g-C3N4/rGO/MoS2 ternary composite photocatalyst is successfully synthesized via an effective hydrothermal method. The as-synthesized g-C3N4/rGO/MoS2 composite photocatalyst exhibited significant improvement for visible light absorption and boosted the separation efficiency of photoinduced electron-hole pairs. The g-C3N4/rGO/MoS2 system exhibited optimum visible-light-induced photocatalytic activity in hydrogen (H2) from water splitting and degrading pollutant rhodamin B (RhB), which is 22 times and 5 times higher than that of pure g-C3N4, respectively. The excellent photocatalytic activities are attributed to the synergetic effects of coupling rGO, g-C3N4, and MoS2 ternary structures to the composite photocatalyst. These combinations of intimate two-dimensional nanoconjugations can effectively inhibit charge recombination and accelerate charge transfer kinetics, forming a Z-scheme-assisted photocatalytic mechanism, thereby exhibiting superior photocatalytic activity.

Optimization Methods of Tungsten Oxide-Based Nanostructures as Electrocatalysts for Water Splitting

Electrocatalytic water splitting, as a sustainable, pollution-free and convenient method of hydrogen production, has attracted the attention of researchers. However, due to the high reaction barrier and slow four-electron transfer process, it is necessary to develop and design efficient electrocatalysts to promote electron transfer and improve reaction kinetics. Tungsten oxide-based nanomaterials have received extensive attention due to their great potential in energy-related and environmental catalysis. To maximize the catalytic efficiency of catalysts in practical applications, it is essential to further understand the structure-property relationship of tungsten oxide-based nanomaterials by controlling the surface/interface structure. In this review, recent methods to enhance the catalytic activities of tungsten oxide-based nanomaterials are reviewed, which are classified into four strategies: morphology regulation, phase control, defect engineering, and heterostructure construction. The structure-property relationship of tungsten oxide-based nanomaterials affected by various strategies is discussed with examples. Finally, the development prospects and challenges in tungsten oxide-based nanomaterials are discussed in the conclusion. We believe that this review provides guidance for researchers to develop more promising electrocatalysts for water splitting.

Solid neutral red/Nafion conductive layer on carbon felt electrode enhances acetate production from CO2 and energy efficiency in microbial electrosynthesis system

Renewable electricity-based microbial electrosynthesis can upgrade CO₂ into value-added chemicals and simultaneously increase the number of biocatalysts by cell growth, helping to achieve sustainable carbon-negative processes. In most studies, the main strategy for improving the MES performance was to enhance H₂-based electron uptake by decreasing the overpotential and electrical conductivity of the electrode. Less is known about the electrode-based direct electron uptake for CO₂ conversion in MES. In this study, a solid neutral red/Nafion conductive layer was developed on the carbon electrode surface using a feasible dip and dry method. The modified electrode showed higher HER overpotential and lower capacitance but enhanced redox capability and hydrophobicity, which increased direct electron transport to the bacteria rather than hydrogen-based indirect electron delivery. The Neutral red/Nafion-implemented MES showed faster start-up, higher acetate production, and energy efficiency than the non-modified electrode.

Interface Engineering-Induced 1T-MoS2/NiS Heterostructure for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Metal phase molybdenum disulfide (1T-MoS2) is considered a promising electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this work, an interface engineering-induced strategy is reported to prepare a 1T-MoS2/NiS heterostructure. The 1T-MoS2/NiS heterostructure exhibits an enhanced HER activity compared with that of the 1T-MoS2 in 1.0 M KOH. It achieves an overpotential of 0.12 V at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 with a Tafel slope of 69 mV dec−1. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the interface engineering-induced 1T-MoS2/NiS heterostructure exhibits regulated electronic states of the S sites in 1T-MoS2, thus promoting the HER activity. This work demonstrates that tuning the electronic structure through interface engineering to enhance the intrinsic activity of electrocatalysts is a feasible strategy.
