Hydrodynamic performance assessment of photocatalytic reactor with baffles and roughness in the flow path: A modelling approach with experimental validation

Purification of wastewater is essential for human being as well as for the flora and fauna, and sustainable environment. Photocatalytic reactor with TiO2 coated layer can be used to degrade the pollutants but without proper pollutant mass transfer in the reactive surface, photocatalytic reactor decreases its effectiveness. The baffles and rough surface in the flow path can improve the fluid mixing to enhance pollutant mass transfer to improve the reactor's performance. In this study, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model has been developed to investigate the effect of four top baffles and three rough surfaces (semi-circular, triangle, and rectangle) on pressure drops, mass transfer and the hydrodynamic performance of the reactor. The experimental investigation was carried out using Formic Acid (FA) as pollutant in feed water for model validation. The simulated result varies only within 5% with the experimental data of FA concentration versus feed flow rate and fluid velocity. The model was run at fluid velocity of 0.15 m/s and 0.5 m/s (Reynolds number of 2150 (laminar flow) and 7500 (turbulent flow), respectively. The simulation result shows that the addition of baffles and roughness on the reactive surfaces increases the turbulent kinetic energy (minimum increase 8%) and consequently increases the mass transfer (maximum increase 37%) of the pollutant. The highest wall shear was observed to be 40 Pa when both square and triangular elements were used as roughness elements at turbulent flow condition. The results also shows that the highest pressure-drop of 8 kPa was found when the square roughness element was used at turbulent flow condition. Overall, the photocatalytic reactor performance is significantly enhanced by the application of combined baffles and roughness elements in the reactive surface.

Photoactive catalysts for treatment of air pollutants: a bibliometric analysis

In recent years, photocatalysts are becoming attractive to researchers in exploring their application for treatment of air pollutants. Exposure to ultra-violet visible (UV-VIS) light on photocatalysts often makes them active in decomposing various toxic materials into less or environment-friendly products. Thus, identification, as well as simple synthesis and processing of photocatalysts, could ultimately lead to technologies for the cost-effective mitigation of environmental hazards. A bibliometric analysis has been carried out here to understand and assess the development in photocatalyst research. The data retrieved from the Scopus database on the topic for 2000-2020 were analyzed to investigate the research activities of the past to foresight the future. Various facets of bibliometry were investigated to produce this holistic article. The contribution of various countries, institutions, and authors were investigated. Numerous facets of photocatalyst such as types of photocatalysts, their modification through metal and non-metal doping, their pollutants treatment potency, types of reactors for photocatalysis, factors influencing treatment performance, and models used for designing reactors were examined. In brevity, substantial growth was observed in the last two decades. Contribution of China, the USA, Japan, and India were notable. Chinese universities contributed majorly to the research. Applied Catalysis B: Environmental Journal was the topic's main journal and Titanium dioxide was the hotspot in photocatalytic research. The research development, problem disclosure, adopted strategies, and materials explored on the photocatalysis for air pollution treatment over recent years across the world could be insightful to the researchers and eventually will be beneficial to formulate new research strategies.

Performance evaluation of Zr(CUR)/NiCo2S4/CuCo2S4 and Zr(CUR)/CuCo2S4/Ag2S composites for photocatalytic degradation of the methyl parathion pesticide using a spiral-shaped photocatalytic reactor

Zr(CUR)/NiCo₂S₄/CuCo₂S₄ and Zr(CUR)/CuCo₂S₄/Ag₂S ternary composites were synthesized as efficient photocatalysts, and well characterized through XRD, FTIR, DRS, FE-SEM, EDS, and EDS mapping techniques. The potential of a spiral-shaped photocatalytic reactor was evaluated for degradation of the methyl parathion (MP) pesticide using synthesized photocatalysts under visible light irradiation. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was applied for analysis of the hydrodynamics behaviour and mass transport occurring inside the reactor. The experiments were performed based on a developed CCD-RSM model, while the desirability function (DF) was used for optimization of the process. Findings showed that the highest MP degradation percentage was 98.70% at optimal operating values including 20 mg L^-1, 0.60 g L^-1, 8 and 40 min for MP concentration, catalyst dosage, pH, and reaction time, respectively. This study clearly demonstrated that high degradation efficiency can be achieved using a spiral-shaped photocatalytic reactor rather than a traditional annular reactor at same conditions. The increase in reaction rate is related to the higher average turbulence kinetic energy in the spiral-shaped reactor over the traditional reactor, which results in the increased diffusivity and improves the mass and momentum transfer.

The Fate of Molecular Species in Water Layers in the Light of Power-Law Time-Dependent Diffusion Coefficient

In the present paper, we propose two methods for tracking molecular species in water layers via two approaches of the diffusion equation with a power-law time-dependent diffusion coefficient. The first approach shows the species densities and the growth of different species via numerical simulation. At the same time, the second approach is built on the fractional diffusion equation with a time-dependent diffusion coefficient in the sense of regularised Caputo fractional derivative. As an illustration, we present here the species densities profiles and track the normal and anomalous growth of five molecular species OH, H2O2, HO2, NO3-, and NO2- via the calculation of the mean square displacement using the two methods.

Engineering 2D Materials for Photocatalytic Water-Splitting from a Theoretical Perspective

Splitting of water with the help of photocatalysts has gained a strong interest in the scientific community for producing clean energy, thus requiring novel semiconductor materials to achieve high-yield hydrogen production. The emergence of 2D nanoscale materials with remarkable electronic and optical properties has received much attention in this field. Owing to the recent developments in high-end computation and advanced electronic structure theories, first principles studies offer powerful tools to screen photocatalytic systems reliably and efficiently. This review is organized to highlight the essential properties of 2D photocatalysts and the recent advances in the theoretical engineering of 2D materials for the improvement in photocatalytic overall water-splitting. The advancement in the strategies including (i) single-atom catalysts, (ii) defect engineering, (iii) strain engineering, (iv) Janus structures, (v) type-II heterostructures (vi) Z-scheme heterostructures (vii) multilayer configurations (viii) edge-modification in nanoribbons and (ix) the effect of pH in overall water-splitting are summarized to improve the existing problems for a photocatalytic catalytic reaction such as overcoming large overpotential to trigger the water-splitting reactions without using cocatalysts. This review could serve as a bridge between theoretical and experimental research on next-generation 2D photocatalysts.

Photocatalytic Applications in Wastewater and Air Treatment: A Patent Review (2010–2020)

In this work, we reviewed the most significant patents of the last decade (2010–2020) in the fields of water and air photocatalytic treatment. Patents were discussed by identifying the recurrent addressed issues and presenting the proposed solutions. Adoption of TiO2 and/or modified-TiO2-based material is still the most common choice of inventors, whereas many patents focus on the design of the plants/devices to improve efficiency of photocatalytic treatment by improving light utilization and contact between the phases. The review also highlights issues deriving from specific applications and outlines future trends in the field, such as the need for standardized testing and digitalization of monitoring and control.

Energy Transport of Photocatalytic Carbon Dioxide Reduction in Optical Fiber Honeycomb Reactor Coupled with Trough Concentrated Solar Power

Thanks to the high photon efficiency and reaction density, the optical fiber monolith reactor (OFMR) for InTaO4-based CO2 photoreduction is regarded as a promising photoreactor. In this work, the OFMR coupling with parabolic trough concentrator (PTC) is proposed to enlarge the daylighting area by several times without increasing the cost of photocatalysts. Based on the Monte Carlo ray-tracing (MCRT) approach and the finite volume method (FVM), a computational model of the reaction module considering the light, heat, and mass transfer is developed to optimize the fiber honeycomb reactor coupled with the PTC. As a result, the volume-averaged concentration of production reaches 1.85 × 10−4 mol·m−3, which is much higher than the traditional OFMR with the production concentration of 9.61 × 10−6 mol·m−3 under the same condition. The optimized structure of the monolith for better photocatalytic performance is obtained. It shows that the diameters of gas channels ranging from 1.5 to 2 mm are beneficial to the reaction efficiency. Finally, the results suggested that the even number of the gas channel should be avoided due to the pseudo-steady zone in the middle of the monolith. The reaction element with the high serial number along the flow direction has the reduced reaction density and endangers the organic optical fibers especially when the serial number exceeds 5.
