Kraft Lignin Ethanolysis over Zeolites with Different Acidity and Pore Structures for Aromatics Production

2-step lignin-first catalytic fractionation with bifunctional Pd/ß-zeolite catalyst in a flow-through reactor

This work demonstrates an additive and hydrogen-free 2-step lignin-first fractionation in flow-through. First, solvolytic delignification renders lignin liquors with its native chemical structure largely intact; and second, ß-zeolite catalytic depolymerization of these liquors leads to similar monomer yields as the corresponding 1-step fractionation process. Higher delignification temperatures lead to slightly lower ß-O-4 content in the solvated lignin, but does not affect significantly the monomer yield, so a higher temperature was overall preferred as it promotes faster delignification. Deposition of Pd on ß-zeolite resulted in a bifunctional hydrogenation/dehydration catalyst, tested during the catalytic depolymerization of solvated lignin with and without hydrogen addition. Pd/ß-zeolite displays synergistic effects (compared to the Pd/γ-Al2 O3 and ß-zeolite tested individually and as a mixed bed), resulting in higher monomer yield. This is likely caused by increased acidity and the proximity between the metallic and acid active sites. Furthermore, different ß-zeolite with varying SAR and textural properties were studied to shed light onto the effect of acidity and porosity in the stabilization of lignin monomers. While some of the catalysts showed stable performance, characterization of the spent catalyst reveals Al leaching (causing acidity loss and changes in textural properties), and some degree of coking and Pd sintering.

Catalytic depolymerization of Kraft lignin to high yield alkylated-phenols over CoMo/SBA-15 catalyst in supercritical ethanol

Lignin is generally considered to be a renewable and sustainable resource of aromatic chemicals. However, the depolymerization of Kraft lignin (KL) for the production of selective phenolic monomers presents a significant challenge due to its highly recalcitrant nature. Therefore, in this work, we investigated the effect of metal sites and acid active sites on Mo/SBA-15, Co/SBA-15 and CoMo/SBA-15 catalysts in supercritical ethanol for the depolymerization of KL to produce phenolic monomers. Ethanol was used as a hydrogen donor solvent instead of using external hydrogen. Results showed that the bimetallic CoMo/SBA-15 catalyst exhibited significantly higher catalytic activity compared to the monometallic, Co/SBA-15, Mo/SBA-15 or bare SBA-15. The highest phenolic monomers yield of 27.04 wt% was achieved at 290 °C for 4 h over CoMo/SBA-15 catalyst. The inter-unit linkages such as β-O-4', β-β and α-O-4' in lignin were considerably cleaved during the catalytic depolymerization in supercritical ethanol. Meanwhile, higher functionality of carbonyl compounds was present in the non-catalytic bio-oil, while more alkylated phenols were produced over CoMo/SBA-15 catalyst. The major phenolic monomers identified in the catalytic bio-oil were 4-ethylguaiacol (9.15 wt%), 4-methylguaiacol (6.80 wt%), and 4-propylguaiacol (2.85 wt%). These findings suggest that the metal sites and abundant acid active sites of CoMo/SBA-15 had a synergistic effect toward the degradation of different linkages of lignin and production of selective phenolic monomers in bio-oils.

Critical Techniques for Overcoming the Diffusion Limitations in Heterogeneously Catalytic Depolymerization of Lignin

Heterogeneously catalyzed depolymerization of lignin to value-added chemicals is increasingly attractive but highly challengeable. Particularly, the diffusion limitation of lignin macromolecule to the solid catalyst surface is a big barrier, which significantly decreases the yield of monomer while increasing char formation. Therefore, for the potential industrial utilization of lignin, new knowledge focused on the size of lignin particles is of great importance to offer guidance for promoting lignin depolymerization and suppressing condensation in the heterogeneously catalytic systems. In this Review, the size of lignin particles and macromolecules are summarized. Previous approaches for improving the mass diffusion including enhancing the solubility of lignin and exploitation of hierarchical and "solubilized" materials are also discussed. Based on these, a constructive perspective is proposed. Thus, this work provides a new insight on the rational design of heterogeneous catalytic techniques for efficient utilization of the aromatic polymer of lignin.

Synchronous catalytic depolymerization of alkaline lignin to monophenols with in situ-converted hierarchical zeolite for bio-polyurethane production

Catalytic depolymerization of lignin to high-value chemicals is crucial to the comprehensive achievement of sustainable and economic concerns. Herein, we propose a green, practical, and economic strategy for the synchronous catalytic depolymerization of lignin based on in situ conversion of geopolymer precursor to hierarchical zeolite, using water as a mild solvent and without external H₂, additives, co-catalysts or co-solvents. The in situ-converted hierarchical analcime (ANA) zeolite outperformed previously reported representative catalysts, such as PTA/MCM-41 and CuAlMgO_x in lignin depolymerization with a high monophenol yield (95.61 ± 7.89 mg/g). The synergetic effect of the micro-mesoporous structure and enhanced acidic sites of the ANA played a vital role in regulating the monomer composition and the yield of monophenols. The obtained monophenols are rich in -OH groups and can be utilized as a substitute for petroleum resources, such as ethylene glycol or glycerin for the synthesis of bio-polyurethane foams (bio-PUFs). This work expands the scope of using biomass in a sustainable manner to make high-value chemicals and biomaterials.
