Metal-Organic Frameworks in Oxidation Catalysis with Hydrogen Peroxide

A comprehensive study about functionalization and de-functionalization of MOF-808 as a defect-engineered Zr-MOFs for selective catalytic oxidation

In metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), confined space as a chemical nanoreactor is as essential as coordinatively unsaturated metal site catalysis. The properties of MOFs can be adjusted through the incorporation of functional groups and open metal sites in frameworks that can modify the catalytic performance. In this regard, a set of defect-engineered MOFs, Ex-MOF-808(NH2, NO2, H) and Mix-MOF-808(NH2, NO2, H), were synthesized by ultrasonic-assisted linker exchange approach (Ex-MOFs) and solvothermal mixing ligand method (Mix-MOFs), respectively. Further, the relationship between the preparation method, structural properties, and catalytic efficiency of the prepared materials in the selective oxidation of methyl phenyl sulfide (MPS) has been investigated. By analyzing zeta potential, it was found that in the exchange method, the amount of defect and functional groups on the surface of MOFs are more than in the mixing method, which also affects the catalytic activity. In our contribution, mix-MOF-808(NO2) carrying nitro groups at their organic linkers, which has a well-dispersion of nitro groups at the framework exhibits selective conversion of MPS to sulfone (91 %). Furthermore, the performance of stable heterogeneous catalysts was investigated for three cycles, which demonstrated their great potential for advanced catalytic oxidation.

Tuning Reactivity of Zr-Substituted Keggin Phosphotungstate in Alkene Epoxidation through Balancing H2O2 Activation Pathways: Unusual Effect of Base

The Zr-monosubstituted Keggin-type dimeric phosphotungstate (Bu4N)8[{PW11O39Zr(μ-OH)(H2O)}2] (1) efficiently catalyzes epoxidation of C═C bonds in various kinds of alkenes, including terminal ones, with aqueous H2O2 as oxidant. Less sterically hindered double bonds are preferably epoxidized despite their lower nucleophilicity. Basic additives (Bu4NOH) in the amount of 1 equiv per dimer 1 suppress H2O2 unproductive decomposition, increase substrate conversion, improve yield of heterolytic oxidation products and oxidant utilization efficiency, and also affect regioselectivity of epoxidation, enhancing oxygen transfer to sterically hindered electron-rich C═C bonds. Acid additives produce a reverse effect on the substrate conversion and H2O2 efficiency. The reaction mechanism was explored using a range of test substrates, kinetic, and spectroscopic tools. The opposite effects of acid and base additives on alkene epoxidation and H2O2 degradation have been rationalized in terms of their impact on hydrolysis of 1 to form monomeric species, [PW11O39Zr(OH)(H2O)x]4- (1-M, x = 1 or 2), which favors H2O2 homolytic decomposition. The interaction of 1 with H2O2 has been investigated by HR-ESI-MS, ATR-FT-IR, and 31P NMR spectroscopic techniques. The combination of spectroscopic studies and kinetic modeling implicated the existence of two types of dimeric peroxo complexes, [Zr2(μ-η2:η2-O2){PW11O39}2(H2O)x]]8- and [{Zr(μ-η2-O2)}2(PW11O39)2(H2O)y]10-, along with monomeric Zr (hydro)peroxo species that begin to dominate at a high excess of H2O2. Both dimeric μ-η2-peroxo intermediates are inert toward alkenes under stoichiometric conditions. V-shape Hammett plots obtained for epoxidation of p-substituted styrenes suggested a biphilic nature of the active oxidizing species, which are monomeric Zr-hydroperoxo and peroxo species. Small basic additives increase the electrophilicity of the catalyst and decrease its nucleophilicity. HR-ESI-MS has identified a dimeric, most likely, bridging hydroperoxo species [{PW11O39Zr}2(μ-O)(μ-OOH)]9-, which may account for the improved epoxidation selectivity and regioselectivity toward sterically hindered C═C bonds.

Innovative Metal-Organic Frameworks for Targeted Oral Cancer Therapy: A Review

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have proven to be very effective carriers for drug delivery in various biological applications. In recent years, the development of hybrid nanostructures has made significant progress, including developing an innovative MOF-loaded nanocomposite with a highly porous structure and low toxicity that can be used to fabricate core-shell nanocomposites by combining complementary materials. This review study discusses using MOF materials in cancer treatment, imaging, and antibacterial effects, focusing on oral cancer cells. For patients with oral cancer, we offer a regular program for accurately designing and producing various anticancer and antibacterial agents to achieve maximum effectiveness and the lowest side effects. Also, we want to ensure that the anticancer agent works optimally and has as few side effects as possible before it is tested in vitro and in vivo. It is also essential that new anticancer drugs for cancer treatment are tested for efficacy and safety before they go into further research.

Hybridization-driven fluorometric platform based on metal-organic frameworks for the identification of the highly homologous viruses

A novel fluorometric strategy for the simultaneous identification of SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV was successfully established based on a hybridization-induced signal on-off-on mechanism. Here, one part of the probe (P1) of SARS-CoV-2 (P = P1/P2) is partially related to SARS-CoV, while the other part (P2) is completely irrelevant to SARS-CoV. They as smart gatekeepers were anchored on NH₂-MIL-88(Fe) (MOF@P1/P2) to turn off its catalytic performance. Only the specific SARS-CoV-2 genetic target can strongly restore the peroxidase-like activity of MOF@P1/P2. In the presence of o-phenylenediamine, SARS-CoV-2 can be efficiently detected with high sensitivity, accuracy, and reliability. This strategy demonstrated excellent analytical characteristics with a linear range (10^-9 M ∼ 10^-6 M) under the limit of detection of 0.11 nM not only in buffer but also in 10 % serum, which partly shows its practicability. Most importantly, with the help of the auxiliary test of MOF@P1 and MOF@P2, SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV can be efficiently quantified and distinguished. This novel strategy has provided a breakthrough in the development of such identification. In the whole process, only a simple one-step experiment was involved. This circumvents the trouble of pretreatment experiments in traditional methods, including complex enzymatic mixtures, specialized experimental equipment, many primers optimization as well as reverse transcriptase. Additionally, this novel strategy is rapid, low-cost, and easy-to-use tools.

Selective Styrene Oxidation Catalyzed by Phosphate Modified Mesoporous Titanium Silicate

Selective oxidation of organics over an efficient heterogeneous catalyst under mild liquid phase conditions is a very demanding chemical reaction. Herein, we first report the modification of the surface of mesoporous silica MCM-41 material by phosphate for the efficient incorporation of Ti(IV) in the silica framework to obtain highly ordered 2D hexagonal mesoporous material STP-1. STP-1 has been synthesized by using tetraethyl orthosilicate, triethyl phosphate, and titanium isopropoxide as Si, P, and Ti precursors, respectively, in the presence of cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) under hydrothermal conditions. The observed specific surface area and pore volume of STP-1 were 878 m2g−1 and 0.75 ccg−1, respectively. Mesoporous STP-1 has been thoroughly characterized by XRD, FT-IR, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, and TEM analyses. Titanium incorporation (Ti/Si = 0.006) was confirmed from the EDX analysis. This mesoporous STP-1 was used as a heterogeneous catalyst for the selective oxidation of styrene into benzaldehye in the presence of dilute aqueous H2O2 as an oxidizing agent. Various reaction parameters such as the reaction time, the reaction temperature, and the styrene/H2O2 molar ratio were systematically studied in this article. Under optimized reaction conditions, the selectivity of benzaldehyde could reach up to 93.8% from styrene over STP-1. Further, the importance of both titanium and phosphate in the synthesis of STP-1 for selective styrene oxidation was examined by comparing the catalytic result with only a phosphate-modified mesoporous silica material, and it suggests that both titanium and phosphate synergistically play an important role in the high selectivity of benzaldehyde in the liquid phase oxidation of styrene.

Catalytic Activation of Hydrogen Peroxide Using Highly Porous Hydrothermally Modified Manganese Catalysts for Removal of Azithromycin Antibiotic from Aqueous Solution

Hydrogen peroxide catalytic activation holds great promise in the treatment of persistent pollutants. In this study, the novel Mn-Acacair/Al, Mn-Acacarg/Al and Mn-BTCarg/Al catalysts, supported on Al2O3, were applied for rapid hydrogen peroxide activation and azithromycin antibiotic removal. The catalysts were prepared by the calcination-hydrothermal method under air or argon atmosphere. The characterization confirmed that the modification of manganese with acetylacetonate and benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid (H3BTC) O-donor ligands highly improves the catalyst porosity, amorphousity, and abundance of coordinately unsaturated sites, which facilitate the generation of reactive oxygen species. The hydrogen peroxide activation and azithromycin removal reached 98.4% and 99.3% after 40 min using the Mn-BTCarg/Al catalyst with incredible stability and reusability. Only a 5.2% decrease in activity and less than 2% manganese releasing in solutions were detected after five regeneration cycles under the optimum operating conditions. The removal intermediates were identified by LC-MS/MS analysis, and the pathways were proposed. The hydroxylation and decarboxylation reactions play a key role in the degradation reaction.

Effects of Cu Species on Liquid-Phase Partial Oxidation of Methane with H2O2 over Cu-Fe/ZSM-5 Catalysts

In this study, a Cu-promoted Fe/ZSM-5 catalyst was examined to reveal the effects of Cu species in selective oxidation of methane into methane oxygenates using H2O2 in water. Cu/ZSM-5, Cu-Fe/ZSM-5, and Fe/ZSM-5 catalysts were prepared using wet impregnation, solid-state ion exchange, and ion-exchange methods. Various techniques, including nitrogen physisorption, temperature-programmed reduction with H2, UV-vis spectroscopy, and FT-IR spectroscopy after NO adsorption, were utilized to characterize the catalysts. The promotional effect of Cu on the Cu-Fe/ZSM-5 catalyst in terms of methanol selectivity was confirmed. The preparation method has a considerable influence on the catalyst performance, and the ion-exchange method is the most effective. However, leaching of the Cu species was observed during this reaction, which can affect the quantification of formic acid by 1H-NMR. The homogeneous Cu species increase hydrogen peroxide decomposition and CO2 selectivity, which is undesirable for this reaction.

Metal–Organic Frameworks for Electrocatalytic Sensing of Hydrogen Peroxide

The electrochemical detection of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) has become more and more important in industrial production, daily life, biological process, green energy chemistry, and other fields (especially for the detection of low concentration of H₂O_2). Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising candidates to replace the established H₂O₂ sensors based on precious metals or enzymes. This review summarizes recent advances in MOF-based H₂O₂ electrochemical sensors, including conductive MOFs, MOFs with chemical modifications, MOFs-composites, and MOF derivatives. Finally, the challenges and prospects for the optimization and design of H₂O₂ electrochemical sensors with ultra-low detection limit and long-life are presented.

Novel Copper(II) Complexes with Dipinodiazafluorene Ligands: Synthesis, Structure, Magnetic and Catalytic Properties

The reactions of CuX₂ (X = Cl, Br) with dipinodiazafluorenes yielded four new complexes [CuX₂L₁]₂ (X = Cl (1), Br (2), L₁ = (1R,3R,8R,10R)-2,2,9,9-Tetramethyl-3,4,7,8,9,10-hexahydro-1H-1,3:8,10-dimethanocyclopenta [1,2-b:5,4-b’]diquinolin-12(2H)-one) and [(CuX₂)₂L₂]n (X = Cl (3), Br (4), L₂ = (1R,3R,8R,10R,1’R,3’R,8’R,10’R)-2,2,2’,2’,9,9,9’,9’-Octamethyl-1,1’,2,2’,3,3’,4,4’,7,7’,8,8’,9,9’,10,10’-hexadecahydro-1,3:1’,3’:8,10:8’,10’-tetramethano-12,12’-bi(cyclopenta [1,2-b:5,4-b’]diquinolinylidene). The complexes were characterized by IR and EPR spectroscopy, HR-ESI-MS and elemental analysis. The crystal structures of compounds 1, 2 and 4 were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Complexes 1–2 have a monomeric structure, while complex 4 has a polymeric structure due to additional coordinating N,N sites in L₂. All complexes contain a binuclear fragment {Cu₂(μ-X)_2×2} (X = Cl, Br) in their structures. Each copper atom has a distorted square-pyramidal coordination environment formed by two nitrogen atoms and three halogen atoms. The Cu-N_ax distance is elongated compared to Cu-N_eq. The EPR spectra of compounds 1–4 in CH₃CN confirm their paramagnetic nature due to the d⁹ electronic configuration of the copper(II) ion. The magnetic properties of all compounds were studied by the method of static magnetic susceptibility. For complexes 1 and 2, the effective magnetic moments are µ_eff ≈ 1.87 and 1.83 µ_B (per each Cu²⁺ ion), respectively, in the temperature range 50–300 K, which are close to the theoretical spin value (1.73 µ_B). Ferromagnetic exchange interactions between Cu(II) ions inside {Cu₂(μ-X)₂X₂} (X = Cl, Br) dimers (J/k_B ≈ 25 and 31 K for 1 and 2, respectively) or between dimers (θ′ ≈ 0.30 and 0.47 K for 1 and 2, respectively) were found at low temperatures. For compounds 3 and 4, the magnetic susceptibility is well described by the Curie–Weiss law in the temperature range 1.77–300 K with µ_eff ≈ 1.72 and 1.70 µ_B for 3 and 4, respectively, and weak antiferromagnetic interactions (θ ≈ −0.4 K for 3 and −0.65 K for 4). Complexes 1–4 exhibit high catalytic activity in the oxidation of alkanes and alcohols with peroxides. The maximum yield of cyclohexane oxidation products reached 50% (complex 3). Based on the data on the study of regio- and bond-selectivity, it was concluded that hydroxyl radicals play a decisive role in the oxidation reaction. The initial products in reactions with alkanes are alkyl hydroperoxides.

Development of Amine-Functionalized Metal-Organic Frameworks Hollow Fiber Mixed Matrix Membranes for CO2 and CH4 Separation: A Review

CO₂ separation from raw natural gas can be achieved through the use of the promising membrane-based technology. Polymeric membranes are a known method for separating CO₂ but suffer from trade-offs between its permeability and selectivity. Therefore, through the use of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) which utilizes inorganic or hybrid fillers such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in polymeric matrix, the permeability and selectivity trade-off can be overcome and possibly surpass the Robeson Upper Bounds. In this study, various types of MOFs are explored in terms of its structure and properties such as thermal and chemical stability. Next, the use of amine and non-amine functionalized MOFs in MMMs development are compared in order to investigate the effects of amine functionalization on the membrane gas separation performance for flat sheet and hollow fiber configurations as reported in the literature. Moreover, the gas transport properties and various challenges faced by hollow fiber mixed matrix membranes (HFMMMs) are discussed. In addition, the utilization of amine functionalization MOF for mitigating the challenges faced is included. Finally, the future directions of amine-functionalized MOF HFMMMs are discussed for the fields of CO₂ separation.

Sono-oxidative desulfurization of fuels using heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts: A comprehensive review

Recently, environmental pollution has increased significantly due to petroleum-based fuels widely used in vehicles. This environmental pollution is mainly due to the acidic SO₂ gas generated by the combustion of fuels and emitted into the atmosphere. SO₂ gas causes not only acid rain but also corrosion of metal parts of engines in vehicles. In addition, it functions as a catalyst poison in catalytic converters in exhaust system. Due to these damages, strict regulations have been introduced to reduce the amount of sulfur in fuels. As of 2005, the permissible amount of sulfur in diesel fuels in Europe and America has been limited to 10 and 15 ppm by weight, respectively. Due to the decreasing oil reserves in the world, high viscosity petroleums containing high sulfur and heavier fractions (i.e., low-quality oils) are increasing, thus making desulfurization difficult and leading to high costly process. Since time and economic loss are very important today, these two terms have to be reduced to a minimum. Recently, ultrasound wave in ODS shown as an alternative to HDS is utilized to further increase desulfurization in shorter times. Ultrasound wave locally creates high temperatures and high pressures (hot-spot theory) in liquid, causing the desulfurization reaction to accelerate further. In this review, the advantages and difficulties of oxidative desulfurization, the economics of ultrasound-assisted oxidative desulfurization are summarized and recommendations for improving the process are presented.

Light alkane oxidation over well-defined active sites in metal–organic framework materials

We review structure–catalytic property relationships for MOF materials used in the direct oxidation of light alkanes, focusing specifically on the elucidation of active site structures and probes for reaction mechanisms.

Enhanced Catalytic Hydrogen Peroxide Production from Hydroxylamine Oxidation on Modified Activated Carbon Fibers: The Role of Surface Chemistry

Herein, direct production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) through hydroxylamine (NH2OH) oxidation by molecular oxygen was greatly enhanced over modified activated carbon fiber (ACF) catalysts. We revealed that the higher content of pyrrolic/pyridone nitrogen (N5) and carboxyl-anhydride oxygen could effectively promote the higher selectivity and yield of H2O2. By changing the volume ratio of the concentrated H2SO4 and HNO3, the content of N5 and surface oxygen containing groups on ACF were selectively tuned. The ACF catalyst with the highest N5 content and abundant carboxyl-anhydride oxygen containing groups was demonstrated to have the highest activity toward catalytic H2O2 production, enabling the selectivity of H2O2 over 99.3% and the concentration of H2O2 reaching 123 mmol/L. The crucial effects of nitrogen species were expounded by the correlation of the selectivity of H2O2 with the content of N5 from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The possible reaction pathway over ACF catalysts promoted by N5 was also shown.

Mild Oxidation of Organosulfur Compounds with H2O2 over Metal-Containing Microporous and Mesoporous Catalysts

Mild catalytic oxidation of thioethers and thiophenes is an important reaction for the synthesis of molecules with pharmaceutical interest, as well as for the development of efficient processes able to remove sulfur-containing pollutants from fuels and wastewater. With respect to the green chemistry principles, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is the ideal oxidant and the Me-containing porous materials (Me = Ti, V, Mo, W, Zr) are among the best heterogeneous catalysts for these applications. The main classes of catalysts, including Me-microporous and mesoporous silicates, Me-layered double hydroxides, Me-metal–organic frameworks, are described in this review. The catalytic active species generated in the presence of H2O2, as well as the probable oxidation mechanisms, are also addressed. The reactivity of molecules in the sulfoxidation process and the role played by the solvents are explored.

Substrate–Solvent Crosstalk—Effects on Reaction Kinetics and Product Selectivity in Olefin Oxidation Catalysis

In this work, we explored how solvents can affect olefin oxidation reactions catalyzed by MCM-bpy-Mo catalysts and whether their control can be made with those players. The results of this study demonstrated that polar and apolar aprotic solvents modulated the reactions in different ways. Experimental data showed that acetonitrile (aprotic polar) could largely hinder the reaction rate, whereas toluene (aprotic apolar) did not. In both cases, product selectivity at isoconversion was not affected. Further insights were obtained by means of neutron diffraction experiments, which confirmed the kinetic data and allowed for the proposal of a model based on substrate–solvent crosstalk by means of hydrogen bonding. In addition, the model was also validated in the ring-opening reaction (overoxidation) of styrene oxide to benzaldehyde, which progressed when toluene was the solvent (reaching 31% styrene oxide conversion) but was strongly hindered when acetonitrile was used instead (reaching only 7% conversion) due to the establishment of H-bonds in the latter. Although this model was confirmed and validated for olefin oxidation reactions, it can be envisaged that it may also be applied to other catalytic reaction systems where reaction control is critical, thereby widening its use.

Reaction pathways and deactivation mechanisms of isostructural Cr and Fe MIL-101 during liquid-phase styrene oxidation by hydrogen peroxide

Isostructural MIL-101(Cr, Fe) is investigated as a modular platform to quantify differences in reactivity, selectivity, and deactivation as functions of intrinsic material properties for styrene oxidation by hydrogen peroxide at mild conditions.
