Light-Driven Hydrogen Evolution Assisted by Covalent Organic Frameworks

Modulating β-Keto-enamine-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks for Photocatalytic Atom-Transfer Radical Addition Reaction

The atom-transfer radical addition (ATRA) reaction simultaneously forges carbon-carbon and carbon-halogen bonds. However, frequently-used photosensitizers such as precious transition metal complexes, or organic dyes have limitations in terms of their potential toxicity and recyclability. Three β-ketoenamine-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) from 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol and 1,4-phenylenediamines with variable transient photocurrent and photocatalytic activity have been prepared. A COF bearing electron-deficient Cl atoms displayed the highest photocatalytic activity toward the ATRA reaction of polyhalogenated alkanes to give halogenated olefins under visible light at room temperature. This heterogeneous photocatalyst exhibited good functional group tolerance and could be recycled without significant loss of activity.

Fabrication and Characterization of Tantalum-Iron Composites for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution represents a transformative avenue in addressing the challenges of fossil fuels, heralding a renewable and pristine alternative to conventional fossil fuel-driven energy paradigms. Yet, a formidable challenge is crafting a high-efficacy, stable photocatalyst that optimizes solar energy transduction and charge partitioning even under adversarial conditions. Within the scope of this investigation, tantalum-iron heterojunction composites characterized by intricate, discoidal nanostructured materials were meticulously synthesized using a solvothermal-augmented calcination protocol. The X-ray diffraction, coupled with Rietveld refinements delineated the nuanced alterations in phase constitution and structural intricacies engendered by disparate calcination thermal regimes. An exhaustive study encompassing nano-morphology, electronic band attributes, bandgap dynamics, and a rigorous appraisal of their photocatalytic prowess has been executed for the composite array. Intriguingly, the specimen denoted as 1000-1, a heterojunction composite of TaO2/Ta2O5/FeTaO4, manifested an exemplary photocatalytic hydrogen evolution capacity, registering at 51.24 µmol/g, which eclipses its counterpart, 1100-1 (Ta2O5/FeTaO4), by an impressive margin. Such revelations amplify the prospective utility of these tantalum iron matrices, endorsing their candidacy as potent agents for sustainable hydrogen production via photocatalysis.

Benzotrithiophene-based Covalent Organic Framework Photocatalysts with Controlled Conjugation of Building Blocks for Charge Stabilization

Covalent organic frameworks have recently shown high potential for photocatalytic hydrogen production. However, their structure-property-activity relationship has not been sufficiently explored to identify a research direction for structural design. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of four benzotrithiophene (BTT)-based covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with different conjugations of building units, and their photocatalytic activity for hydrogen production. All four BTT-COFs had slipped parallel stacking patterns with high crystallinity and specific surface areas. The change in the degree of conjugation was found to rationally tune the rate of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Based on the experimental and calculation results, the tunable photocatalytic performance could be mainly attributed to the electron affinity and charge trapping of the electron accepting units. This study provides important insights for designing covalent organic frameworks for efficient photocatalysts.

Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity of Hyper-Cross-Linked Polymers Toward Amines Oxidation Coupled with H2 O2 Generation through Extending Monomer's Conjugation Degree

Visible-light-driven amines oxidation coupled with hydrogen peroxide (H₂ O₂ ) generation is a promising way to convert solar energy to chemical energy. Herein, a series of hyper-cross-linked polymers (HCPs) photocatalysts with different arenes monomers, including benzene (BE), diphenyl (DP), p-terphenyl (TP), or p-quaterphenyl (QP), were synthesized by simple Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction. Owing to the maximum monomer's conjunction degree and excellent oxygen (O₂ ) adsorption capacity, QP-HCPs exhibited highest photocatalytic activity for benzylamine oxidation coupled with H₂ O₂ generation under the irradiation of 455 nm Blue LED lamp. More than 99 % of benzylamine could be converted to N-benzylidenebenzylamine within 60 min. In addition, nearly stoichiometric H₂ O₂ was synchronously obtained with a high production rate of 9.3 mmol g_cat ^-1 h^-1 . Our work not only demonstrated that the photocatalytic activity of HCPs photocatalysts significantly depends on monomer's conjunction degree, but also provided a new strategy for converting solar energy to chemical energy.

Insights into the light-driven hydrogen evolution reaction of mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride decorated with Pt or Ru nanoparticles

Ru or Pt nanoparticles have been prepared following the organometallic approach and deposited onto the surface of mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (mpg-CN). Three different Ru-based samples have also been compared to investigate the effect of 4-phenylpyridine as a stabilizing agent. The photocatalytic performance towards the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has been tested showing that all hybrid systems clearly outperform the photocatalytic activity of bare mpg-CN. In particular, Pt-decorated mpg-CN yields the largest H₂ production upon visible-light irradiation (870 μmol h^-1 g^-1, TOF = 14.1 h^-1, TON = 339 after 24 h) when compared with the Ru-based samples (137-155 μmol h^-1 g^-1, TOFs between 2.3-2.7 h^-1, TONs between 54-57 after 24 h). Long-term photochemical tests (up to 65 h irradiation) show also an improved stability of the Pt-based samples over the Ru counterpart. Photophysical experiments aimed at rationalizing the photocatalytic performance of the different hybrid systems elucidate that the enhanced activity of the Pt-decorated mpg-CN over the Ru-based analogues arises from improved electron transfer kinetics from mpg-CN to the metal nanoparticles.

Solvent-Free Visible Light Photocatalytic Oxidation Processes Mediated by Transparent Films of an Imine-Based Organic Polymer

Reaction between concentrated solutions of phenotiazine containing trialdehyde building block 4,4′,4″-(10-phenothiazine-3,7,10-triyl)tribenzaldehyde and (1R,2R)-cyclohexane-1,2-diamine results in the formation of a yellow transparent film. Exhaustive characterization of this material indicates that it is the result of the assembly of a linear polymer resulting from the linking of imine-based macrocycles. Phenotiazine units confer to this plastic the optical properties characteristic of photocatalytic materials. The transparency of the obtained material enabled the performance of solvent-free photocatalytic processes. This concept is illustrated by the oxidation of liquid organic sulfides, which can be performed in a recyclable manner. According to selective quenching experiments, such processes are the result of the energy transfer to oxygen molecule, generating singlet oxygen that is able to activate the sulfide molecules directly.

Immobilized covalent triazine frameworks films as effective photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction

Covalent triazine frameworks have recently been demonstrated as promising materials for photocatalytic water splitting and are usually used in the form of suspended powder. From a practical point of view, immobilized CTFs materials are more suitable for large-scale water splitting, owing to their convenient separation and recycling potential. However, existing synthetic approaches mainly result in insoluble and unprocessable powders, which make their future device application a formidable challenge. Herein, we report an aliphatic amine-assisted interfacial polymerization method to obtain free-standing, semicrystalline CTFs film with excellent photoelectric performance. The lateral size of the film was up to 250 cm², and average thickness can be tuned from 30 to 500 nm. The semicrystalline structure was confirmed by high-resolution transmission electron microscope, powder X-ray diffraction, grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering, and small-angle X-ray scattering analysis. Intrigued by the good light absorption, crystalline structure, and large lateral size of the film, the film immobilized on a glass support exhibited good photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance (5.4 mmol h^-1 m^-2) with the presence of co-catalysts i.e., Pt nanoparticles and was easy to recycle.
