Synthesis of Propylene Carbonate by Urea Alcoholysis—Recent Advances

Ionic Liquid Catalysis in Cyclic Carbonate Synthesis for the Development of Soybean Oil-Based Non-Isocyanate Polyurethane Foams

A method for obtaining non-isocyanate polyurethane (NIPU) foams from cyclic carbonate (CC) based on soybean oil was developed. For this purpose, cyclic carbonate was synthesized from epoxidized soybean oil and CO2 using various ionic liquids (ILs) as catalysts. Among the tested ILs, the highest selectivity (100%) and CC yield (98%) were achieved for 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ([emim]Br). Without any purification, the resulting cyclic carbonate was reacted directly with diethylenetriamine as a model crosslinking agent to produce NIPU foams. It was found that the soybean oil-based CC synthesized with bromide imidazolium ionic liquids exhibited significantly shorter gelling times (8 min 50 s for [emim]Br and 9 min 35 s for [bmim]Br) compared to those obtained with the conventional TBAB catalyst (26 min 15 s). A shorter gelling time is a crucial parameter for the crosslinking process in foams. The obtained foams were subjected to mechanical tests and a morphology analysis.

Exploring the Performance Improvement for CO2 Chemical Fixation in Zn/ZnMg-MOFs

A new 3D zinc-based metal-organic framework {[Zn7L2(DMF)3(H2O)(OH)2]·5DMF}n (1) (H6L = 5,5',5″-(methylsilanetriyl) triisophthalic acid) was constructed with an organosilicon-based linker, where H6L is a tetrahedral structure furnished with rich -COO- chelating sites for Zn(II) immobilization. Compound 1 exhibited two types of irregular one-dimensional channels and a three-dimensional skeleton with large specific surface area, making it a promising catalytic platform. Moreover, by incorporation of the second metal ion into the inorganic node of framework 1, isomorphic bimetallic MOF ZnMg-1 was successfully synthesized. ZnMg-1 demonstrated enhanced catalytic activity compared to 1 under identical conditions. Contrast experiments and theoretical calculations indicate that bimetallic active sites play a facilitating role in the chemical fixation of epoxides and CO2. It indicated that efficient chemical fixation of CO2 to cyclic carbonates was obtained over isomorphic MOF catalysts 1 and ZnMg-1.

Efficient Propylene Carbonate Synthesis from Urea and Propylene Glycol over Calcium Oxide-Magnesium Oxide Catalysts

A series of calcium oxide-magnesium oxide (CaO-MgO) catalysts were prepared under the effects of different precipitating agents and using varied Mg/Ca ratios. The physiochemical characteristics of the prepared catalysts were analyzed using XRD, FE-SEM, BET, FTIR, and TG/DTA techniques. Quantification of basic active sites present on the surface of the CaO-MgO catalysts was carried out using the Hammett indicator method. The as-prepared mixed oxide samples were tested for propylene carbonate (PC) synthesis through the alcoholysis of urea with propylene glycol (PG). The effects of the catalyst composition, catalyst dose, reaction temperature, and contact time on the PC yield and selectivity were investigated. The maximum PC yield of 96%, with high PC selectivity of 99% and a urea conversion rate of 96%, was attained at 160 °C using CaO-MgO catalysts prepared using a Mg/Ca ratio of 1 and Na₂CO₃ as a precipitating agent. The best-performing catalysts also exhibited good reusability without any significant loss in PC selectivity. It is expected that the present study will provide useful information on the suitability of different precipitating agents with respect to the catalytic properties of the oxides of Ca and Mg and their application in the synthesis of organic carbonates.
