Microalgal-based macro-hollow loofah fiber bio-composite for methylene blue removal: A promising step for a green adsorbent

This study looked into how well the macro-hollow loofah fiber with and without the bio-attaching with green microalga (Chlamydomonas reinhardtii OR242521) was applied methylene blue elimination from water. Based on the results, the biosorption capacity of loofah sponge for methylene blue significantly increased with the increase of contact time, weight of microalgal biofilm, and methylene blue concentration. The maximum biosorption capacity was achieved after 120 min, after 0.042 mgg-1 biofilm weight, and MB concentration of 140 mgL-1. Furthermore, methylene blue's biosorption capacity was strongly affected by pH, reaching its maximum at pH 7. The biosorption capacity of the bio-attached loofah sponge was much higher than that of the loofah sponge, revealing that the microalgae bio-attachment enhanced the biosorption capacity of the loofah sponge. At the end of the MB biosorption process, the used bio-attached loofah sponge can still be utilized once more for the same purpose after the desorption of MB but with a lower biosorption capacity. Furthermore, the loofah sponge could also be applied as a bio-sorbent after domestic use. According to this study, the loofah sponge with or without algal biofilm attachment could be applied as a low-cost efficient bio-sorbent for methylene blue removal from water. However, the loofah sponge's ability for biosorption was dramatically increased by the bio-attachment of microalgae, making it a more potent bio-sorbent. Likewise, this study offers insights into the variables influencing the biosorption capacity of loofah sponges and bio-attached loofah sponges, which could be beneficial for enhancing the biosorption processes.

Unveiling the Latest Developments in Molecularly Imprinted Photocatalysts: A State-of-the-Art Review

Responding to the growing concerns about environmental pollutants, scientists are increasingly turning to innovative solutions rooted in the field of environmental science. One such promising avenue combines the robustness of traditional photocatalysis with the precision of molecular imprinting, leading to the proposition of molecularly imprinted photocatalysts (MIPCs). These MIPCs hold the potential to specifically target and eliminate environmental pollutants, marking them as a promising tool in modern environmental remediation. As researchers delve deeper into this field, the design and optimization of MIPCs have become hotbeds for scientific inquiry. This comprehensive overview delves into the multifaceted approaches to MIPC design, elucidating on aspects like the selection of appropriate photocatalytic bases, the pivotal role of templates, the choice of monomeric building blocks, and the integration of effective cross-linking agents. However, as with all burgeoning technologies, the development of MIPCs is not without its challenges. These potential impediments to the successful innovation and implementation of MIPCs are also explored.

MOF-Derived Spindle-Shaped Z-Scheme ZnO/ZnFe2O4 Heterojunction: A Magnetic Recovery Catalyst for Efficient Photothermal Degradation of Tetracycline Hydrochloride

The development of photocatalysts with a wide spectral response and effective carrier separation capability is essential for the green degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride. In this study, a magnetic recyclable Z-scheme ZnO/ZnFe2O4 heterojunction (ZZF) was successfully constructed via the solid phase method, using MIL-88A(Fe)@Zn as the precursor. An appropriate band gap width and Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism provide ZZF with excellent visible light absorption performance, efficient charge separation, and a strong redox ability. Under visible light irradiation, the degradation efficiency of tetracycline hydrochloride for the optimal sample can reach 86.3% within 75 min in deionized water and 92.9% within 60 min in tap water, exhibiting superior stability and reusability after five cycles. Moreover, the catalyst in the water can be conveniently recovered by magnetic force. After visible light irradiation for 70 min, the temperature of the reaction system increased by 21.9 °C. Its degradation constant (35.53 × 10-3 min-1) increased to 5.1 times that at room temperature (6.95 × 10-3 min-1). Using thermal energy enhances the kinetic driving force of the reactants and facilitates carrier migration, meaning that more charge is available for the production of •O2- and •OH. This study provides a potential candidate for the efficient degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride by combining thermal catalysis with a photocatalytic heterojunction.

Controllable Synthesis, Photocatalytic Property, and Mechanism of a Novel POM-Based Direct Z-Scheme Nano-Heterojunction α-Fe2O3/P2Mo18

In order to improve photocatalytic activity and maximize solar energy use, a new composite material Fe2O3/P2Mo18 was prepared by combining polyoxometalates (P2Mo18) with Fe2O3 nanosheets. FT-IR, XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, UV-vis, EIS, and PL were used to characterize the composite material, and nano-Fe2O3 of different sizes and morphologies with a controllable absorption range was prepared by adjusting the reaction time, and, when combined with P2Mo18, a composite photocatalyst with efficient visible light response and photocatalytic activity was constructed. The EIS, Bode, and PL spectra analysis results show that the Fe2O3/P2Mo18 composite material has outstanding interfacial charge transfer efficiency and potential photocatalytic application possibilities. Model reactions of methylene blue (MB) and Cr (VI) photodegradation were used to evaluate the redox activity of Fe2O3/P2Mo18 composites under simulated visible light. The photocatalytic degradation rate was as high as 98.98% for MB and 96.86% for Cr (VI) when the composite ratio was Fe2O3/P2Mo18-5%. This research opens up a new avenue for the development of high-performance photocatalysts.

Valorization of lignocellulosic biomass into sustainable materials for adsorption and photocatalytic applications in water and air remediation

An exponential rise in global pollution and industrialization has led to significant economic and environmental problems due to the insufficient application of green technology for the chemical industry and energy production. Nowadays, the scientific and environmental/industrial communities push to apply new sustainable ways and/or materials for energy/environmental applications through the so-called circular (bio)economy. One of today's hottest topics is primarily valorizing available lignocellulosic biomass wastes into valuable materials for energy or environmentally related applications. This review aims to discuss, from both the chemistry and mechanistic points of view, the recent finding reported on the valorization of biomass wastes into valuable carbon materials. The sorption mechanisms using carbon materials prepared from biomass wastes by emphasizing the relationship between the synthesis route or/and surface modification and the retention performance were discussed towards the removal of organic and heavy metal pollutants from water or air (NO_x, CO₂, VOCs, SO₂, and Hg⁰). Photocatalytic nanoparticle-coated biomass-based carbon materials have proved to be successful composites for water remediation. The review discusses and simplifies the most raised interfacial, photonic, and physical mechanisms that might take place on the surface of these composites under light irradiation. Finally, the review examines the economic benefits and circular bioeconomy and the challenges of transferring this technology to more comprehensive applications.

Efficient Day-and-Night NO2 Abatement by Polyaniline/TiO2 Nanocomposites

Finding innovative and highly performing approaches for NOx degradation represents a key challenge to enhance the air quality of our environment. In this study, the high efficiency of PANI/TiO₂ nanostructures in the NO₂ abatement both in the dark and under light irradiation is demonstrated for the first time. Heterostructures were synthesized by a "green" method and their composition, structure, morphology and oxidation state were investigated by a combination of characterization techniques. The results show that the unique PANI structure promotes two mechanisms for the NO₂ abatement in the dark (adsorption on the polymeric chains and chemical reduction to NO), whereas the photocatalytic behavior prevails under light irradiation, leading to the complete NOx degradation. The best-performing materials were subjected to recycling tests, thereby showing high stability without any significant activity loss. Overall, the presented material can represent an innovative and efficient night-and-day solution for NOx abatement.

pH-Driven Selective Adsorption of Multi-Dyes Solutions by Loofah Sponge and Polyaniline-Modified Loofah Sponge

In the last decades, sorbent materials characterized by low selectivity have been developed for the removal of pollutants (in particular dyes) from wastewater. However, following the circular economy perspective, the possibility to selectively adsorb and desorb dyes molecules today represents an unavoidable challenge deserving to be faced. Herein, we propose a sequential treatment based on the use of PANI-modified loofah (P-LS) and loofah sponge (LS) to selectively adsorb cationic (rhodamine, RHB, and methylene blue, MB) and anionic (methyl orange, MO) dyes mixed in aqueous solution by tuning the adsorption pH (100% MO removal by P-LS and 100% and 70% abatement of MB and RHB, respectively, by LS). The system maintained high sorption activity for five consecutive cycles. A simple and effective regeneration procedure for the spent adsorbents permits the recovery of the initial sorption capability of the materials (81% for MO, ca. 85% for both RHB and MB, respectively) and, at the same time, the selective release of most of the adsorbed cationic dyes (50% of the adsorbed MB and 50% of the adsorbed RHB), although the procedure failed regarding the release of the anionic component. This approach paved the way to overcome the traditional procedure based on an indiscriminate removal/degradation of pollutants, making the industrial wastewater a potential source of useful chemicals.
