Abstract
A heterogenized iridium catalyst was employed to perform photoredox catalysis for a collection of mechanistically orthogonal reactions using very low quantities of iridium (0.01-0.1 mol %). The heterogenized construct consists of an organometallic iridium coordination complex bonded to an aluminum metal oxide solid-state support via an anchoring group. The solid-state support allows for easy recovery and reusability of the catalyst. Evaluation of the catalytic activity was performed with five different reactions, showing broad applicability and demonstrating the general potential for a heterogenized strategy. Moreover, the heterogenized catalyst was shown to be reusable up to five times and also mediated the reactions with much higher efficiency than the original processes by employing the corresponding homogeneous catalyst. As a result of the low catalyst loadings employed, the feasibility of reusage, and faster reaction times, this catalyst offers a more sustainable option when precious metal catalysts are used in organic synthesis. Finally, the catalyst was successfully applied to a gram-scale reaction, showing it is susceptible to scalability.

Abstract
Energy transfer plays a special role in photocatalysis by utilizing the potential energy of the excited state through indirect excitation, in which a photosensitizer determines the thermodynamic feasibility of the reaction. Bioinspired by the energy-transfer ability of natural product cercosporin, here we developed a green and highly efficient organic photosensitizer HiBRCP (hexaisobutyryl reduced cercosporin) through structural modification of cercosporin. After structural manipulation, its triplet energy was greatly improved, and then, it could markedly promote the efficient geometrical isomerization of alkenes from the E-isomer to the Z-isomer. Moreover, it was also effective for energy-transfer-mediated organometallic catalysis, which allowed realization of the cross-coupling of aryl bromides and carboxylic acids through efficient energy transfer from HiBRCP to nickel complexes. Thus, the study on the relationship between structural manipulation and their photophysical properties provided guidance for further modification of cercosporin, which could be applied to more meaningful and challenging energy-transfer reactions.

Abstract
Geometrical E → Z alkene isomerization is intimately entwined in the historical fabric of organic photochemistry and is enjoying a renaissance (Roth et al. Angew. Chem., Int. Ed. Engl. 1989 28, 1193-1207). This is a consequence of the fundamental stereochemical importance of Z-alkenes, juxtaposed with frustrations in thermal reactivity that are rooted in microscopic reversibility. Accessing excited state reactivity paradigms allow this latter obstacle to be circumnavigated by exploiting subtle differences in the photophysical behavior of the substrate and product chromophores: this provides a molecular basis for directionality. While direct irradiation is operationally simple, photosensitization via selective energy transfer enables augmentation of the alkene repertoire to include substrates that are not directly excited by photons. Through sustained innovation, an impressive portfolio of tailored small molecule catalysts with a range of triplet energies are now widely available to facilitate contra-thermodynamic and thermo-neutral isomerization reactions to generate Z-alkene fragments. This review is intended to serve as a practical guide covering the geometric isomerization of alkenes enabled by energy transfer catalysis from 2000 to 2020, and as a logical sequel to the excellent treatment by Dugave and Demange (Chem. Rev. 2003 103, 2475-2532). The mechanistic foundations underpinning isomerization selectivity are discussed together with induction models and rationales to explain the counterintuitive directionality of these processes in which very small energy differences distinguish substrate from product. Implications for subsequent stereospecific transformations, application in total synthesis, regioselective polyene isomerization, and spatiotemporal control of pre-existing alkene configuration in a broader sense are discussed.

Abstract
A photocatalysis strategy for the regioselective synthesis of 3-functionalized coumarins is reported. With visible light irradiation, a direct and regioselective C(sp2)-C(sp3) coupling reaction of 3-(2-hydroxyphenyl)acrylates with ethers or thioethers occurs by using Ru(bpy)3Cl2·6H2O as a photocatalyst and TBHP as an oxidant. The cascade process involves alkenylation of the C(sp3)-H bond of ethers and lactonization, furnishing 3-alkylated coumarins as the final products. This approach is characterized by a broad substrate scope, mild reaction conditions, and simplified operation. The synthesis of 3-alkylated coumarins could be realized by a one-pot procedure, starting from commercially available salicylaldehyde.

Abstract
A new methodology for the pH-triggered degradation of polymers or for the release of drugs under visible light irradiation based on the cyclization of ortho-hydroxy-cinnamates (oHC) to coumarins is described. The key oHC structural motif can be readily incorporated into the rational design of novel photocleavable polymers via click chemistry. This main-chain moiety undergoes a fast photocleavage when irradiated with 455 nm light provided that a suitable base is added. A series of polyethylene glycol-alt-ortho-hydroxy cinnamate (polyethylene glycol (PEG)n -alt-oHC)-based polymers are synthesized and the time-dependent visible-light initiated cleavage of the photoactive monomer and polymer is investigated in solution by a variety of spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques. The photo-degradation behavior of the water-soluble poly(PEG2000 -alt-oHC) is investigated within a broad pH range (pH = 2.1-11.8), demonstrating fast degradation at pH 11.8, while the stability of the polymer is greatly enhanced at pH 2.1. Moreover, the neat polymer shows long-term stability under daylight conditions, thus allowing its storage without special precautions. In addition, two water-soluble PEG-based drug-carrier molecules (mPEG2000 -oHC-benzhydrol/phenol) are synthesized and used for drug delivery studies, monitoring the process by UV-vis spectroscopy in an ON/OFF intermittent manner.

Abstract
A light-driven atom-transfer radical substitution (ATRS) and carboesterification reaction of alkenes with alkyl halides has been developed using PTH as the organo-photoredox catalyst. Two types of products were obtained, depending on the additive and solvent used during the reaction. Primary, secondary, and tertiary alkyl halides reacted to give the ATRS products. This protocol has several advantages: it requires mild reaction conditions and a low catalyst loading and exhibits a broad substrate scope and good functional group tolerance. Mechanistic studies indicate that alkyl radicals might be generated as the key intermediates via photocatalysis, providing a new direction for ATRS reactions.

Abstract
In this article, a high-yield method for the synthesis of sulfonyl 9-fluorenylidenes is described, which consists of a one-pot straightforward three-step synthetic route, including (i) CuBr2-mediated α-bromination of o-arylacetophenone, (ii) sequential nucleophilic substitution of the resulting α-bromo o-arylacetophenone with sodium sulfinate (RSO2Na), and (iii) the CuBr2-mediated intramolecular Friedel-Crafts cyclizative dehydration. A plausible mechanism is proposed and discussed. This protocol provides a highly effective regio- and stereoselective annulation via the formation of one carbon-carbon (C-C) bond and one carbon-sulfur (C-S) bond.

Abstract
An efficient cooperative chiral Lewis acid/photoredox catalytic system for engaging highly reactive radicals in highly enantioselective conjugate addition to α,β-unsaturated carbonyls is highly desirable. Direct photoexcitation of unbound substrates typically induces undesired background pathways for racemic products and remains a formidable challenge to be addressed in the area of enantioselective photocatalysis. Herein, we report a cooperative catalytic system comprising a chiral Cu(i) complex and an Ir(iii) photocatalyst fueled by visible-light irradiation that allows for seamless integration of the catalytic formation of α-amino alkyl radicals and subsequent enantioselective addition to α,β-unsaturated amides. A 7-aza-6-MeO-indoline attachment on the amide substrates plays a pivotal role in suppressing the undesired pathways, resulting in excellent enantioselectivity and enabling expedited access to valuable γ-aminobutyramides. The indoline amide was readily diversified with full recovery of the azaindoline attachment, highlighting the synthetic utility of this cooperative catalytic system. An efficient cooperative chiral Lewis acid and photoredox catalytic system towards the highly enantioselective radical conjugate addition of α-amino radicals to α,β-unsaturated amides is developed with the implementation of unique auxiliaries.![]()

Abstract
An efficient geometrical E→Z isomerisation of alkenyl silanes is disclosed via selective energy transfer using an inexpensive organic sensitiser. Characterised by operational simplicity, short reaction times (2 h), and broad substrate tolerance, the reaction displays high selectivity for trisubstituted systems (Z/E up to 95:5). In contrast to thermal activation, directionality results from deconjugation of the π-system in the Z-isomer due to A1,3 -strain thereby inhibiting re-activation. The structural importance of the β-substituent logically prompted an investigation of mixed bis-nucleophiles (Si, Sn, B). These versatile linchpins also undergo facile isomerisation, thereby enabling a formal anti-metallometallation. Mechanistic interrogation, supported by a theoretical investigation, is disclosed together with application of the products to the stereospecific synthesis of biologically relevant target structures.

Abstract
A photochemical approach to polysubstituted heterocycles using UV-induced alkene isomerization is described. The method allows for the synthesis of disubstituted furans and pyrroles under mild and neutral conditions and also provides access to a class of trisubstituted furans pertinent to natural-product synthesis. The method has broad functional-group tolerance and many richly decorated heterocycles have been prepared incorporating functional groups that are unstable under Brønsted and Lewis acidic conditions.

Abstract
Strategies to achieve spatiotemporal regulation of pre-existing alkenes via external stimuli are essential given the ubiquity of feedstock olefins in chemistry and their downstream applications. Mirroring the 1-0 switch that underpins mammalian vision through selective geometric isomerisation in retinal, strategies to manipulate 2D space by both geometric and positional isomerisation of alkenes via chemical, thermal and light-driven processes are being intensively pursued. This minireview highlights the current state of the art in activating and achieving directionality in these fundamental chemical transformations.

Abstract
A general and straightforward protocol for di-/perfluoroalkylation of ortho-hydroxycinnamic esters via a photoredox-catalyzed cascade was developed to access a variety of 3-fluoroalkylated coumarins. This method was characterized by all-in-one synthetic design, simplified operation, mild reaction conditions, and broad substrate scope. Moreover, a sequential one-pot procedure starting from commercially available salicylaldehyde was also successfully realized to synthesize 3-fluoroalkylated coumarins.

Abstract
Herein we report a versatile Mizoroki-Heck-type photoinduced C(sp3 )-N bond cleavage reaction. Under visible-light irradiation (455 nm, blue LEDs) at room temperature, alkyl Katritzky salts react smoothly with alkenes in a 1:1 molar ratio in the presence of 1.0 mol % of commercially available photoredox catalyst without the need for any base, affording the corresponding alkyl-substituted alkenes in good yields with broad functional-group compatibility. Notably, the E/Z-selectivity of the alkene products can be controlled by an appropriate choice of photoredox catalyst.

Abstract
Non-biaryl atropisomers are valuable in medicine, materials, and catalysis, but their enantioselective synthesis remains a challenge. Herein, a counterion-mediated O-alkylation method for the generation of atropisomeric amides with an er up to 99:1 is outlined. This dynamic kinetic resolution is enabled by the observation that the rate of racemization of atropisomeric naphthamides is significantly increased by the presence of an intramolecular O-H⋅⋅⋅NCO hydrogen bond. Upon O-alkylation of the H-bond donor, the barrier to rotation is significantly increased. Quantum calculations demonstrate that the intramolecular H-bond reduces the rotational barrier about the aryl-amide bond, stabilizing the planar transition state for racemization by approximately 40 kJ mol-1 , thereby facilitating the observed dynamic kinetic resolution.

Abstract
We present herein the first visible-light-driven hydrocarboxylation as well as carbocarboxylation of alkynes using CO2 via an iridium/cobalt dual catalysis. Such transformations provide access to various pharmaceutically important heterocycles in a one-pot procedure from readily available alkynes. Coumarins, 2-quinolones, and 2-benzoxepinones were directly accessed through a one-pot alkyne hydrocarboxylation/alkene isomerization/cyclization sequence in which the Ir photocatalyst serves a dual role to promote single-electron transfer in alkyne hydrocarboxylation and energy transfer in the subsequent alkene isomerization. Moreover, an unprecedented cobalt carboxylation/acyl migration cascade enables alkyne difunctionalization to introduce γ-hydroxybutenolides with high efficiency. We expect that this cascade strategy will inspire new perspectives for alkyne and alkene difunctionalization.
