Co-Processing of Jatropha-Derived Bio-Oil with Petroleum Distillates over Mesoporous CoMo and NiMo Sulfide Catalysts

Effect of Pd Precursor Salts on the Chemical State, Particle Size, and Performance of Activated Carbon-Supported Pd Catalysts for the Selective Hydrogenation of Palm Biodiesel

To improve the oxidative stability of biodiesel fuel (BDF), the polyunsaturated fatty acid methyl esters (poly-FAME) presented in commercial palm oil-derived biodiesel fuel (palm-BDF) were selectively hydrogenated to monounsaturated fatty acid methyl esters (mono-FAME) under a mild condition (80 °C, 0.5 MPa) using activated carbon (AC)-supported Pd catalysts with a Pd loading of 1 wt.%. The partially hydrotreated palm-BDF (denoted as H-FAME) which has low poly-FAME components is a new type of BDF with enhanced quality for use in high blends. In this study, we reported that the chemical states and particle sizes of Pd in the prepared Pd/AC catalysts were significantly influenced by the Pd precursors, Pd(NO₃)₂ and Pd(NH₃)₄Cl₂, and thus varied their hydrogenation activity and product selectivity. The 1%Pd/AC (nit) catalyst, prepared using Pd(NO₃)₂, presented high performance for selective hydrogenation of poly-FAME into mono-FAME with high oxidation stability, owning to its large Pd particles (8.4 nm). Conversely, the 1%Pd/AC (amc) catalyst, prepared using Pd(NH₃)₄Cl₂, contained small Pd particles (2.7 nm) with a little Cl residues, which could be completely removed by washing with an aqueous solution of 0.1 M NH₄OH. The small Pd particles gave increased selectivity toward unwanted-FAME components, particularly the saturated fatty acid methyl esters during the hydrogenation of poly-FAME. This selectivity is unprofitable for improving the biodiesel quality.

Clean Syn-Fuels via Hydrogenation Processes: Acidity–Activity Relationship in O-Xylene Hydrotreating

Transition metal sulfide catalysts are actually the most performing catalytic materials in crude oil hydrotreating (HDT), for energetic purposes. However, these systems suffer from several drawbacks that limit their exploitation. Aiming to meet the even more stringent environmental requirement, through a remarkable improvement of HDT performance in the presence of refractory feedstock (i.e., in terms of activity, selectivity, and stability), a deeper knowledge of the structure–activity relationship of catalysts must be achieved. Therefore, in this study, CoMo/γ-Al2O3 and NiMo/γ-Al2O3 catalysts were characterized and tested in the o-xylene hydrogenation model reaction, assessing the influence of both support acidity and catalyst acid strength on reaction pathway by employing γ-Al2O3 and Y-Type zeolite as acid reference materials. A clear relationship between concentration and strength of acid sites and the performance of the catalytic materials was established. Cobalt based catalyst (CoMoSx) proves a higher acidic character with respect to Nickel (NiMoSx), prompting isomerization reactions preferentially, also reflecting a greater o-xylene conversion. The different chemical properties of metals also affect the catalytic pathway, leading on the CoMoSx system to the preferential formation of p-xylene isomer with respect to m-xylene.

Insight into the Microstructure and Deactivation Effects on Commercial NiMo/γ-Al2O3 Catalyst through Aberration-Corrected Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy

Atom-resolved microstructure variations and deactivation effects on the commercial NiMo/γ-Al2O3 catalysts were revealed by aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope (Cs-STEM) equipped with enhanced energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Structural information parallel to and vertical to the electron beam provides definitive insight toward an understanding of structure–activity relations. Under the mild to harsher reaction conditions, “fragment” structures (like metal single atoms, metal clusters, and nanoparticles) of commercial NiMo/γ-Al2O3 catalysts, gradually reduces, while MoS2 nanoslabs get longer and thinner. Such a result about active slabs leads to the reduction in the number of active sites, resulting in a significant decrease in activity. Likewise, the average atomic ratio of promoter Ni and Ni/(Mo + S) ratio of slabs decrease from 2.53% to 0.45% and from 0.0788 to 0.0326, respectively, by means of EDS under the same conditions stated above, reflecting the weakening of the promotional effect. XPS result confirms the existence of NixSy species in deactivated catalysts. This could be ascribed to the Ni segregation from active phase. Furthermore, statistical data give realistic coke behaviors associated with the active metals. With catalytic activity decreasing, the coke on the active metals regions tends to increase faster than that on the support regions. This highlights that the commercial NiMo/γ-Al2O3 catalyst during catalysis is prone to produce more coke on the active metal areas.

Hydrotreating of Jatropha-derived Bio-oil over Mesoporous Sulfide Catalysts to Produce Drop-in Transportation Fuels

The bio-oil was largely produced by thermal pyrolysis of Jatropha-derived biomass wastes (denoted as Jatropha bio-oil) using a pilot plant with a capacity of 20 kg h-1 at Thailand Institute of Scientific and Technological Research (TISTR), Thailand. Jatropha bio-oil is an unconventional type of bio-oil, which is mostly composed of fatty acids, fatty acid methyl esters, fatty acid amides, and derivatives, and consequently, it contains large amounts of heteroatoms (oxygen ~20 wt.%, nitrogen ~ 5 wt.%, sulfur ~ 1000 ppm.). The heteroatoms, especially nitrogen, are highly poisonous to the metal or sulfide catalysts for upgrading of Jatropha bio-oil. To overcome this technical problem, we reported a stepwise strategy for hydrotreating of 100 wt.% Jatropha bio-oil over mesoporous sulfide catalysts (CoMo/γ-Al2O3 and NiMo/γ-Al2O3) to produce drop-in transport fuels, such as gasoline- and diesel-like fuels. This study is very different from our recent work on co-processing of Jatropha bio-oil (ca. 10 wt.%) with petroleum distillates to produce a hydrotreated oil as a diesel-like fuel. Jatropha bio-oil was pre-treated through a slurry-type high-pressure reactor under severe conditions, resulting in a pre-treated Jatropha bio-oil with relatively low amounts of heteroatoms (oxygen < 20 wt.%, nitrogen < 2 wt.%, sulfur < 500 ppm.). The light and middle distillates of pre-hydrotreated Jatropha bio-oil were then separated by distillation at a temperature below 240 °C, and a temperature of 240–360 °C. Deep hydrotreating of light distillates over sulfide CoMo/γ-Al2O3 catalyst was performed on a batch-type high-pressure reactor at 350 °C and 7 MPa of H2 gas for 5 h. The hydrotreated oil was a gasoline-like fuel, which contained 29.5 vol.% of n-paraffins, 14.4 vol.% of iso-paraffins, 4.5 vol.% of olefins, 21.4 vol.% of naphthene compounds and 29.6 wt.% of aromatic compounds, and little amounts of heteroatoms (nearly no oxygen and sulfur, and less than 50 ppm of nitrogen), corresponding to an octane number of 44, and it would be suitable for blending with petro-gasoline. The hydrotreating of middle distillates over sulfide NiMo/γ-Al2O3 catalyst using the same reaction condition produced a hydrotreating oil with diesel-like composition, low amounts of heteroatoms (no oxygen and less than 50 ppm of sulfur and nitrogen), and a cetane number of 60, which would be suitable for use in drop-in diesel fuel.

Developing Nickel–Zirconia Co-Precipitated Catalysts for Production of Green Diesel

The transformation of sunflower oil (SO) and waste cooking oil (WCO) into green diesel over co-precipitated nickel–zirconia catalysts was studied. Two series of catalysts were prepared. The first series included catalysts with various Ni loadings prepared using zirconium oxy-chloride, whereas the second series included catalysts with 60–80 wt % Ni loading prepared using zirconium oxy-nitrate as zirconium source. The catalysts were characterized and evaluated in the transformation of SO into green diesel. The best catalysts were also evaluated for green diesel production using waste cooking oil. The catalysts performance for green diesel production is mainly governed by the Ni surface exposed, their acidity, and the reducibility of the ZrO2. These characteristics depend on the preparation method and the Zr salt used. The presence of chlorine in the catalysts drawn from the zirconium oxy-chloride results to catalysts with relatively low Ni surface, high acidity and hardly reduced ZrO2 phase. These characteristics lead to relatively low activity for green diesel production, whereas they favor high yields of wax esters. Ni-ZrO2 catalysts with Ni loading in the range 60–80 wt %, prepared by urea hydrothermal co-precipitation method using zirconium oxy-nitrate as ZrO2 precursor salt exhibited higher Ni surface, moderate acidity, and higher reducibility of ZrO2 phase. The latter catalysts were proved to be very promising for green diesel production.
