The Development of Metal-Free Porous Organic Polymers for Sustainable Carbon Dioxide Photoreduction

A viable tactic to effectively address the climate crisis is the production of renewable fuels via photocatalytic reactions using solar energy and available resources like carbon dioxide (CO2) and water. Organic polymer material-based photocatalytic materials are thought to be one way to convert solar energy into valuable chemicals and other solar fuels. The use of porous organic polymers (POPs) for CO2 fixation and capture and sequestration to produce beneficial compounds to reduce global warming is still receiving a lot of interest. Visible light-responsive organic photopolymers that are functionally designed and include a large number of heteroatoms and an extended π-conjugation allow for the generation of photogenerated charge carriers, improved absorption of visible light, increased charge separation, and decreased charge recombination during photocatalysis. Due to their rigid structure, high surface area, flexible pore size, permanent porosity, and adaptability of the backbone for the intended purpose, POPs have drawn more and more attention. These qualities have been shown to be highly advantageous for numerous sustainable applications. POPs may be broadly categorized as crystalline or amorphous according to how much long-range order they possess. In terms of performance, conducting POPs outperform inorganic semiconductors and typical organic dyes. They are light-harvesting materials with remarkable optical characteristics, photostability, cheap cost, and low cytotoxicity. Through cocatalyst loading and morphological tweaking, this review presents optimization options for POPs preparation techniques. We provide an analysis of the ways in which the preparative techniques will affect the materials' physicochemical characteristics and, consequently, their catalytic activity. An inventory of experimental methods is provided for characterizing POPs' optical, morphological, electrochemical, and catalytic characteristics. The focus of this review is to thoroughly investigate the photochemistry of these polymeric organic photocatalysts with an emphasis on understanding the processes of internal charge generation and transport within POPs. The review covers several types of amorphous POP materials, including those based on conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs), inherent microporosity polymers, hyper-crosslinked polymers, and porous aromatic frameworks. Additionally, common synthetic approaches for these materials are briefly discussed.

An Overview of Heterogeneous Catalysts Based on Hypercrosslinked Polystyrene for the Synthesis and Transformation of Platform Chemicals Derived from Biomass

Platform chemicals, also known as chemical building blocks, are substances that serve as starting materials for the synthesis of various value-added products, which find a wide range of applications. These chemicals are the key ingredients for many fine and specialty chemicals. Most of the transformations of platform chemicals are catalytic processes, which should meet the requirements of sustainable chemistry: to be not toxic for humans, to be safe for the environment, and to allow multiple reuses of catalytic materials. This paper presents an overview of a new class of heterogeneous catalysts based on nanoparticles of catalytically active metals stabilized by a polymer matrix of hypercrosslinked polystyrene (HPS). This polymeric support is characterized by hierarchical porosity (including meso- and macropores along with micropores), which is important both for the formation of metal nanoparticles and for efficient mass transfer of reactants. The influence of key parameters such as the morphology of nanoparticles (bimetallic versus monometallic) and the presence of functional groups in the polymer matrix on the catalytic properties is considered. Emphasis is placed on the use of this class of heterogeneous catalysts for the conversion of plant polysaccharides into polyols (sorbitol, mannitol, and glycols), hydrogenation of levulinic acid, furfural, oxidation of disaccharides, and some other reactions that might be useful for large-scale industrial processes that aim to be sustainable. Some challenges related to the use of HPS-based catalysts are addressed and multiple perspectives are discussed.

An efficient CuO/rGO/TiO2 photocatalyst for the synthesis of benzopyranopyrimidine compounds under visible light irradiation

This study reports the synthesis of CuO/rGO/TiO2 in coupling reaction under visible light irradiation. Its photocatalytic performance was explored in a pseudo 4-component and a domino reaction for the synthesis of benzopyranopyrimidine compounds. It can be recovered and recycled for 5 runs.

Metal–organic framework (MOF)-, covalent-organic framework (COF)-, and porous-organic polymers (POP)-catalyzed selective C–H bond activation and functionalization reactions

The review summarizes the state-of-the-art of C–H active transformations over crystalline and amorphous porous materials as new emerging heterogeneous (photo)catalysts.

Polymer Beads Decorated with Dendritic Systems as Supports for A3 Coupling Catalysts

Abstract

The gel type microscopic polymer beads bearing epoxy functionalities were modified using the two-stage procedures in order to decorate their surface with the moieties of the zeroth order PAMAM type dendrimer and different heterocyclic aldehydes (2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde, 2-pyrrolidinecarboxaldehyde, furfural or 2-thiophenecarboxaldehyde). The polymeric supports provided in this manner were then used for the immobilization of copper(II) ions. The resulting materials were characterized using different instrumental techniques (optical microscopy, SEM, FTIR microscopy, DR UV–Vis, ICP-OES, and thermal analysis). They were also used as catalysts in the model A3 coupling reaction of benzaldehyde, morpholine and phenylacetylene. The best catalytic activity was found for the polymeric catalyst bearing 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde moieties. It turned out to be effective in the A3 coupling reactions included different benzaldehyde, alkyne, and secondary amine derivatives, as well. It could also be recycled several times without a significant decrease in its activity in the model A3 coupling reaction.

Bismuth as Smart Material and Its Application in the Ninth Principle of Sustainable Chemistry

This paper reports an overview of Green Chemistry and the concept of its twelve principles. This study focusses on the ninth principle of Green Chemistry, that is, catalysis. A report on catalysis, in line with its definition, background, classification, properties, and applications, is provided. The study also entails a green element called bismuth. Bismuth’s low toxicity and low cost have made researchers focus on its wide applications in catalysis. It exhibits smartness in all the catalytic activities with the highest catalytic performance among other metals.

Nickel-metalated porous organic polymer for Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction

A new Ni(ii)-α-diimine-based porous organic polymer, namely Ni(ii)-α-diimine-POP, was constructed in high yield via the Sonogashira coupling reaction between the metallo-building block of Ni(ii)-α-diimine and 1,3,5-triethynylbenzene. Besides the high thermal and chemical stability, the obtained Ni(ii)-α-diimine-POP can be a highly active reusable heterogeneous catalyst to promote the Suzuki–Miyaura coupling reaction. The obtained results indicate that the Ni(ii)-α-diimine-POP herein is a promising sustainable alternative to the Pd-based catalysts for catalysing the C–C formation in a heterogeneous way.
