Microcystis aeruginosa Synergistically Facilitate the Photocatalytic Degradation of Tetracycline Hydrochloride and Cr(VI) on PAN/TiO2/Ag Nanofiber Mats

Self-Assembled Nanostructure of Ionic Sn(IV)porphyrin Complex Based on Multivalent Interactions for Photocatalytic Degradation of Water Contaminants

[Sn(H2PO4)2(TPyHP)](H2PO4)4∙6H2O (2), an ionic tin porphyrin complex, was synthesized from the reaction of [Sn(OH)2TPyP] (1) with a dilute aqueous solution of a polyprotic acid (H3PO4). Complex 2 was fully characterized using various spectroscopic methods, such as X-ray single-crystal crystallography, 1H NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, FTIR spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, emission spectroscopy, EIS mass spectrometry, PXRD, and TGA analysis. The crystal structure of 2 reveals that the intermolecular hydrogen bonds between the peripheral pyridinium groups and the axially coordinated dihydrogen phosphate ligands are the main driving force for the supramolecular assembly. Simultaneously, the overall association of these chains in 2 leads to an open framework with porous channels. The photocatalytic degradation efficiency of methyl orange dye and tetracycline antibiotic by 2 was 83% within 75 min (rate constant = 0.023 min-1) and 75% within 60 min (rate constant = 0.018 min-1), respectively. The self-assembly of 2 resulted in a nanostructure with a huge surface area, elevated thermodynamic stability, interesting surface morphology, and excellent catalytic photodegradation performance for water pollutants, making these porphyrin-based photocatalytic systems promising for wastewater treatment.

Oxygen micro-nanobubbles for mitigating eutrophication induced sediment pollution in freshwater bodies

Sediment hypoxia is a growing problem and has negative ecological impacts on the aquatic ecosystem. Hypoxia can disturb the biodiversity and biogeochemical cycles of both phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) in water columns and sediments. Anthropogenic eutrophication and internal nutrient release from lakebed sediment accelerate hypoxia to form a dead zone. Thus, sediment hypoxia mitigation is necessary for ecological restoration and sustainable development. Conventional aeration practices to control sediment hypoxia, are not effective due to high cost, sediment disturbance and less sustainability. Owing to high solubility and stability, micro-nanobubbles (MNBs) offer several advantages over conventional water and wastewater treatment practices. Clay loaded oxygen micro-nanobubbles (OMNBs) can be delivered into deep water sediment by gravity and settling. Nanobubble technology provides a promising route for cost-effective oxygen delivery in large natural water systems. OMNBs also have the immense potential to manipulate biochemical pathways and microbial processes for remediating sediment pollution in natural waters. This review article aims to analyze recent trends employing OMNBs loaded materials to mitigate sediment hypoxia and subsequent pollution. The first part of the review highlights various minerals/materials used for the delivery of OMNBs into benthic sediments of freshwater bodies. Release of OMNBs at hypoxic sediment water interphase (SWI) can provide significant dissolved oxygen (DO) to remediate hypoxia induced sediment pollution Second part of the manuscript unveils the impacts of OMNBs on sediment pollutants (e.g., methylmercury, arsenic, and greenhouse gases) remediation and microbial processes for improved biogeochemical cycles. The review article will facilitate environmental engineers and ecologists to control sediment pollution along with ecological restoration.

Anaerobic Digested Wastewater CO2 Sequestration Using a Biophotocatalytic System with a Magnetized Photocatalyst (Fe-TiO2)

This study presents a biophotocatalytic system as a sustainable technology for the recovery of clean water and renewable energy from wastewater, thereby providing a unique opportunity to drive industrialization and global sustainable development throughputs. Herein, inhouse magnetized photocatalyst (Fe-TiO₂) with surface area 62.73 m²/g synthesized via co-precipitation, was hypothesized to hasten an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor for the treatment of local South Africa municipality wastewater with the benefit of high-quality biogas production. A lab scale UASB process with a working volume of 5 L coupled with two UV-lights (T8 blacklight-blue tube, 365 nm, 18 W) was operated batchwise under mesophilic conditions for the period of 30 days with a constant organic load charge of 2.76 kg COD/m³. d. This biophotocatalytic system performance was investigated and compared with and without the Fe-TiO₂ charge (2–6 g) with respect to effluent quality, biogas production and CO₂ methanation. Using chemical oxygen demand (COD) measured as the degree of degradation of the pollutants, the best efficiency of 93% COD removal was achieved by a 4 g Fe-TiO₂ charge at 14 days and pH of 7.13, as compared to zero charge where only 49.6% degradation was achieved. Under the same charge, cumulative biogas and methane content of 1500 mL/g COD.d and 85% were respectively attained as compared with the control with 400 mL/g COD.d and 65% methane content. Also, the energy produced can be used to offset the energy utilized by the UV-light for the wastewater abatement and other limitations of photocatalysis. The BP system was found to be an eco-friendly and cost-effective technology to be explored in water treatment settings.

Complete photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline by carbon doped TiO2 supported with stable metal nitrate hydroxide

Visible light-driven carbon-doped TiO₂ supported with metal nitrate hydroxide (CT-Ni/Co/Cu) nanocomposites were prepared and characterized by various studies. It is fascinating to note that particle size of TiO₂ was substantially reduced from 5 μm to 50 nm after doping of carbon which was confirmed by FESEM. Moreover, the incorporation of stable metal (Cu) nitrate hydroxide further enhanced the visible light absorption up to 800 nm as evident by UV-DRS. The carbon doping and copper nitrate formation are validated by the Ti-O-C and N-O bonds using XPS and FTIR spectra. The photocatalytic activity of as-prepared photocatalyst was tested for the tetracycline degradation (TC, 10 mg/mL) under light irradiation. Significantly, 3 wt% carbon-doped TiO₂ (31CT) with Cu (II) hydroxide nitrate nanocomposite photocatalyst exhibited an excellent photocatalytic activity (97%, within 1 h), and the corresponding reaction rate was around 2 times higher than bare TiO₂. The excellent photocatalytic activity of 31CT-Cu nanocomposite was due to enhanced adsorbent of TC via carbon doping, visible light absorption, improved photo-generated carrier separation and migration by metal nitrate hydroxide as a support. This work may promote the development of a new carbon-doped TiO₂ supported with highly stable metal nitrate hydroxide nanocomposite by facile method and used as an efficient photocatalyst for photodegradation of environmental pollutants.

Dye-sensitized Photocatalyst of Sepiolite for Organic Dye Degradation

The photocatalytic activity of sepiolite was examined for degradation of several dye compounds under visible light irradiation. Higher adsorption capacities and greater photocatalytic performance of cationic dyes (rhodamine B and methylene blue) were observed on sepiolite, in comparison with anionic dyes (orange II and trypan blue). Superiority in the photocatalytic activity of cationic dyes is attributed to the strong electrostatic attraction and photosensitization properties of cationic dye molecules. Sepiolite has degraded 45.3% rhodamine B within 120 min, which is the greatest photocatalytic degradation efficiency when compared with other dyes. Subsequently, the reusability of spent sepiolite after adsorption of rhodamine B was evaluated by the degradation of trypan blue under the visible light irradiation. The photocatalytic degradation performance of trypan blue by spent sepiolite after adsorption of rhodamine B increased about twice as much as with pristine sepiolite, indicating that the dye-sensitized photocatalytic process could enhance the photocatalytic degradation ability of sepiolite. Through radical scavenger tests, it was found that a superoxide radical is mainly responsible for rhodamine B degradation. The possible mechanism of rhodamine B degradation under visible light irradiation was proposed. The sepiolite could be a potential catalyst for the degradation of organic pollutants in wastewater under solar light.

Revisiting the mechanistic pathways for bacterial mediated synthesis of noble metal nanoparticles

Synthesis and application of reliable nanoscale materials is a progressive domain and the limelight of modern nanotechnology. Conventional physicochemical approaches for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles have become obsolete owing to costly and hazardous materials. There is a need to explore alternative, cost-effective and eco-friendly strategies for fabrication of nanoparticle (NPs). Green synthesis of noble metal nanoparticles has emerged as a promising approach in the last decade. Elucidation of the molecular mechanism is highly essential in the biological synthesis of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) for the controlled size, shape, and monodispersity. Moreover, mechanistic insights will help to scale up the facile synthesis protocols and will enable biotransformation of toxic heavy metals hence also providing the detoxification effects. Therefore, the current review article has primarily targeted the mechanisms involved in the green synthesis of metal NPs, which have been reported during the last few years. Detailed mechanistic pathways have highlighted nitrate reductase as a principle reducing agent in the bacterial mediated synthesis and stabilization of NPs. Furthermore, we have highlighted the potential implications of these mechanisms in bioremediation and biomineralization processes, which can play a critical role in biogeochemical cycling and environmental impacts of heavy metals. We anticipate that this review article will help researchers to address the challenges of bioremediation and modern nanotechnology.
