Abstract
NNN-Bis(imino) pyridine-based pincer-Fe(II) complexes with an expected trigonal bipyramidal (TBP) geometry equilibrated to a rearranged ion pair of an octahedral dicationic Fe complex containing two bis(imino)pyridine ligands that are neutralized by a tetrahedral dianionic-[FeCl4]2-. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), and UV-visible (UV-vis) studies suggested that the equilibrium was dictated by the sterics of the R group on the imine N, with the less-crowded groups tilting the equilibrium to the ion pair and the bulky ones favoring the TBP geometry. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and Evan's magnetic moment measurements indicated that the complexes were paramagnetic with Fe(II) in a high-spin state. In solution, over a period of 7 days, these Fe(II) complexes oxidized to a mixture of low-spin and high-spin Fe(III) species. These pincer-Fe(II) were found to be highly active toward the transformation of biodiesel waste glycerol to value-added lactic acid (LA). Particularly, (Ph2NNN)FeCl2 (0.1 mol %) gave 91% LA with a 99% selectivity at 140 °C using 1.2 equiv of NaOH. With 0.0001 mol % (Ph2NNN)FeCl2, very high turnovers (74% LA, 98% selectivity, 740 000 turnover number (TON) at 4405 turnovers per hour (TOs/h)) were obtained after 7 days. EPR indicated Fe(III) species to be the active catalyst, a few of which were detected by HRMS. Experiments with Hg are suggestive of the mostly homogeneous molecular nature of the catalyst with a minor contribution from heterogeneous Fe nanoparticles.

Abstract
The dehydrogenation of glycerol to lactic acid (LA) under both acceptorless and transfer dehydrogenation conditions using readily available, inexpensive, environmentally benign and earth-abundant base metal salt CoCl2 is reported here. The CoCl2 (0.5 mol %) catalyzed acceptorless dehydrogenation of glycerol at 160 °C in the presence of 0.75 equiv. of KOH, gave up to 33 % yield of LA in 44 % selectivity apart from hydrogen. Alternatively, with acetone as a sacrificial hydrogen acceptor, the CoCl2 (0.5 mol %) catalyzed dehydrogenation of glycerol at 160 °C in the presence of 1.1 equiv. of NaOt Bu resulted in up to 93 % LA with 96 % selectivity along with another value-added product isopropanol. Labelling studies revealed a modest secondary KIE of 1.68 which points to the involvement of C-H bond activation as a part of the catalytic cycle but not as a part of the rate-determining step. Catalyst poisoning experiments with PPh3 and CS2 are indicative of the homogeneous nature of the reaction mixture involving molecular species that are likely to be in-situ formed octahedral Co(II) as inferred from EPR, HRMS and Evans magnetic moment studies. The net transfer dehydrogenation activity is attributed to exclusive contribution from the alcoholysis step.

Abstract
The depletion of fossil resources is driving the research towards alternative renewable ones. Under this perspective, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) represents a key molecule deriving from biomass characterized by remarkable potential as platform chemical. In this work, for the first time, the hydrogenation of HMF in ethanol was selectively addressed towards 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF) or 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)tetrahydrofuran (BHMTHF) by properly tuning the reaction conditions in the presence of the same commercial catalyst (Ru/C), reaching the highest yields of 80 and 93 mol%, respectively. These diols represent not only interesting monomers but strategic precursors for two scarcely investigated ethoxylated biofuels, 2,5-bis(ethoxymethyl)furan (BEMF) and 2,5-bis(ethoxymethyl)tetrahydrofuran (BEMTHF). Therefore, the etherification with ethanol of pure BHMF and BHMTHF and of crude BHMF, as obtained from hydrogenation step, substrates scarcely investigated in the literature, was performed with several commercial heterogeneous acid catalysts. Among them, the zeolite HZSM-5 (Si/Al=25) was the most promising system, achieving the highest BEMF yield of 74 mol%. In particular, for the first time, the synthesis of the fully hydrogenated diether BEMTHF was thoroughly studied, and a novel cascade process for the tailored conversion of HMF to the diethyl ethers BEMF and BEMTHF was proposed.

Abstract
The production of methyl lactate as a degradable polymer monomer from biomass was an important topic for a sustainable society. In this manuscript, glycerol was oxidated to methyl lactate catalyzed by the combination of Au-CuO and Sn-Beta. The influence of Sn content, Sn source, and the preparation conditions for Sn-β was studied. The Au content in Au/CuO was also investigated by varying the Au content in Au/CuO. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, FTIR spectroscopy of pyridine adsorption, and TEM to study the role of Sn and the influence of different parameters for catalyst preparation. After the optimization of reaction parameters, the yield of methyl lactate from glycerol reached 59% at 363 K after reacting in 1.6 MPa of O2 for 6 h.

Abstract
The crude glycerol is produced during the transesterification of animal fats and vegetable oils, but it is a by-product of this process. Currently, its elimination is a problem in the chemical industry. The main goal of this work was the preparation, characterization and application of mesoporous cerium-zirconium oxide as supports for copper and gold species and the comparison of selected factors on the properties of catalysts in glycerol oxidation in the liquid phase. The samples were characterized using adsorption and desorption of nitrogen, XRD, UV-vis, XPS, TEM, SEM, and STEM-EDXS. The obtained results of glycerol oxidation show that the bimetallic copper-gold catalysts are more active and selective to glyceric acid in this reaction than analogous monometallic gold catalysts. Additionally, bimetallic catalysts are also characterized by the catalytic stability, and their application leads to the increase of selectivity to glyceric acid during their reusing in glycerol oxidation in alkali media. In this work, the influence of selected factors, e.g., oxygen source and its pressure, solution pH, and base content on the catalytic activity of bimetallic catalysts is discussed.

Abstract
The production of lactic acid (LA) from glycerol in alkaline medium was investigated using Cu catalysts supported on CaO, MgO and xCaO/MgO (x = 5, 10, 15 wt%), employing a continuous flow reaction system over a period of 30 h. In addition to assessing the effect of the composition of the catalytic support, the influence of the temperature (200-260 °C), NaOH/glycerol molar ratio (0.5-1.5), hydroxide type (NaOH and KOH), as well as the influence of concentration (10 and 20 vol%) and purity of glycerol was investigated. The catalysts were prepared by a wet impregnation method and characterized by XRF, XRD, N2 adsorption-desorption, H2-TPR and CO2-TPD. The catalytic tests showed that the use of NaOH results in higher yields to LA. Cu catalysts supported on xCaO/MgO exhibited better catalytic performance than the CuCa and CuMg catalysts. The LA yield increases with the increase of the reaction temperature from 200 to 240 °C, and then decreases with a subsequent increase to 260 °C. NaOH/glycerol molar ratios greater than 1.25 are not necessary, since high yield to LA (96.9%) was obtained in the catalytic test performed using a molar ratio of 1.25. The catalysts showed excellent stability without evidence of deactivation over the evaluated period.
