Abstract
In the present study, we have synthesized a zinc sulfide/chitosan (ZS/CS) nanocomposite by utilizing simple, economical, and environmentally friendly methods. The synthesized nanomaterials were characterized by different analytical techniques such as XRD, FE-SEM, EDS, and FTIR to determine the phase structure, morphology, and elemental composition. FTIR spectroscopy was used to confirm the functional groups of the synthesized zinc sulfide (ZS) nanoparticles and ZS/CS composite. Besides, the optical properties of the as-synthesized nanocomposite was analyzed by a UV-visible spectrophotometer, and the estimated band gap energy is ∼3.03 eV. The photocatalytic efficiency of the synthesized ZS/CS nanocomposite was investigated against two textile dyes, Crystal Violet (CV) and Acid Red-I (AR-I), under UV-visible light irradiation. The nanocomposite showed excellent photocatalytic activity against the dyes, and photodegradation was estimated to be about 93.44 and 90.67% for CV and AR-I, respectively. The nanocomposite was reused for three consecutive cycles. The results revealed that the photocatalyst displayed good reusability during the photocatalytic decomposition and thus is considered a cost-effective and promising photocatalyst in degrading dye pollutants. The kinetic study proved that the pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics was followed by the degradation process. We also examined the anticancer activity of ZS and ZS/CS against human breast and myelogenous leukemia cancer cell lines, namely, MCF-7 and K-562, and the half minimal inhibitory concentrations were found to be less than 50 μg/mL.

Abstract
Access to clean drinking water is a basic requirement, and eliminating pollutants from wastewater is important for saving water ecosystems. The porous structure and surface characteristics of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can function as a perfect scaffold for removing toxic compounds from wastewater. Porphyrins are promising building blocks for constructing MOFs. Porphyrin-based metal-organic frameworks (P-MOFs) have been fabricated using porphyrin ligands, metal clusters, or ions. These materials can harvest light from a wide region of the solar spectrum, and their framework morphology and physicochemical properties can be controlled by changing their peripheral subunits or metal ions. These porous crystalline materials have generated interest because of their distinctive characteristics, including large permanent porosity, interesting surface morphology, broad conformational diversity, high photostability, and semiconducting nature. This article discusses the recent progress and usefulness of P-MOFs. The fabrication procedures of P-MOFs are discussed, followed by the adsorptive and photocatalytic removal of contaminants from wastewater. The relationships between the geometries of P-MOFs and their light-harvesting and charge-transfer mechanisms for the photocatalytic degradation of pollutants are highlighted. Finally, some future perspectives and obstacles in the photodegradation usage of P-MOFs are discussed, along with feasible research directions to standardize efficient photocatalysts for improved photodegradation for water treatment.

Abstract
Dye wastewater possess immense toxicity with carcinogenic properties and they persist in environment owing to their stability and resistance to chemical and photochemical changes. The bio degradability of dye-contaminated wastewater is low due to its complex molecular structure. Nano-photocatalysts based on zinc oxide are reported as one of the effective metal oxides for dye remediation due to their photostability, enhanced UV and visible absorption capabilities in an affordable manner. An electron-hole pair forms when electrons in the valence band of ZnO nano-photocatalyst transfer into the conduction band by absorbing UV light. The review article presents a detailed review on ZnO applications for treating acidic and basic dyes along with the dye degradation performance based on operating conditions and photocatalytic kinetic models. Several acidic and basic dyes have been shown to degrade efficiently using ZnO and its nanocomposites. Higher removal percentages for crystal violet was reported at pH 12 by ZnO/Graphene oxide catalyst under 400 nm UV light, whereas acidic dye Rhodamine B at a pH of 5.8 was degraded to 100% by pristine ZnO. The mechanism of action of ZnO nanocatalysts in degrading the dye contamination are reported and the research gaps to make these agents in environmental remediation on real time operations are discussed.

Abstract
Self-organized, well-defined porphyrin-based nanostructures with controllable sizes and morphologies are in high demand for the photodegradation of hazardous contaminants under sunlight. From this perspective, this review summarizes the development progress in the fabrication of porphyrin-based nanostructures by changing their synthetic strategies and designs. Porphyrin-based nanostructures can be fabricated using several methods, including ionic self-assembly, metal-ligand coordination, reprecipitation, and surfactant-assisted methods. The synthetic utility of porphyrins permits the organization of porphyrin building blocks into nanostructures, which can remarkably improve their light-harvesting properties and photostability. The tunable functionalization and distinctive structures of porphyrin nanomaterials trigger the junction of the charge-transfer mechanism and facilitate the photodegradation of pollutant dyes. Finally, porphyrin nanomaterials or porphyrin/metal nanohybrids are explored to amplify their photocatalytic efficiency.

Abstract
In this work, a novel copper nano-magnetite doped carbon aerogel (CXMCA) was created utilizing a simple graft co-polymerization approach with xanthan gum (XG) as a template to tackle the agglomeration problem caused by magnetic nanoparticle magnetism. The results indicated that the XG based CXMCA exhibited outstanding magnetic properties (Ms = 36.52 emu/g) as well as strong catalytic activity for the degradation of cationic and anionic dyes. Among all organic dyes, methylene blue and crystal violet (MB, CV) as cationic dyes, as well as congo red and methyl orange (CR, and MO) as anionic dyes, CXMCA demonstrated an exceptional dye degradation rate (8.06 × 10-3 s-1-1.12 × 10-2 s-1) and was highly competent for cationic dyes with degradation (90 %-98 %) as compared to its unsupported magnetic nanoparticles. The formation of CXMCA catalyst is clearly confirmed by the FTIR, XRD, XPS, VSM, SEM & TEM analyses. We report a very effective xanthan gum-based copper nano-magnetite doped carbon aerogel dye scavenger with application in percentage dye degradation and kinetic investigations, as well as a remarkable reusability assay up to 7 repetition cycles. The findings suggested that using biological macromolecules like xanthan gum as a foundation to generate magnetic aerogels might be a good choice for evaluating environmental aspects.

Abstract
In this study, bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) of silver (Ag) and zinc oxide (ZnO) were synthesized using Leptadenia pyrotechnica leaf extract for the first time. Monometallic NPs were also obtained for comparison. The characterization of the prepared NPs was carried out using various techniques, including UV-Visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The latter confirmed the crystalline nature and diameter of the monometallic and bimetallic NPs of Ag and ZnO. The SEM images of the prepared NPs revealed their different shapes. The biological activities of the NPs were evaluated concerning their antibacterial, antioxidant, and cytotoxic properties. The antibacterial activities were measured using the time-killing method. The results demonstrated that both the monometallic and bimetallic NPs inhibited the growth of Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) bacteria. The antioxidant activities of the NPs were evaluated using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) assay and their cytotoxicity was checked using the MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay. The results indicated that the controlled quantity of the monometallic and bimetallic NPs did not affect the viability of the cells. However, the decreased cell (L-929) viability suggested that the NPs could have anticancer properties. Furthermore, the photocatalytic degradation of methyl violet and 4-nitrophenol was investigated using the prepared Ag/ZnO NPs, examining the factors affecting the degradation process and conducting a kinetic and thermodynamic study. The prepared Ag/ZnO NPs demonstrated good photocatalytic degradation (88.9%) of the methyl violet (rate constant of 0.0183 min-1) in comparison to 4-nitrophenol (NPh), with a degradation rate of 81.37% and 0.0172 min-1, respectively. Overall, the bimetallic NPs showed superior antibacterial, antioxidant, cytotoxic, and photocatalytic properties compared to the monometallic NPs of Ag and ZnO.

Abstract
A reverse-micelle sol-gel method was chosen for the preparation of Fe-doped TiO2 samples that were employed in the photodegradation of the crystal violet dye under visible light irradiation in a batch reactor. The dopant amount was varied to assess the optimal photocatalyst composition towards the target dye degradation. The photocatalysts were characterized through a multi-technique approach, envisaging XRPD and QPA as obtained by Rietveld refinement, FE-SEM analysis, DR UV-vis spectroscopy, N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms measurement at -196 °C, ζ-potential measurement, and XPS analysis. The physical-chemical characterization showed that the adopted synthesis method allows obtaining NPs with uniform shape and size and promotes the introduction of Fe into the titania matrix, finally affecting the relative amounts of the three occurring polymorphs of TiO2 (anatase, rutile and brookite). By increasing the Fe content, the band gap energy decreases from 3.13 eV (with undoped TiO2) to 2.65 eV (with both 2.5 and 3.5 wt.% nominal Fe contents). At higher Fe content, surface Fe oxo-hydroxide species occur, as shown by DR UV-vis and XP spectroscopies. All the Fe-doped TiO2 photocatalysts were active in the degradation and mineralization of the target dye, showing a TOC removal higher than the undoped sample. The photoactivity under visible light was ascribed both to the band-gap reduction (as confirmed by phenol photodegradation) and to dye sensitization of the photocatalyst surface (as confirmed by photocatalytic tests carried out using different visible-emission spectra LEDs). The main reactive species involved in the dye degradation were determined to be positive holes.

Abstract
Zinc oxide nanorods were grown on an aluminum-doped zinc oxide seeds layer using the chemical bath deposition method. The effects of growth reaction time on the structural, optical, and photocatalytic properties of zinc oxide nanorods were investigated. It was clearly observed that the growth direction of zinc oxide nanorods were dependent on the crystallinity of the as-deposited aluminum-doped zinc oxide seed layer. The crystallinity of the obtained zinc oxide nanorods was improved with the increase in reaction times during the chemical bath deposition process. The mechanism of zinc oxide nanorod growth revealed that the growth rate of nanorods was influenced by the reaction times. With increasing reaction times, there were much more formed zinc oxide crystalline stacked growth along the c-axis orientation resulting in an increase in the length of nanorods. The longest nanorods and the high crystallinity were obtained from the zinc oxide nanorods grown within 5 h. The optical transmittance of all zinc oxide nanorods was greater than 70% in the visible region. Zinc oxide nanorods grown for 5 h showed the highest degradation efficiency of methyl red under ultraviolet light and had a high first-order degradation rate of 0.0051 min-1. The photocatalytic mechanism was revealed as well.

Abstract
The dry reforming of methane to syngas (DRM) is of increasing significance concerning, first, the production of raw materials for commercial organic/petrochemical syntheses and for hydrogen energetic, and, second, the utilization of two most harmful greenhouse gases. Herein, new SmCoO3-based DRM catalysts derived from heterometallic precursors and operated without preliminary reduction are reported. For the first time, the effect of supercritical fluids-assisted modification of the SmCoO3-derived catalysts combined with the re-oxidation of spent catalysts to SmCoO3 onto its long-term performance was studied. In particular, the modification of heterometallic precursors by supercritical antisolvent precipitation (SAS) considerably decreases coke formation upon the exploitation of the derived SmCoO3 sample. Moreover, the re-oxidation of the corresponding spent catalysts followed by pre-heating under N2 affords catalysts that stably provide syngas yields of 88-95% for at least 41 h at 900 °C. The achieved yields are among the highest ones currently reported for DRM catalysts derived from both LnMO3 perovskites and related oxides. The origins of such good performance are discussed. Given the simplicity and availability of all the applied methods and chemicals, this result opens prospects for exploiting SAS in the design of efficient DRM catalysts.

Abstract
Mixed Ni-Al oxide catalytic precursors with different elemental ratios (20, 50, and 80 wt.% Ni0) were synthesized using green supercritical antisolvent co-precipitation (SAS). The obtained oxide precursors and metal catalysts were characterized in detail by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis, CO adsorption, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). It was found that the composition and structure of the Ni-Al precursors are related to the Ni content. The mixed Ni1−xAlxO oxide with NiO-based crystal structure was formed in the Ni-enriched sample, whereas the highly dispersed NiAl2O4 spinel was observed in the Al-enriched sample. The obtained metal catalysts were tested in the process of anisole H2-free hydrogenation. 2-PrOH was used as a hydrogen donor. The catalyst with 50 wt.% Ni0 demonstrated the highest activity in the hydrogenation process.

Abstract
In the Supercritical Antisolvent process (SAS), the thermodynamic behavior of complex multicomponent systems can influence the particles’ morphology. However, due to the limited thermodynamic data for multicomponent systems, the effect of solutes is often neglected, and the system is considered as pseudo-binary. It has been demonstrated that the presence of a solute can significantly influence the thermodynamic behavior of the system. In particular, when the SAS process is adopted for the production of drug/polymer coprecipitated microparticles, the effect of both the drug and the polymer in the solvent/CO2 mixture should be considered. In this work, the effect of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), used as the carrier, and of the liposoluble vitamins menadione (MEN) and α-tocopherol (TOC), as model drugs, was investigated as a deviation from the fundamental thermodynamic behavior of the DMSO/CO2 binary system. Vapor–liquid equilibria (VLE) were evaluated at 313 K, with a PVP concentration in the organic solution equal to 20 mg/mL. The effect of the presence of PVP, MEN, and TOC on DMSO/CO2 VLE at 313 K was studied; furthermore, the effect of PVP/MEN and PVP/TOC, at a polymer/drug ratio of 5/1 and 3/1, was determined. Moreover, SAS precipitation experiments were performed at the same polymer/drug ratios using a pressure of 90 bar. Thermodynamic studies revealed significant changes in phase behavior for DMSO/CO2/PVP/TOC and DMSO/CO2/PVP/MEN systems compared to the binary DMSO/CO2 system. From the analysis of the effect of the presence of a single compound on the binary system VLE, it was noted that PVP slightly affected the thermodynamic behavior of the system. In contrast, these effects were more evident for the DMSO/CO2/TOC and DMSO/CO2/MEN systems. SAS precipitation experiments produced PVP/MEN and PVP/TOC microparticles, and the obtained morphology was justified considering the quaternary systems VLE.

Abstract
Nanoparticles are widely used in the pharmaceutical industry due to their high surface-to-volume ratio. Among the many techniques used to obtain nanoparticles, those based on supercritical fluids ensure reduced dimensions, narrow particle size distributions, and a very low or zero solvent residue in the powders. This review focuses on using supercritical carbon dioxide-based processes to obtain the nanoparticles of compounds used for the treatment or prevention of cancer. The scientific literature papers have been classified into two groups: nanoparticles consisting of a single active principle ingredient (API) and carrier/API nanopowders. Various supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) based techniques for obtaining the nanoparticles were considered, along with the operating conditions and advantages and disadvantages of each process.

Abstract
Zn-Al Layered Double Hydroxides (Zn-Al LDHs) and its calcined form were successfully prepared and utilized for the removal of methyl violet (MV) and treatment of peat water by photocatalytic oxidation. The research was aimed to evaluate the effect of calcination to Zn-Al LDHs for the effect on the physicochemical character and the capability as a photocatalyst. The characterization of the samples was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Brunauer–Emmet–Teller specific surface area (BET), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results showed that the increased BET specific surface area along with the enhanced porous structure was achieved by the calcination procedure, which is associated with the enhanced interlayer space of d003 identified by XRD analysis. Thermal conversion showed an influence to the increased band gap energy from 3.10 eV in the uncalcined Zn-Al LDHs into 3.16 eV for the calcined material. These character changes contributed to the enhanced photocatalytic activity of the Zn-AL LDHs by calcination, which was proposed and verified by experiments. It was observed that photocatalytic activity of the material for MV gave about a 45.57% removal of MV and a 68% removal for the natural organic material of the peat water.

Abstract
In the present work, multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles at pH 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, and 10.0 were prepared through the coprecipitation method to improve the antibacterial activity. Morphological, structural, and optical analysis, such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and field emission scanning electron microscopy, was used to investigate the formation of composites. Analysis revealed that there were variations in morphology from agglomerated structures to rod-like then flower-like structures as pH varied from 6.0 to 10.0. The MWCNT/ZnO composite enhanced the antibacterial activity especially for Staphylococcus aureus as a maximum 20 mm zone of inhibition was observed. The data presented in the present study proves that such composites are an efficient antibacterial agent and suitable for therapy for severe infections.

Abstract
Aluminum-doped zinc oxide film was deposited on a glass substrate by mist chemical vapor deposition method. The influence of different aluminum doping ratios on the structural and optical properties of zinc oxide film was investigated. The XRD results revealed that the diffraction peak of (101) crystal plane was the dominant peak for the deposited AZO films with the Al doping ratios increasing from 1 wt % to 3 wt %. It was found that the variation of AZO film structures was strongly dependent on the Al/Zn ratios. The intertwined nanosheet structures were obtained when Zn/O ratios were greater than Al/O ratios with the deposition temperature of 400 °C. The optical transmittance of all AZO films was greater than 80% in the visible region. The AZO film deposited with Al doping ratio of 2 wt % showed the highest photocatalytic efficiency between the wavelength of 475 nm and 700 nm, with the high first-order reaction rate of 0.004 min−1 under ultraviolet radiation. The mechanism of the AZO film influenced by aluminum doping ratio during mist chemical vapor deposition process was revealed.

Abstract
A photo-Fenton process using a local iron oxide as a natural catalyst was compared to Fenton and UV/H2O2 advanced oxidation processes for degrading crystal violet (CV) dye in aqueous solutions. The catalyst was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectrum, X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis spectroscopy, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis. The optical properties proved that the catalyst represents a good candidate for photocatalytic activity. The impact of different parameters (catalyst dose, initial CV concentration, initial H2O2 concentration, pH) on the photo-Fenton efficiency was evaluated. A photo-Fenton process operated under UVC light irradiation, at spontaneous pH, with 1.0 g/L of catalyst and 30 mg/L of H2O2 was the most effective process, resulting in 98% CV dye removal within 3 h. LC-MS and ion-chromatography techniques were used to identify demethylated organic intermediates during the process. Furthermore, a regeneration study of the catalyst showed its stability and reusability (after three treatment cycles, CV dye degradation decreased from 94% to 83%). Finally, the photo-Fenton process was tested in the treatment of real textile wastewater, and the effluent was found to be in compliance with standards for industrial wastewater disposal into sewerage.

Abstract
The papers devoted to the purification of aquatic environments from industrial contaminants with the use of ZnO based nanosized photocatalysts in the period of 2018–2020 are analyzed. The data published in these papers have made it possible to determine the dye (V) destruction rate used further as a photocatalytic activity criterion. As shown by the comparative analysis of the photocatalytic activity of the studies structures, the highest rates of water purification from industrial azodye contaminants are demonstrated by hybrid ZnO/Au structures. At a destruction rate of V = 10%/min, the ZnO/Au structures are much better than all the other considered types of catalysts due to their morphology, low recombination rate of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, and nanoparticles with an absorption spectrum close to the solar spectrum. The review of literature data shows that the greatest attention of researchers in the considered time period is focused on the problem of the purification of water sources from industrial contaminants and, first of all, azodyes. Essential attention is also paid to the technological approaches applied by the authors to increase the photocatalytic activity of ZnO based nanostructures.

Abstract
Fe-doped titania photocatalysts (with 1, 2.5, and 3.5 wt. % Fe nominal content), showing photocatalytic activity under visible light, were prepared by a soft-template assisted sol-gel approach in the presence of the triblock copolymer Pluronic P123. An undoped TiO2 photocatalyst was also prepared for comparison. The photocatalysts were characterized by means of X-ray powder Diffraction (XRPD), Quantitative Phase Analysis as obtained by Rietveld refinement, Diffuse Reflectance (DR) UV-Vis spectroscopy, N2 adsorption/desorption at -196 °C, electrophoretic mobility in water (ζ-potential), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The physico-chemical characterization showed that all the samples were 100% anatase phase and that iron was present both in the bulk and at the surface of the Fe-doped TiO2. Indeed, the band gap energy (Eg) decreases with the Fe content, with Tauc's plot determined values ranging from 3.35 (undoped TiO2) to 2.70 eV (3.5 wt. % Fe). Notwithstanding the obtained Eg values, the photocatalytic activity results under visible light highlighted that the optimal Fe content was equal to 2.5 wt. % (Tauc's plot determined Eg = 2.74 eV). With the optimized photocatalyst and in selected operating conditions, under visible light it was possible to achieve 90% AO7 discoloration together with a TOC removal of 40% after 180 min. The kinetic behavior of the photocatalyst was also analyzed. Moreover, the tests in the presence of three different scavengers revealed that the main reactive species are (positive) holes and superoxide species. Finally, the optimized photocatalyst was also able to degrade phenol under visible light.

Abstract
Organic dyes that are extensively released in wastewater from various industries remain the priority concern in the modern world. Therefore, a novel catalyst, bismuth-iron selenide, was prepared through the solvothermal process for photocatalytic degradation of a carcinogenic crystal violet dye. The catalyst was supported with chitosan to form iron-bismuth selenide-chitosan microspheres (BISe-CM). The synthesized catalyst was composed of iron, bismuth, and selenium in a definite proportion based on EDX analysis. FTIR analysis confirmed the synthesis of BISe-CM from characteristic bands of metal selenium bond as well as the typical bands of chitosan. SEM analysis illustrated the average diameter of the barren catalyst to be 54.8 nm, while the average size of the microspheres was 982.5 um. The BISe-CM has the surface of a pore with an average size of 0.5 um. XRD analysis revealed that the synthesized catalyst was composed of Fe3Se4 and Bi2Se3. The prepared catalyst showed better degradation efficiency for crystal violet dye at optimized conditions under solar irradiation. Employing 0.2 g of BISe-CM resulted in complete degradation for 30 ppm of crystal violet dye in 150 min at pH 8.0. The reusability of the catalyst up to four consecutive times makes it a more attractive and practical candidate. Moreover, the catalyst followed pseudo-first-order kinetics in the decontamination of crystal violet. Conclusively, the novel photocatalyst showed the best decolorizing property of crystal violet under sunlight irradiation and could be a suitable alternative for dye decontamination from wastewater.

Abstract
In this work, zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles were modified in a circulating fluidized bed through argon and hydrogen (Ar–H) alternating-current (AC) arc plasma, which shows the characteristics of nonequilibrium and equilibrium plasma at the same time. In addition, a circulating fluidized bed with two plasma jets was used for cyclic processing. The catalytic degradation performance on Rhodamine B (Rh B) by Ar–H plasma-modified ZnO and pure ZnO was tested in aqueous media to identify the significant role of hydrogen atoms in Rh B degradation mechanism. Meanwhile, the effects of plasma treatment time on the morphology, size and photocatalytic performance of ZnO were also investigated. The results demonstrated that ZnO after 120-min treatment by Ar–H plasma showed Rh B photocatalytic degradation rate of 20 times greater than that of pure ZnO and the reaction follows a first kinetics for the Rh B degradation process. Furthermore, the photocatalyst cycle experiment curve exhibited that the modified ZnO still displays optimum photocatalytic activity after five cycles of experiment. The improvement of photocatalytic activity and luminescence performance attributes to the significant increase in the surface area, and the introduction of hydrogen atoms on the surface also could enhance the time of carrier existence where the hydrogen atoms act as shallow donors.

Abstract
Biomimetic/bioinspired engineering and sulfidation processes are effective strategies for improving the visible light-driven photocatalytic performance of ZnO photocatalysts. A facile electrodeposition process in high oxygen-flux conditions was used to synthesize well-defined fractal micro/nanoferns, consequently increasing the photocatalyst’s light-trapping capability and the accessible active surface. Next, a simple sulfidation process was used to form a thin layer of ZnS, producing ZnO@ZnS core@shell micro/nanoferns, thereby tuning the optoelectronic properties and extending the photoresponse to the visible region. The ZnO@ZnS micro/nanoferns exhibited clear superiority over other ZnO photocatalysts in the photooxidation of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and the photoreduction of Cr(VI). Their excellent photocatalytic performance allowed the photodegradation under UV-filtered sunlight of nearly 97% of methylene blue after 60 min; the mineralization of >98% of a mixture of methylene blue, 4-nitrophenol, and rhodamine-B after 210 min; and the removal of nearly 65% of Cr(VI) after 180 min. In addition, the ZnO@ZnS micro/nanoferns demonstrated a good ability to decontaminate an inorganic-organic bipollutant system, with promising potential to leverage synergistic effects. Finally, these micro/nanoferns presented great recyclability and reusability for both photooxidation and photoremediation processes. These findings support that sulfidation and biomimetic engineering can be a superior route for designing efficient sunlight-driven ZnO-photocatalysts for water decontamination.
