Simultaneous Removal of Estrogens and Antibiotics from Livestock Manure Using Fenton Oxidation Technique

Pd/MIL-100(Fe) as hydrogen activator for FeIII/FeII cycle: Fenton removal of sulfamethazine

Masses of iron sludge generated from engineering practice of classic Fenton reaction constraints its further promotion. Accelerating the FeIII/FeII cycle may be conducive to reducing the initial ferrous slat dosage and the final iron sludge. Based on the reduction of Pd/MIL-100(Fe)-activated hydrogen, an improved Fenton system named MHACF-MIL-100(Fe) was developed at ambient temperature and pressure. 97.8% of sulfamethazine, the target pollutant in this work, could be degraded in 5 min under the conditions of 20 mM H2O2, 25 μM ferrous chloride, initial pH 3.0, 2 g·L-1 composite catalyst Pd/MIL-100(Fe) and hydrogen gas 60 mL·min-1. Combining density functional theory (DFT) calculation and intermediate detection, the degradation of this antibiotic was inferred to start from the cleavage of N-S bond. The catalytic of Pd/MIL-100(Fe), demonstrated by the removal efficiency of SMT and the catalyst morphology, remained intact after six reaction cycles. The present study provides an insight into the promotion of Fenton reaction.

Activated Carbon Assisted Fenton-like Treatment of Wastewater Containing Acid Red G

The Fenton reaction as an effective advanced oxidation technology has been widely used in wastewater treatment for its stable effluent quality, simple operation, mild condition, and higher organic degradation with non-selectivity. However, the traditional Fenton reaction is limited by the sluggish regeneration of Fe2+, resulting in a slower reaction rate, and it is necessary to further increase the dosage of Fe2+, which will increase the production of iron sludge. Activated carbon (AC) has a strong adsorption property, and it cannot be ignored that it also can reduce Fe3+. In this study, the degradation of acid red G (ARG) by adding AC to the Fe3+/H2O2 system, the role of the reducing ability, and the reason why AC can reduce Fe3+ were studied. By adding three kinds of ACs, including coconut shell-activated carbon (CSPAC), wood-activated carbon (WPAC), and coal-activated carbon (CPAC), the ability of ACs to assist the Fe3+/H2O2 Fenton-like system to degrade ARG was clarified. Through the final treatment effect and the ability to reduce Fe3+, the type of AC with the best promotion effect was CSPAC. The different influence factors of particle size, the concentration of CSPAC, concentration of H2O2, concentration of Fe3+, and pH value were further observed. The best reaction conditions were determined as CSPAC powder with a particle size of 75 μm and dosage of 0.6 g/L, initial H2O2 concentration of 0.4 mmol/L, Fe3+ concentration of 0.1 mmol/L, and pH = 3. By reducing the adsorption effect of CSPAC, it was further observed that CSPAC could accelerate the early reaction rate of the degradation process of ARG by the Fe3+/H2O2 system. FT-IR and XPS confirmed that the C-O-H group on the surface of CSPAC could reduce Fe3+ to Fe2+. This study can improve the understanding and role of AC in the Fenton reaction, and further promote the application of the Fenton reaction in sewage treatment.

Occurrence and risk assessment of five kinds of antimicrobial in mattress on swine farm use ectopic fermentation systems in Zhejiang Province

Mattress is among the main products of ectopic fermentation system (EFS); however, the research on the data of antimicrobial residues in the mattress of EFS and risk assessments of mattress have not been conducted. This study involved a scale survey to assess the levels and distributions of 54 antimicrobial residues, including 4 tetracyclines, 19 quinolones, 22 sulfonamides, 3 amphenicols, and 6 macrolides in mattress on 12 swine farms that use ectopic fermentation systems (EFS) in Zhejiang Province. A total of 25 antimicrobials were detected in mattress, and the total residue amount of antimicrobial in mattress samples of each farm was 0.77-28.2 g/T. Chlortetracycline had the highest contribution rate, and the residue amount of antimicrobial in mattress is not entirely determined by the start-up time of EFS but is related to the use of feed containing antimicrobial, medication habits, the level of mattress management, and maintenance methods of EFS. The risk assessments of antimicrobial in the mattress were carried out. The results show that the risk of using mattress of EFS for soil is low.

Fate, occurrence, and removal of estrogens in livestock wastewaters

During the last decades, livestock and animal feeding operations have been expanded. In parallel, these activities are among the major sources of estrogens in the environment. Thus, considering the environmental and health risks associated with estrogenic compounds, this work reviews the fate, occurrence, and removal of free and conjugated E1, E2, and E3 in livestock wastewaters. A systematic literature review was carried out, and after applying the eligibility criteria, 66 peer-reviewed papers were selected. Results suggest high estrogen concentrations and, consequently, high estrogenic activity, especially in samples from swine farming. E1 and E2 are frequently found in wastewaters from bovine, swine, and other livestock effluents. Aerobic treatment processes were more efficient for estrogen removal, whereas anaerobic systems seem poorly effective. Removal efficiencies of estrogens and estrogenic activity of up to 90% were reported for constructed wetlands, advanced pond systems, trickling filters, membrane bioreactors, aerated and nitrifying reactors, combined air flotation, and vegetable oil capture processes. High concentrations found in wastewaters from livestock allied to the removal efficiencies reported for anaerobic processes (usually used to treat livestock wastewaters) evidence the importance of monitoring these compounds in environmental matrices.

Progress in research and development of particle electrodes for three-dimensional electrochemical treatment of wastewater: a review

A three-dimensional (3D) electrochemical technology is regarded as a very effective industrial wastewater treatment method as it has high treatment efficiency, high current efficiency, and low energy consumption, and especially can completely mineralize nonbiodegradable organic pollutants. The core of the 3D electrochemical technology is a particle electrode, and the particle electrode plays several important roles for removing pollutants during the electrochemical reaction process. Many types of particle electrodes have been developed and used for different types of wastewater treatment. In this paper, a comprehensive review on the research and development of particle electrodes of the 3D electrochemical reactors for wastewater treatment is conducted. Specifically, the role that the particle electrode plays during the 3D electrochemical treatment of wastewater is thoroughly investigated and systematized. In addition, the different types of particle electrodes used in the 3D electrochemical wastewater treatment are classified into several types according to the presence or absence of a catalyst and the main components of the particle electrode or carrier. Also, focusing on the recent research results, the structural characteristics, performance, advantages and defects, and the role of catalyst components of each particle electrodes are evaluated. Finally, the direction and prospect of future research on the particle electrode is presented.

Promoted oxidation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soils by dual persulfate/calcium peroxide system

In situ chemical oxidations (ISCO) have been demonstrated as effective ways for remediating soils contaminated with organic pollutants by complete mineralization. This work aims to develop a technology for the oxidation remediation of soils contaminated with Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) using a dual calcium peroxide (CP)/persulfate (PS) oxidant system activated by oxalic acid (OA)-chelating Fe²⁺. The dual peroxide system was set up, and the effects of 5 single factors (i.e., CP dosage, PS dosage, Fe²⁺ dosage, OA concentration, and soil/water ratio) on PAHs degradation were studied using the single-factor experiment. The response surface method was then introduced to obtain the optimized experimental conditions (CP dosage, PS dosage, OA concentration) of the dual peroxide system. The result shows that the dual peroxide system significantly increased the PAHs degradation and the maximum PAHs degradation efficiency (70.8%) was achieved by the dual peroxide system under optimal conditions (PS dosage, CP concentration, Fe²⁺/PS ratio, and Fe²⁺/OA ratio was 8.89 g/kg, 0.18 mol/L, 1/4 and 0.62) at neutral soil condition. This study is an illustration of the promising efficiency of the dual peroxide system for PAH oxidation in the neutral soil and has great potential for remediation of PAHs contaminated farmland soils.

Antibiotics in animal manure and manure-based fertilizers: Occurrence and ecological risk assessment

The extensive use of antibiotics globally and their residues in the environment has become a serious concern. Intensive animal farming is considered to be a major contributor to the increased environmental burden of antibiotics. Although some antibiotic investigations have been advancing around the world, as an important agricultural country, the information on these pollutants in animal farms are very limited in China. Previous studies have explored few antibiotic residues in livestock farms, whereas information on some antibiotics has remained unknown. The current study analyzed residues of 32 common veterinary antibiotics in manure and manure-based fertilizers collected from Jiangsu Province, China. In most of the manure and fertilizer samples, sulfamethazine and tetracycline were present, with high concentration up to 5650 and 1920 μg·kg^-1, respectively. These detected antibiotics have weak relationships with physicochemical properties. Ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, sulfamethazine, and sulfachlorpyridazine, hence pose a high potential risk to crops based on the toxicological data of organisms and plants in the soil environment. However, soil invertebrate, such as earthworms, Planococcus Citri. and Folsomia fimeraria., had low ecological risks. Our results showed the presence of antibiotics in livestock and poultry farms plus the potential risks to the soil ecosystem. Therefore, the findings can provide guidelines for monitoring antibiotic residues in agroecosystems, as well as insights into the associated ecological risks of using the two products.
