Sulfonated Hydrothermal Carbons from Cellulose and Glucose as Catalysts for Glycerol Ketalization

New insights into the interaction of triethylphosphine oxide with silica surface: exchange between different surface species

Although chemical shift values of triethylphosphine oxide (TEPO) adsorbed on acidic solids have been considered as an indication of acid strength, in this work we demonstrate that the chemical shift depends also on the adsorbed amount of TEPO. On silica, the presence of three different adsorbed species, physisorbed on non-acidic surface, chemisorbed through a single H bond and chemisorbed through two H bonds, can be detected by the correlation of the ³¹P chemical shift with the TEPO adsorbed amount. TEPO chemical exchange between the different sites is demonstrated by the single NMR signal obtained in all the cases, and also by the variation of the line width, which is broader at low surface coverage due to the slower chemical exchange because of the longer average distance between surface sites.

Activated Bentonite Nanocomposite for the Synthesis of Solketal from Glycerol in the Liquid Phase

Activated bentonites are low-cost acid catalysts used in several reactions. However, their application at an industrial scale is affected by the formation of colloidal suspensions when these bentonites are in aqueous solutions. In order to overcome these limitations, this work proposes obtaining a catalyst based on a composite containing natural bentonite within a silica–resin structure, which allows separating and re-utilizing the catalyst more easily and without centrifugal filtration requirements. By means of characterization techniques, the present study determined that the activated bentonite composite presented a total specific surface area of ~360 m2 g−1, ~4 mmol of acid sites per gram of bentonite, and sites with strong acid strength, all of which bestowed activity and selectivity in the solketal synthesis reaction from glycerol and acetone, reaching equilibrium conversion within a short reaction time. Furthermore, the present work developed a Langmuir–Hinshelwood–Hougen–Watson kinetic model, achieving an activation energy of 50.3 ± 3.6 kJ mol−1 and a pre-exponential factor of 6.4 × 106 mol g−1 L−1 s−1, which are necessary for reactor design.

Recent Advances in the Valorization of Biodiesel By-Product Glycerol to Solketal

The exponential rise of the biodiesel production has resulted in a considerable amount of glycerol as a by-product, which must be valorized to ensure the sector’s long-term viability. As a result, cost-effective glycerol conversions for significant value-added chemicals are essential for the biodiesel production in the long run. Solketal, a glycerol by-product, is obtained as a potential fuel additive in the biodiesel industry. Recently, several heterogeneous acid-catalysts stand out as a promising catalyst for solketal production where biomass-based catalyst gained attraction owing to their biodegradability, eco-friendly, and abundant availability. Furthermore, magnetic nanoparticles-derived catalysts along with sulfonated functionalized catalyzed, zeolites, resins, enzymatic, etc. have proved their efficiency in solketal production. In this review, a wider study on the recent advances of the catalysts has been discussed along with their preparation, various reaction parameters, its application, and efficiency for biodiesel industry. This study opens up incredible prospects for us to use renewable energy sources, which will benefit the industry, the environment, and the economy.

Obtaining lignocellulosic biomass-based catalysts and their catalytic activity in cellobiose hydrolysis and acetic acid esterification reactions

Global challenges prompt the world to modify its strategies and shift from a fossil-fuel-based economy to a bio-resource-based one with the production of renewable biomass chemicals. Different processes exist that allow the transformation of raw biomass into desirable bio-based products and/or energy. In this work different biochars that were obtained as a by-product from birch chip fast pyrolysis and carbonization were used as is or chemically/physically treated. These sulfonated carbon catalysts were compared to a commercially available sulfonated styrene-divinylbenzene macroreticular resin (Dowex 50W X8). Characterisation (water content and pH value, FTIR, base titration, element analysis and N2 desorption) was done to evaluate the obtained sulfonated biocarbon catalysts. Catalytic activity was tested using cellobiose (CB) hydrolysis and acetic acid esterification. For the catalytic CB hydrolysis, we tested the reaction temperature, time and CB and catalyst mass ratios. The determined optimal conditions were 120 °C and 24 h, with CB and catalyst mass ratio 1 : 5. The highest glucose yield was observed for biochar obtained from the birch chip fast pyrolysis process (BC_Py-H2SO4) - 92% within 24 h for 120 °C. Comparably high glucose yield was observed for biochar that was obtained in birch chip carbonization (BC_Carbon-H2SO4) - 86% within 24 h for 120 °C.

Recent Advances in Glycerol Catalytic Valorization: A Review

Once a biorefinery is ready to operate, the main processed materials need to be completely evaluated in terms of many different factors, including disposal regulations, technological limitations of installation, the market, and other societal considerations. In biorefinery, glycerol is the main by-product, representing around 10% of biodiesel production. In the last few decades, the large-scale production of biodiesel and glycerol has promoted research on a wide range of strategies in an attempt to valorize this by-product, with its transformation into added value chemicals being the strategy that exhibits the most promising route. Among them, C3 compounds obtained from routes such as hydrogenation, oxidation, esterification, etc. represent an alternative to petroleum-based routes for chemicals such as acrolein, propanediols, or carboxylic acids of interest for the polymer industry. Another widely studied and developed strategy includes processes such as reforming or pyrolysis for energy, clean fuels, and materials such as activated carbon. This review covers recent advances in catalysts used in the most promising strategies considering both chemicals and energy or fuel obtention. Due to the large variety in biorefinery industries, several potential emergent valorization routes are briefly summarized.

Study of interactions between Brønsted acids and triethylphosphine oxide in solution by 31P NMR: evidence for 2 : 1 species

The variation of the 31P chemical shift of triethylphosphine oxide in CDCl3 solution with a series of Brønsted acids at different molar ratios allows the determination of the value for the 1 : 1 species (δ1 : 1), which is much lower than the reported value at infinite dilution. This value correlates with the pKa of the acid in two zones, for acids stronger and weaker than TEPO-H+. The acid strength also controls the exchange rate in solution. The evolution of the chemical shift at high acid/TEPO molar ratios indicates the existence of a second TEPO-acid interaction, which is also dependent on the acid strength. This interaction is much more favorable in the case of a diacid, which shows chemical shift higher than expected for its pKa1 value.
