ZIF-8 Metal Organic Framework for the Conversion of Glucose to Fructose and 5-Hydroxymethyl Furfural

Amorphous-crystalline phase transition and intrinsic magnetic property of nickel organic framework for easy immobilization and recycling of β-Galactosidase

This work describes the synthesis of fibrous nickel-based metal organic framework (Ni-ZIF) via simple solvothermal method. The material formed was calcinated at 400, 600, 800 °C to improve its surface area, porosity and enzyme binding capacity. Changes in X-ray diffraction pattern after calcination revealed the Ni-ZIF transitioned from amorphous to crystalline structure. The surface area, pore volume and pore size for Ni-ZIF@600 were found to be 312.15 m2/g, 0.88 cm3/g and 10.28 nm, with an enzyme loading capacity of 593.85 mg/g after 30 h The free (β-Gal-LEH) and immobilized β-Galactosidase were stable at pH 7.5, temperature 50 °C, and yielded 70.70 and 63.95 mM glucose after milk lactose hydrolysis, respectively. The Ni-ZIF@600@β-Gal-LEH exhibited high enzyme retention capacity, maintaining 59.44 % of its original activity after 6-cycles. The enhanced magnetic property, enzyme binding capacity and easy recoverability of the calcinated Ni-ZIF could guarantee its industrial significance as immobilization module for enzyme-mediated catalysis.

Experimental and Computational Mechanisms that Govern Long-Term Stability of CO2-Adsorbed ZIF-8-Based Porous Liquids

Porous liquids (PLs) based on the zeolitic imidazole framework ZIF-8 are attractive systems for carbon capture since the hydrophobic ZIF framework can be solvated in aqueous solvent systems without porous host degradation. However, solid ZIF-8 is known to degrade when exposed to CO₂ in wet environments, and therefore the long-term stability of ZIF-8-based PLs is unknown. Through aging experiments, the long-term stability of a ZIF-8 PL formed using the water, ethylene glycol, and 2-methylimidazole solvent system was systematically examined, and the mechanisms of degradation were elucidated. The PL was found to be stable for several weeks, with no ZIF framework degradation observed after aging in N₂ or air. However, for PLs aged in a CO₂ atmosphere, formation of a secondary phase occurred within 1 day from the degradation of the ZIF-8 framework. From the computational and structural evaluation of the effects of CO₂ on the PL solvent mixture, it was identified that the basic environment of the PL caused ethylene glycol to react with CO₂ forming carbonate species. These carbonate species further react within the PL to degrade ZIF-8. The mechanisms governing this process involves a multistep pathway for PL degradation and lays out a long-term evaluation strategy of PLs for carbon capture. Additionally, it clearly demonstrates the need to examine the reactivity and aging properties of all components in these complex PL systems in order to fully assess their stabilities and lifetimes.

Phosphomolybdic acid hydrate encapsulated in MIL-53 (Fe): a novel heterogeneous heteropoly acid catalyst for ultrasound-assisted regioselective nitration of phenols

In this study, a heterogeneous catalyst, PMA@MIL-53 (Fe) (MIL ⇒ Matériaux de l'Institut Lavoisier), has been used to replace the usual mineral acids such as sulfuric acid. A wide variety of nitration methods require the use of a mixture of acids such as concentrated nitric acid and sulfuric acid, which result in producing a large amount of acidic waste. During recent years, the use of the heterogeneous system for the nitration of aromatic compounds has been highly considered and used by chemists due to some specific advantages, i.e. easy separation of the product from the reaction mixture, the possibility of recycling and reusing the catalyst, etc. Herein, the catalyst was synthesized using a metal-organic framework and a heteropoly phosphomolybdic acid. The PMA@MIL-53 (Fe) was prepared using a similar method of MIL-53 (Fe) synthesis. Afterwards, FeCl3·6H2O and 1,4-benzene dicarboxylic acid (BDC) in a dimethylformamide solution were placed in an ultrasound bath and, then, HPA (heteropoly acid) was added to the reaction mixture. The PMA (phosphomolybdic acid) encapsulation in MIL-53 (Fe) was confirmed using various analysis. Under optimal conditions, the catalytic activity of PMA@MIL-53 (Fe) was evaluated in nitration of phenol under ultrasonic waves. Besides, the ratio of the two products of ortho and para was obtained using GC. Optimum conditions were reached after 15 minutes, in such a way that the loaded PMA was 0.02 g under optimal conditions, the efficiencies of ortho-nitrophenol and para nitrophenol were 54.98 and 45.01, respectively.

ZIF-8 metal organic framework composites as hydrogen evolution reaction photocatalyst: A review of the current state

In the past decade, extensive research has been devoted to synthesis of ZIF-8 materials for catalytic applications. As physico-chemical properties are synthesis-dependent, this review explores different synthesis strategies based the solvent and solvent-free synthesis of zeolitic imidazole framework. Accordingly, the effect of several parameters on the ZIF-8 synthesis were discussed including solvent, deprotonating agents, precursors ratio is delivered. Additionally, the advantages and disadvantages of each synthesis have been discussed and assessed. ZIF-8 textural and structural properties justify its wide use as a stable high surface area MOF in aqueous catalytic reactions. This review includes the applicatios of ZIF-8 materials in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The efficiency of the reviewed materials was fairly assessed. Finally, Limitations, drawbacks and future challenges were fully debated to ensure the industrial viability of the ZIFs.

The Central Role of Nitrogen Atoms in a Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-Derived Catalyst for Cathodic Hydrogen Evolution

Platinum usually offers the most effective active center for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), because of the optimal trade-off between the adsorption and desorption of hydrogeN atoms (H*) on Pt atoms. Herein, we report an unusual result regarding the active center of a HER catalyst, which was synthesized by electrodepositing traces of Pt nanoparticles (NPs) into a porous nitrogen-rich dodecahedron matrix derived from zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-8. With an ultra-low Pt loading of 2.76 μg cm^-2 , the N-Pt-bonded catalyst can produce a current density of 117 mA cm^-2 for the HER in 1.0 m H₂ SO₄ at an overpotential of 50 mV, whereas the commercial Pt/C (300 μg cm^-2 Pt) can only reach 50 mA cm^-2 under the same conditions. Cyclic voltammetry demonstrates that both the H* adsorption and the Pt oxidation are not allowed to occur on this catalyst, due to a full surface coverage of the trace Pt NPs by imidazole. The results from the specially designed experiments indicate that the imidazole N atoms may act as proton anchor-sites for the HER due to their electron donor nature. Density functional theory calculations also support a catalytic HER mechanism centered at the Pt-supported N active center, which needs a Gibbs free energy of H* absorption (ΔG_H* ) significantly smaller than the absolute value of ΔG_H* on the Pt(111) surface. We hope that the results of this study will encourage the research on novel N-centered catalysts for the HER.

Heterogeneous Catalysts for the Conversion of Glucose into 5-Hydroxymethyl Furfural

Lignocellulosic biomass, a cheap and plentiful resource, could play a key role in the production of sustainable chemicals. The simple sugars contained in the renewable lignocellulosic biomass can be converted into commercially valuable products such as 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF). A platform molecule, HMF can be transformed into numerous chemical products with potential applications in a wide variety of industries. Of the hexoses contained in the lignocellulosic biomass, the successful production of HMF from glucose has been a challenge. Various heterogeneous catalysts have been proposed over the last decade, ranging from zeolites to metal organic frameworks. The reaction conditions vary in the reports in the literature, which makes it difficult to compare catalysts reported in different studies. In addition, the slight variations in the synthesis of the same material in different laboratories may affect the activity results, because the selectivity towards desired products in this transformation strongly depends on the nature of the active sites. This poses another difficulty for the comparison of different reports. Furthermore, over the last decade the new catalytic systems proposed have increased profoundly. In this article, we summarize the heterogeneous catalysts: Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs), zeolites and conventional supported catalysts, that have been reported in the recent literature and provide an overview of the observed catalytic activity, in order to provide a comparison.

Preparation and Application of ZIF-8 Thin Layers

Herein we compare various preparation methods for thin ZIF-8 layers on a Cu substrate for application as a host material for omniphobic lubricant-infused surfaces. Such omniphobic surfaces can be used in thermal engineering applications, for example to achieve dropwise condensation or anti-fouling and anti-icing surface properties. For these applications, a thin, conformal, homogeneous, mechanically and chemically stable coating is essential. In this study, thin ZIF-8 layers were deposited on a Cu substrate by different routes, such as (i) electrochemical anodic deposition on a Zn-covered Cu substrate, (ii) doctor blade technique for preparation of a composite layer containing PVDF binder and ZIF-8, as well as (iii) doctor blade technique for preparation of a two-layer composite on the Cu substrate containing a PVDF-film and a ZIF-8 layer. The morphology and topography of the coatings were compared by using profilometry, XRD, SEM and TEM techniques. After infusion with a perfluorinated oil, the wettability of the surfaces was assessed by contact angle measurements, and advantages of each preparation method were discussed.

In Situ Synthesis of Sn-Beta Zeolite Nanocrystals for Glucose to Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF)

The Sn substituted Beta nanocrystals have been successfully synthesized by in-situ hydrothermal process with the aid of cyclic diquaternary ammonium (CDM) as the structure-directing agent (SDA). This catalyst exhibits a bifunctional catalytic capability for the conversion of glucose to hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). The incorporated Sn acting as Lewis acid sites can catalyze the isomerization of glucose to fructose. Subsequently, the Brønsted acid function can convert fructose to HMF via dehydration. The effects of Sn amount, zeolite type, reaction time, reaction temperature, and solvent on the catalytic performances of glucose to HMF, were also investigated in the detail. Interestingly, the conversion of glucose and the HMF yield over 0.4 wt% Sn-Beta zeolite nanocrystals using dioxane/water as a solvent at 120 °C for 24 h are 98.4% and 42.0%, respectively. This example illustrates the benefit of the in-situ synthesized Sn-Beta zeolite nanocrystals in the potential application in the field of biomass conversion.

Water Based Synthesis of ZIF-8 Assisted by Hydrogen Bond Acceptors and Enhancement of CO2 Uptake by Solvent Assisted Ligand Exchange

The aim of this work was to synthesize zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) by an alternative method and then modify the surface properties for enhancing the CO2 adsorption performance. The ZIF-8 was synthesized by a water based synthesis method using 2-methyl imidazole (2-MeIM) as a hydrogen bond donor and quaternary ammonium salts (QAS) as a hydrogen bond acceptor. The optimal synthesis conditions were investigated by varying (i) the order of precursor mixing during the synthesis process (ii) different QAS (tetrabutyl ammonium bromide (TBAB), tetraethyl ammonium bromide (TEAB) and trimethyl phenyl ammonium bromide (TMPAB)) and (iii) the ratio between 2-MeIM and QAS. The results show that the optimal synthesis condition was using TMPAB as the hydrogen bond acceptor with the ratio between 2-MeIM and TMPAB of 8:2 and in the order of first mixing both hydrogen bond donor and acceptor before adding Zn(NO3)2⋅6H2O solution. TMPAB can provide uniform size distribution with the smallest particle sizes of ZIF-8. This can be explained by the higher hydrogen bond strength between hydrogen bond donor (2-MeIM) and hydrogen bond acceptor (TMPAB) when compared with that of the rest of two QAS. The synthesized ZIF-8 was modified by solvent-assisted ligand exchange methods. The organic linker of ZIF-8 (2-MeIM) was exchanged by 2-aminobenzimidazole (2-NH2bZIM) and 2-phenylimidazole (2-PhIM). The CO2 uptake of modified ZIF-8 was enhanced upon exchanging with 2-NH2bZIM. The increase in CO2 uptake was due to an additional interaction between CO2 and exchanged imidazole linker and an increase in surface properties (higher surface area, pore size and pore volume).
