Using the Cahn–Hilliard Theory in Metastable Binary Solutions

Radially aligned hierarchical N-doped porous carbon beads derived from oil-sand asphaltene for long-life water filtration and wastewater treatment

The application of waste-derived highly efficient adsorbent for organic pollutants removal from water and wastewater is presented. Highly porous carbon beads with radially aligned macrochannels were prepared from asphaltene. Well-ordered inwardly aligned macrovoids favored solute diffusion and maximized the liquid accommodation capacity. A further N-doping could modulate the sorbent hydrophilicity leading to an outstanding absorption performance for a range of organic solvents and oily chemicals. N-doped carbon beads were effective sorbents of lopinavir (LNV) and ritonavir (RNV) from water and wastewater. The process of sorption was fast, and the highest removal was noted for RNV than LPV. N-doping favored LNV and RNV adsorption due to the increased porous structure of N-doped asphaltene beads. The chemisorption of both LPV and RTV was a rate-limiting step. The presence of co-pollutants in treated wastewater enhanced LPV and RNV removal and an up to 470 % increase was noted. The presence of LPV or RTV in distilled water was not toxic to Aliivibrio fischeri or even can stimulate their growth. However, after the adsorption process, the solution of RTV reduced its toxicity significantly and the final solution was not toxic. The opposite effect was noted for LPV. Given the repeatability, high removal performance, and cost-effectiveness of the asphaltene-based carbon microtubes when compared to other well-known sorbents such as carbon nanotubes, they demonstrated great potential as a low-cost and effective agent for long-life water filtration and wastewater treatment.

Tuneable phase behaviour and glass transition via polymerization-induced phase separation in crosslinked step-growth polymers

Once limited to chain-growth polymerizations, fine control over polymerization-induced phase separation (PIPS) has recently been demonstrated in rubber-toughened thermoset materials formed through step-growth polymerizations. The domain length scales of these thermoset materials can be elegantly tuned by utilizing a binary mixture of curing agents (CAs) that individually yield disparate morphologies. Importantly, varying the composition of the binary mixture affects characteristics of the materials such as glass transition temperature and tensile behavior. Here, we establish a full phase diagram of PIPS in a rubber-toughened epoxy system tuned by a binary CA mixture to provide a robust framework of phase behaviour. X-Ray scattering in situ and post-PIPS is employed to elucidate the PIPS mechanism whereby an initial polymerization-induced compositional fluctuation causes nanoscale phase separation of rubber and epoxy components prior to local chain crosslinking and potential macrophase separation. We further demonstrate the universality of this approach by alternatively employing binary epoxy or binary rubber mixtures to achieve broad variations in morphology and glass transitions.

Emergence of uniform linearly-arranged micro-droplets entrapping DNA and living cells through water/water phase-separation

Living cells maintain their lives through self-organization in an environment crowded with a rich variety of biological species. Recently, it was found that micro-droplets containing biomacromolecules, which vary widely in size, are generated accompanied by water/water phase-separation by simple mechanical mixing of an aqueous solution with binary polymers. Here, we report that cell-sized droplets of nearly the same size are generated as a linear array within a glass capillary upon the introduction of a binary polymer solution of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and dextran (DEX). Interestingly, when DNA molecules are added to the polymer solution, stable droplets entrapping DNA molecules are obtained. Similarly, living cells are entrapped spontaneously for the linearly-arranged cell-sized droplets. This simple method for generating micro-droplets entrapping DNA and also living cells is expected to stimulate further study on the self-construction of protocells and micro organoids.
