Methodology for Quantifying Volatile Compounds in a Liquid Mixture Using an Algorithm Combining B-Splines and Artificial Neural Networks to Process Responses of a Thermally Modulated Metal-Oxide Semiconductor Gas Sensor

Metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensors have many advantages, but the main obstacle to their widespread use is the cross-sensitivity observed when using this type of detector to analyze gas mixtures. Thermal modulation of the heater integrated with a MOS gas sensor reduced this problem and is a promising solution for applications requiring the selective detection of volatile compounds. Nevertheless, the interpretation of the sensor output signals, which take the form of complex, unique patterns, is difficult and requires advanced signal processing techniques. The study focuses on the development of a methodology to measure and process the output signal of a thermally modulated MOS gas sensor based on a B-spline curve and artificial neural networks (ANNs), which enable the quantitative analysis of volatile components (ethanol and acetone) coexisting in mixtures. B-spline approximation applied in the first stage allowed for the extraction of relevant information from the gas sensor output voltage and reduced the size of the measurement dataset while maintaining the most vital features contained in it. Then, the determined parameters of the curve were used as the input vector for the ANN model based on the multilayer perceptron structure. The results show great usefulness of the combination of B-spline and ANN modeling techniques to improve response selectivity of a thermally modulated MOS gas sensor.

Synthesis of ZIF-8 Coating on ZnO Nanorods for Enhanced Gas-Sensing Performance

Firstly, ZnO nanorods were prepared by a relatively simple method, and then self-sacrificed by a water bath heating method to generate a commonly used porous ZIF-8 and firmly attached to the ZnO surface. The successful synthesis of synthetic composites was demonstrated with various detection methods. The gas-sensing results show that the ZIF-8-coated ZnO with a core-shell structure exhibits better response than the raw ZnO because of the increased specific surface area and active sites.

One-Step Hydrothermal Synthesis of 3D Interconnected rGO/In2O3 Heterojunction Structures for Enhanced Acetone Detection

Acetone detection is of great significance for environmental monitoring or diagnosis of diabetes. Nevertheless, fast and sensitive detection of acetone at low temperatures remains challenging. Herein, a series of rGO-functionalized three-dimensional (3D) In2O3 flower-like structures were designed and synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method, and their acetone-sensing properties were systematically investigated. Compared to the pure 3D In2O3 flower-like structures, the rGO-functionalized 3D In2O3 flower-like structures demonstrated greatly improved acetone-sensing performance at relatively low temperatures. In particular, the 5-rGO/In2O3 sensor with an optimized decoration exhibited the highest response value (5.6) to 10 ppm acetone at 150 °C, which was about 2.3 times higher than that of the In2O3 sensor (2.4 at 200 °C). Furthermore, the 5-rGO/In2O3 sensor also showed good reproducibility, a sub-ppm-level detection limit (1.3 to 0.5 ppm), fast response and recovery rates (3 s and 18 s, respectively), and good long-term stability. The extraordinary acetone-sensing performance of rGO/In2O3 composites can be attributed to the synergistic effect of the formation of p-n heterojunctions between rGO and In2O3, the large specific surface area, the unique flower-like structures, and the high conductivity of rGO. This work provides a novel sensing material design strategy for effective detection of acetone.

Green Synthesis of Metal Oxides Semiconductors for Gas Sensing Applications

During recent decades, metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) have sparked more attention in various applications and industries due to their excellent sensing characteristics, thermal stability, abundance, and ease of synthesis. They are reliable and accurate for measuring and monitoring environmentally important toxic gases, such as NO₂, NO, N₂O, H₂S, CO, NH₃, CH₄, SO₂, and CO₂. Compared to other sensing technologies, MOS sensors are lightweight, relatively inexpensive, robust, and have high material sensitivity with fast response times. Green nanotechnology is a developing branch of nanotechnology and aims to decrease the negative effects of the production and application of nanomaterials. For this purpose, organic solvents and chemical reagents are not used to prepare metal nanoparticles. On the contrary, the synthesis of metal or metal oxide nanoparticles is done by microorganisms, either from plant extracts or fungi, yeast, algae, and bacteria. Thus, this review aims at illustrating the possible green synthesis of different metal oxides such as ZnO, TiO₂, CeO₂, SnO₂, In₂O₃, CuO, NiO, WO_3, and Fe₃O₄, as well as metallic nanoparticles doping.

Structures, Electronic Properties, and Gas Permeability of 3D Pillared Silicon Carbide Nanostructures

Silicon carbide (SiC) is recognized as excellent material for high power/temperature applications with a wide-band gap semiconductor. With different structures at the nanosize scale, SiC nanomaterials offer outstanding mechanical, physical, and chemical properties leading to a variety of applications. In this work, new 3D pillared SiC nanostructures have been designed and investigated based on self-consistent charge density functional tight-binding (SCC-DFTB) including Van der Waals dispersion corrections. The structural and electronic properties of 3D pillared SiC nanostructures with effects of diameters and pillar lengths have been studied and compared with 3D pillared graphene nanostructures. The permeability of small gas molecules including H₂O, CO₂, N₂, NO, O₂, and NO₂ have been demonstrated with different orientations into the 3D pillared SiC nanostructures. The promising candidate of 3D pillared SiC nanostructures for gas molecule separation application at room temperature is highlighted.
