Abstract
In this paper, a cataluminescence (CTL) gas sensor based on flower-like molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is developed. The experimental results show that it has high sensitivity and selectivity to acetaldehyde. The CTL sensor has the advantage of fast response; the response time is about 3 s and the recovery time is about 40 s. The optimal working temperature of this sensor is 174 °C, which is lower than that of the CTL sensors used for acetaldehyde detection in many other reports. Under the optimized conditions, the CTL signal intensity shows a good linear relationship with acetaldehyde concentration (R2 = 0.9991) within the concentration range of 40-2000 ppm, and the detection limit (LOD) is 3.75 ppm. The selectivity experiment results show that the sensor has an obvious response to acetaldehyde and a very weak response to acetic acid, and has no response to many other VOCs (ether, cyclohexane, butyl ether, carbon tetrachloride, ethanol, toluene, formaldehyde, glycerol, trichloromethane and xylene). After 8 repeated measurements for four weeks, the relative standard deviation (RSD) of the CTL sensor is 1.03%, indicating that it has good reproducibility and stability, which shows that the CTL sensor has a promising prospect for the detection of acetaldehyde.

Abstract
Metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensors have many advantages, but the main obstacle to their widespread use is the cross-sensitivity observed when using this type of detector to analyze gas mixtures. Thermal modulation of the heater integrated with a MOS gas sensor reduced this problem and is a promising solution for applications requiring the selective detection of volatile compounds. Nevertheless, the interpretation of the sensor output signals, which take the form of complex, unique patterns, is difficult and requires advanced signal processing techniques. The study focuses on the development of a methodology to measure and process the output signal of a thermally modulated MOS gas sensor based on a B-spline curve and artificial neural networks (ANNs), which enable the quantitative analysis of volatile components (ethanol and acetone) coexisting in mixtures. B-spline approximation applied in the first stage allowed for the extraction of relevant information from the gas sensor output voltage and reduced the size of the measurement dataset while maintaining the most vital features contained in it. Then, the determined parameters of the curve were used as the input vector for the ANN model based on the multilayer perceptron structure. The results show great usefulness of the combination of B-spline and ANN modeling techniques to improve response selectivity of a thermally modulated MOS gas sensor.

Abstract
The low operating temperature of nanowire gas sensors along with their high surface-to-volume ratio are two factors that make gas sensors more practical. In this paper, the growth of ZnO nanowires on a vertically aligned CNT forest is reported. The utilized method for ZnO growth was a rapid microwave-assisted hydrothermal route, which facilitates low-temperature and ultra-fast fabrication. Organic vapor sensing properties of fabricated samples were studied in response to different alcoholic vapors at a wide operating temperature range of 25 to 300 °C. Enhancement of the gas response was observed with increasing operating temperature. Moreover, the effect of the ZnO nanowire length on organic vapor sensing properties of CNT-ZnO samples was investigated. Results proved that CNT-ZnO samples with long ZnO wires exhibit higher sensitivity to examined analytes. Different length ZnO nanowires were attained via variation of the microwave exposure time and power. Fabrication parameters were selected based on numerous runs. The length of ZnO synthesized at each distinct run was calculated based on SEM micrographs of the samples.

Abstract
Gas sensors have wide applications in several fields, spanning diverse areas such as environmental monitoring, healthcare, defense, and the evaluation of personal and occupational exposure to hazardous chemicals. Different typologies of gas sensors have been proposed over the years, such as optical, electrochemical, and metal oxide gas sensors. In this paper, a relatively new typology of gas sensors is explored: the microwave gas sensor. It consists of a combination of a microwave transducer with a nanostructured sensing material deposited on an interdigitated capacitor (IDC). The device is designed and fabricated on a Rogers substrate (RO4003C) using microstrip technology, and investigated as a microwave transducer over the frequency range from 1 GHz to 6 GHz by measuring the scattering (S) parameters in response to gas adsorption and desorption. The sensing material is based on a nano-powder of barium titanate oxalate with a coating of urea (BaTiO(C2O4)2/CO(NH2)2). It is deposited on the IDC surface by drop coating, thus creating a sensing film. The developed prototype has been tested toward different oxygen (O2) concentrations and exhibits a sensitivity of 28 kHz/%O2. Special attention has been devoted to the measurement process. Besides the canonical short-open-load-thru (SOLT) calibration of the measured S-parameters, a thru-reflect-line (TRL) calibration has been performed in order to get rid of the parasitic electromagnetic (EM) contributions of the board connectors and the feedlines, thus moving the measurement reference planes to the edges of the IDC.

Abstract
To achieve an ultra-low concentration formaldehyde detection at low temperature, a platinum (Pt) assisted TiO2hierarchical nano blooming-flower sphere material is synthesized through hydrothermal method. SEM and transmission electron microscope characterizations show that the diameter of the nano sphere was around 2μm with dissilient rods of 60 nm in diameter and 1μm in length on the surface. The response (Ra/Rg) achieved form this nanomaterial to HCHO is 1.08 (100 ppb) and 5.82 (5 ppm) at 130 °C without an involvement of any light source or solution. The relationship curve between the responses and concentrations shows regular exponential trend. The verification of sensor stability done by a 3 month reliability test shows no response-degradation. The optimal response and stability is attributed to the massive dissilient rods on the surface of TiO2spheres and the assistance of Pt as a catalyzer disperses to intensify the formation of depletion area on the surface of TiO2. This study provide an attractive and cost effective solution for the detection of HCHO in air at a relatively low temperature.

Abstract
Since their development, surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices have attracted much research attention due to their unique functional characteristics, which make them appropriate for the detection of chemical species. The scientific community has directed its efforts toward the development and integration of new materials as sensing elements in SAW sensor technology with a large area of applications, such as for example the detection of volatile organic compounds, warfare chemicals, or food spoilage, just to name a few. Thin films play an important role and are essential as recognition elements in sensor structures due to their wide range of capabilities. In addition, other requisites are the development and application of new thin film deposition techniques as well as the possibility to tune the size and properties of the materials. This review article surveys the latest progress in engineered complex materials, i.e., polymers or functionalized carbonaceous materials, for applications as recognizing elements in miniaturized SAW sensors. It starts with an overview of chemoselective polymers and the synthesis of functionalized carbon nanotubes and graphene, which is followed by surveys of various coating technologies and routes for SAW sensors. Different coating techniques for SAW sensors are highlighted, which provides new approaches and perspective to meet the challenges of sensitive and selective gas sensing.
