The rising global population and rapid industrialization have frequently resulted in a significant escalation in energy requirements. Hydrogen, renowned for its eco-friendly and renewable characteristics, has garnered substantial interest as a fuel alternative to address the energy needs currently fulfilled by fossil fuels. Embracing such energy substitutes holds pivotal importance in advancing environmental sustainability, aiding in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions - the primary catalysts of global warming and climate fluctuations. This study elucidates recent trends in sewage sludge (SS)-derived hydrogen through diverse production pathways and critically evaluates the impact of varying parameters on hydrogen yield. Furthermore, a detailed analysis of the breakdown of the hydrogen generation process from SS is provided, along with an assessment of its economic dimensions. The review culminates by illuminating key obstacles in the adoption of this innovative technology, accompanied by practical recommendations to surmount these challenges. This comprehensive analysis is expected to attract considerable interest from stakeholders within the hydrogen production domain, fostering substantial engagement.

Current trends and future directions of global research on wastewater to energy: a bibliometric analysis and review

This paper presents a structured bibliometric analysis and review of the research publications recorded in the Web of Science database from 2000 to 2023 to methodically examine the landscape and development of the 'wastewater to energy' research field in relation to global trends, potential hotspots, and future research directions. The study highlights three main research themes in 'wastewater to energy', which are biogas production through anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge, methane generation from microbial wastewater treatment, and hydrogen production from biomass. The analysis reveals activated sludge, biochar, biomethane, biogas upgrading, hydrogen, and circular economy as key topics increasingly gaining momentum in recent research publications as well as representing potential future research directions. The findings also signify transformation to SDGs and circular economy practices, through the integration of on-site renewables and biogas upgrading for energy self-sufficiency, optimising energy recovery from wastewater treatment systems, and fostering research and innovation in 'wastewater to energy' supported by policy incentives. By shedding light on emerging trends, cross-cutting themes, and potential policy implications, this study contributes to informing both knowledge and practices of the 'wastewater to energy' research community.

Impact of light spectra on photo-fermentative biohydrogen production by Rhodobacter sphaeroides KKU-PS1

Purple non-sulphur bacteria can only capture up to 10 % light spectra and only 1-5 % of light is converted efficiently for biohydrogen production. To enhance light capture and conversion efficiencies, it is necessary to understand the impact of various light spectra on light harvesting pigments. During photo-fermentation, Rhodobacter sphaeroides KKU-PS1 cultivated at 30 °C and 150 rpm under different light spectra has been investigated. Results revealed that red light is more beneficial for biomass accumulation, whereas green light showed the greatest impact on photo-fermentative biohydrogen production. Light conversion efficiency by green light is 2-folds of that under control white light, hence photo-hydrogen productivity is ranked as green > red > orange > violet > blue > yellow. These experimental data demonstrated that green and red lights are essential for photo-hydrogen and biomass productions of R. sphaeroides and a clearer understanding that possibly pave the way for further photosynthetic enhancement research.

Algae-based approaches for Holistic wastewater management: A low-cost paradigm

Aquatic algal communities demonstrated their appeal for diverse industrial applications due to their vast availability, ease of harvest, lower production costs, and ability to biosynthesize valuable molecules. Algal biomass is promising because it can multiply in water and on land. Integrated algal systems have a significant advantage in wastewater treatment due to their ability to use phosphorus and nitrogen, simultaneously accumulating heavy metals and toxic substances. Several species of microalgae have adapted to thrive in these harsh environmental circumstances. The potential of algal communities contributes to achieving the United Nations' sustainable development goals in improving aquaculture, combating climate change, reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, and providing biomass as a biofuel feedstock. Algal-based biomass processing technology facilitates the development of a circular bio-economy that is both commercially and ecologically viable. An integrated bio-refinery process featuring zero waste discharge could be a sustainable solution. In the current review, we will highlight wastewater management by algal species. In addition, designing and optimizing algal bioreactors for wastewater treatment have also been incorporated.

A review on biological biohydrogen production: Outlook on genetic strain enhancements, reactor model and techno-economics analysis

Modernisation of industrial and transportation sector would have not imaginable without the help of fossil fuels, but constant usage has led to many environmental concerns. As a step forward, for safer next generation living we are forced to look into green fuels like bio‑hydrogen and higher alcohols. This review mainly focuses on bio‑hydrogen production via biological pathways, genetic improvements, knowledge gap, economics, and future directions. Dark and photo fermentation process with the factor influence the process (pH regulation, temperature, hydraulic retention time, organic loading rate, Maintenance, Nutrient) is studied. Integration of dark fermentation and microbial electrolysis cell is the most trending progression for sustainable bio‑hydrogen production. Genetic improvement of microbe for biohydrogen production via inactivation of hydrogenase (H2ase) and improve oxygen tolerant H2ase. In future, bioaugmentation, multidisciplinary integrated process and microbial electrolysis needs to be experimented in industrial level scale for successful commercialization. About 41.47 mmol H2/g DCW h at 40 g/L of optimum biohydrogen production was obtained through glycerol fermentation. From the studies, the cost of biohydrogen production was found to high with respect to the direct bio photolysis it cost around $7.24 kg-1; for indirect bio photolysis it cost around $7.54 kg-1 and for fermentation it cost around $7.61 kg-1.

Enhanced continuous biohydrogen production using dynamic membrane with conductive biofilm supporter

The present study investigated the effect of a conductive biofilm supporter on continuous production of biohydrogen in a dynamic membrane bioreactor (DMBR). Two lab-scale DMBRs were operated: one with a nonconductive polyester mesh (DMBR I) and the other with a conductive stainless-steel mesh (DMBR II). The highest average hydrogen productivity and the yield were 16.8% greater in DMBR II than in DMBR I, with values of 51.64 ± 0.66 L/L-d and 2.01 ± 0.03 mol H₂/mol hexose_consumed, respectively. The improved hydrogen production was concurrent with a higher NADH/NAD⁺ ratio and a lower ORP (Oxidation-reduction potential). Metabolic flux analysis implied that the conductive supporter promoted H₂-producing acetogenesis and repressed competitive NADH-consuming pathways, such as homoacetogenesis and lactate production. Microbial community analysis revealed that electroactive Clostridium sp. were the dominant H₂ producers in DMBR II. Conclusively, conductive meshes may be useful as biofilm supporters of dynamic membranes during H₂ production for selectively enhancing H₂-producing pathways.

Customized Multichannel Measurement System for Microbial Fuel Cell Characterization

This work presents the development of an automatic and customized measuring system employing sigma-delta analog-to-digital converters and transimpedance amplifiers for precise measurements of voltage and current signals generated by microbial fuel cells (MFCs). The system can perform multi-step discharge protocols to accurately measure the power output of MFCs, and has been calibrated to ensure high precision and low noise measurements. One of the key features of the proposed measuring system is its ability to conduct long-term measurements with variable time steps. Moreover, it is portable and cost-effective, making it ideal for use in laboratories without sophisticated bench instrumentation. The system is expandable, ranging from 2 to 12 channels by adding dual-channel boards, which allows for testing of multiple MFCs simultaneously. The functionality of the system was tested using a six-channel setup, and the results demonstrated its ability to detect and distinguish current signals from different MFCs with varying output characteristics. The power measurements obtained using the system also allow for the determination of the output resistance of the MFCs being tested. Overall, the developed measuring system is a useful tool for characterizing the performance of MFCs, and can be helpful in the optimization and development of sustainable energy production technologies.

Advances in the catalyzed photo-fermentative biohydrogen production through photo nanocatalysts with the potential of selectivity, and customization

Photo nanocatalyst have shownpromise in a variety of fields, including biohydrogen production where their catalytic efficiency is related to size, surface-to-volume ratio, and increasing the number of atoms on the surface. They can harvest solar light to create electron-hole pairs which is the key mechanism to define its catalytic efficiency, thus requiring suitable excitation wavelength, band energy, and crystal imperfections. In this review, a discussion on the role of photo nanocatalysts to catalyze biohydrogen production has been carried out. Photo nanocatalysts feature a large bandgap, andhigh defect concentration, thus having the ability to be tuned for their characteristics. Customization of the photo nanocatalyst has been addressed. Mechanism of the photo nanocatalysts in catalyzing biohydrogen has been discussed. Limiting factors of photo nanocatalysts were highlighted and several recommendations have been made to enhance the effective utilization of these photo nanocatalysts to enhance photo-fermentative biohydrogen production from biomass wastes.

Biological Hydrogen Production by Dark Fermentation in a Stirred Tank Reactor and Its Correlation with the pH Time Evolution

Dark fermentation is a hydrogen generating process carried out by anaerobic spore-forming bacteria that metabolize carbon sources producing gas and short-chain acids. The process can be controlled, and the hydrogen harvested if bacteria are grown in a reactor with favorable conditions. In this work, bacteria selected from natural sources were grown with a defined culture media, while pH was monitored, with the aim of relating the amount of generated hydrogen to the increase in hydron ion concentration. Therefore, a model based on the acid-base species mass balance is proposed and solved to estimate the lag phase time and measure the hydrogen production efficiency and kinetics. Hydrogen production in a stirred batch reactor was performed for 150–200 h, at given operating conditions using a previously defined growth media, to validate the model. Using the proposed model, the cumulated moles of produced hydrogen correlate well with those predicted from the pH curve. Hence, the modified Gompertz model parameters, largely used for describing the hydrogen generation kinetics by dark fermentation, were estimated from the pH curve and from the experimentally measured generated hydrogen. Satisfactory agreement was found, thus, validating the method.

Biofuel Generation from Potato Peel Waste: Current State and Prospects

Growing environmental concerns, increased population, and the need to meet the diversification of the source of global energy have led to increased demand for biofuels. However, the high cost of raw materials for biofuels production has continued to slow down the acceptability, universal accessibility, and affordability of biofuels. The cost of feedstock and catalysts constitutes a major component of the production cost of biofuels. Potato is one of the most commonly consumed food crops among various populations due to its rich nutritional, health, and industrial benefits. In the current study, the application of potato peel waste (PPW) for biofuel production was interrogated. The present state of the conversion of PPW to bioethanol and biogas, through various techniques, to meet the ever-growing demand for renewable fuels was reviewed. To satisfy the escalating demand for biohydrogen for various applications, the prospects for the synthesis of biohydrogen from PPW were proposed. Additionally, there is the potential to convert PPW to low-cost, ecologically friendly, and biodegradable bio-based catalysts to replace commercial catalysts. The information provided in this review will enrich scholarship and open a new vista in the utilization of PPW. More focused investigations are required to unravel more avenues for the utilization of PPW as a low-cost and readily available catalyst and feedstock for biofuel synthesis. The application of PPW for biofuel application will reduce the pump price of biofuels, ensure the appropriate disposal of waste, and contribute towards environmental cleanliness.

Membrane-Based Electrolysis for Hydrogen Production: A Review

Hydrogen is a zero-carbon footprint energy source with high energy density that could be the basis of future energy systems. Membrane-based water electrolysis is one means by which to produce high-purity and sustainable hydrogen. It is important that the scientific community focus on developing electrolytic hydrogen systems which match available energy sources. In this review, various types of water splitting technologies, and membrane selection for electrolyzers, are discussed. We highlight the basic principles, recent studies, and achievements in membrane-based electrolysis for hydrogen production. Previously, the Nafion™ membrane was the gold standard for PEM electrolyzers, but today, cheaper and more effective membranes are favored. In this paper, CuCl–HCl electrolysis and its operating parameters are summarized. Additionally, a summary is presented of hydrogen production by water splitting, including a discussion of the advantages, disadvantages, and efficiencies of the relevant technologies. Nonetheless, the development of cost-effective and efficient hydrogen production technologies requires a significant amount of study, especially in terms of optimizing the operation parameters affecting the hydrogen output. Therefore, herein we address the challenges, prospects, and future trends in this field of research, and make critical suggestions regarding the implementation of comprehensive membrane-based electrolytic systems.

Integrated biohydrogen production via lignocellulosic waste: Opportunity, challenges & future prospects

Hydrogen production through biological route is the cleanest, renewable and potential way to sustainable energy generation. Productions of hydrogen via dark and photo fermentations are considered to be more sustainable and economical approach over numerous existing biological modes. Nevertheless, both the biological modes suffer from certain limitations like low yield and production rate, and because of these practical implementations are still far away. Therefore, the present review provides an assessment and feasibility of integrated biohydrogen production strategy by combining dark and photo-fermentation as an advanced biochemical processing while using lignocellulosics biomass to improve and accelerate the biohydrogen production technology in a sustainable manner. This review also evaluates practical viability of the integrated approach for biohydrogen production along with the analysis of the key factors which significantly influence to elevate this technology on commercial ground with the implementation of various environment friendly and innovative approaches.

Woody biomass as a potential feedstock for fermentative gaseous biofuel production

Biogas and biohydrogen are compatible gaseous biofuels that can be blended with natural gas for reticulated fuel supply to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Sustainably grown woody biomass is emerging as a potential feedstock in the production of biofuels. Woody biomass is widely available, uses non-arable land for plantation, does not require synthetic fertilisers to grow and acts as a carbon sink. The cellulose and hemicellulose fractions of wood are renewable sources of sugars that can be used for fermentative production of gaseous biofuels. However, widespread use of wood as a gaseous biofuel feedstock is constrained due to the recalcitrant nature of wood to enzymatic hydrolysis. Pretreatment makes cellulose and hemicellulose accessible to microbial enzymes to produce fermentable sugars. Here we review wood composition, its structure and different pretreatment techniques in the context of their effects on deconstruction of wood to improve hydrolysis and fermentative gaseous fuel production. The anaerobic digestion of pretreated wood for biogas and dark fermentation for biohydrogen production are discussed with reference to gas yields. Key advancements in lab-scale research are described for pretreatments and for pure, co- and mixed culture fermentations. Limitations to yield improvements are identified and future perspectives and prospects of gaseous biofuel production from woody biomass are discussed, with reference to new developments in engineered biocatalysts and process integration.

Main Hydrogen Production Processes: An Overview

Due to its characteristics, hydrogen is considered the energy carrier of the future. Its use as a fuel generates reduced pollution, as if burned it almost exclusively produces water vapor. Hydrogen can be produced from numerous sources, both of fossil and renewable origin, and with as many production processes, which can use renewable or non-renewable energy sources. To achieve carbon neutrality, the sources must necessarily be renewable, and the production processes themselves must use renewable energy sources. In this review article the main characteristics of the most used hydrogen production methods are summarized, mainly focusing on renewable feedstocks, furthermore a series of relevant articles published in the last year, are reviewed. The production methods are grouped according to the type of energy they use; and at the end of each section the strengths and limitations of the processes are highlighted. The conclusions compare the main characteristics of the production processes studied and contextualize their possible use.
