Beyond profit margins: Orchestrating social, economic, and environmental sustainability within the Norwegian Salmon Food Supply Chain

Food Supply Chains (FSCs) have become increasingly complex with the average distance between producers and consumers rising considerably in the past two decades. Consequently, FSCs are a major source of carbon emissions and reducing transportation costs a major challenge for businesses. To address this, we present a mathematical model to promote the three core dimensions of sustainability (economic, environmental, and social), based on the Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) method. The model addresses the environmental dimension by intending to decrease the carbon emissions of different transport modes involved in the logistics network. Several supply chain network characteristics are incorporated and evaluated, with a consideration of social sustainability (job generation from operating various facilities). The mathematical model's robustness is demonstrated by testing and deploying it to a variety of problem instances. A real-life case study (Norwegian salmon supply chain) helps to comprehend the model's applicability. To understand the importance of optimizing food supply networks holistically, the paper investigates the impact of multiple supply chain permutations on total cost, demand fluctuations and carbon emissions. To address fluctuations in retail demand, we undertook sensitivity analysis for variations in demand, enabling the proposed model to revamp Norway's salmon supply chain network. Subsequently, the results are thoroughly examined to identify managerial implications.

Fundamental Drivers of Electrochemical Barriers

We find that ion creation and destruction dominate the behavior of electrochemical reaction barriers, through grand-canonical electronic structure calculations of proton deposition on transition metal surfaces. We show that barriers respond to potential in a nonlinear manner and trace this to the continuous degree of electron transfer as an ion is created or destroyed. This explains both Marcus-like curvature and Hammond-like shifts. Across materials, we find the barrier energy to be driven primarily by the charge presented on the surface, which, in turn, is dictated by the native work function, a fundamentally different driving force than in nonelectrochemical systems.

Road to zero: Research and industry perspectives on zero-emission commercial vehicles

Medium-and heavy-duty vehicles (MHDVs) comprise only a small fraction of vehicles on the road but disproportionately contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution from the transportation sector. Given the large variety of vehicle types-ranging from heavy-duty pickup trucks and box trucks to full-size buses and Class 8 tractor semi-trailers-and applications, multiple technologies offer opportunities to decarbonize MHDVs including battery-electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, and sustainable liquid fuels. Here we provide an overview of the status, opportunities, challenges, and uncertainties for these competing-and potentially complementary-technologies, including consideration of supporting infrastructure and prospects for future success. We find a bright outlook for zero-emission vehicles and discuss remaining barriers and uncertainties around fleet decisions and changes to vehicle operation, infrastructure, manufacturing, and future fuel and technology trends that can be informed through analysis.

A Driving-Adapt Strategy for the Electric Vehicle with Magneto-Rheological Fluid Transmission Considering the Powertrain Characteristics

The additional energy consumption caused by the incompatibility between existing electric vehicle (EV) powertrain characteristics and driving conditions inevitably curbs the promotion and development of EVs. Hence, there is an urgent demand for the driving-adapt strategy, which aims to minimize EV energy consumption due to both powertrain characteristics and driving conditions. In order to fully explore the EV driving-adapt potential, this paper equips the EV with a magneto-rheological fluid transmission (MRFT). First, an EV dynamics analysis of the driving conditions, the powertrain model considering the energy transmission process, and the driving-adapt transmission model considering magneto-rheological fluid (MRF) is conducted to clarify the quantitative relation between the driving conditions and the powertrain. Second, a driving-adapt optimization strategy in the specific driving condition is proposed. Finally, the results and discussions are executed to study (i) the determination of the MRFT fixed speed ratio and variable speed ratio range, (ii) the application potential analysis of the proposed strategy, and (iii) the feasibility analysis of the proposed strategy. The results indicate that (i) the urban driving condition has higher requirements for the MRFT, (ii) EVs equipped with MRFT achieve the expected driving performance at the most states of charge (SOCs) and environmental temperatures, except for the SOC lower than 10%, and (iii) the driving time with efficiency greater than 80% can be increased by the MRFT from 10.1% to 58.7% and from 66.8% to 88.8% in the urban and suburban driving conditions, respectively. Thus, the proposed driving-adapt strategy for the EV equipped with the MRFT has the potential to alleviate or eliminate the traffic problems caused by the incompatibility of the EV powertrain characteristics and the driving conditions.

Effects of inlet velocity and structure parameters on the performance of a rotary diesel particulate filter for truck diesel engine based on fuzzy grey relational analysis

In this paper, a three-dimensional mathematical model of the rotary diesel particulate filter (RDPF) for truck diesel engine is established according to the fluid mechanics and porous media theory. The effects of inlet velocity and structure parameters (diameter ratio, expansion angle and filter length) on the flow uniformity in the RDPF are investigated. Furthermore, the Fuzzy grey relational analysis (FGRA) is employed to make a weight analysis of the influences of structure parameters on the regeneration performance and pressure drop of the RDPF. The results show that the velocity uniformity in the RDPF can be improved by properly reducing the inlet velocity, diameter ratio or expansion angle θ₁. The capture-regeneration volume ratio with 8-10 is appropriate range for the structural optimization. Finally, the expansion angle θ₁ is the most important structure parameter for the filter regeneration performance (regeneration time R = 0.8467; regeneration efficiency R = 0.6849) and the diameter ratio is the most important structure parameter for the pressure drop at the capture-regeneration "balance point" (R = 0.9352).

A Focus on Electromobility within Smart City Solutions-Charging Stations, Renewable Energy, and Air Quality Monitoring

This paper reviews some of the existing methods for charging electric vehicles, generating renewable energy, and storing it. Plans of practical implementation in the city of Brno are compared with the situation in Glasgow. Moreover, it is essential to pay attention to integrated solutions in order to increase efficiency. Energy harvesting and charging systems are combined with an air quality measurement system and integrated into LED street lights. The collected data are sent to a central server for evaluation. The use of smart solutions is a modern approach to saving energy and reducing CO2 emissions in many sectors. As an example, the described solutions can be applied dually, in both civilian and military sectors. Considering the potential benefits of easier logistics or quiet operation, the potential military exploitation of technological capabilities is discussed from the perspective of enhancing citizens' security and safety in cities.

Recent Developments and Research Avenues for Polymers in Electric Vehicles

Plastics have been an indispensable material of choice in automobiles with wide range of applications such as interior, exterior, under the hood, and lighting/wiring applications. The prime motive of inclusion of these materials is increase in fuel efficiency and reduction in carbon footprint by replacing the energy intensive metallic counterparts. The current decade i. e., the 2020s has seen a recent surge in the sales of electronic vehicles. Although these numbers are promising, the growth in the rest of the parts of the world is not encouraging. It is primarily due to the skepticism involving battery life and efficiency, profitability, and environmental footprint when compared to conventional and hybrid vehicles. Also, a more concerted effort is needed in the lagging areas in order to install the required infrastructure. The emergence of plastics in the development and acceptance of e-vehicles is going to be pivotal especially when the efficiency and profitability are considered as they give the required freedom to the engineers for the design and development of various parts and sizes by replacing the bulkier and more dense materials. Also, the research on bionanocomposites has received great interest from the research community due to their versatility in application along with their eco-friendly nature throughout the lifecycle starting from feedstock up to end-of-life treatment. This review paper will be one of its kind to present a critical review of the recent developments of polymers suitable for use in e-vehicles. Also, a comprehensive discussion comprising of newer research areas for polymers in their use for e-vehicles will be presented.

Economic feasibility analysis for an electric public transportation system: Two cases of study in medium sized cities in Mexico

This work presents an economic analysis that illustrates the feasibility and the possible benefits related to the replacement of internal combustion vehicles (ICVs)by electric vehicles (EVs) public transportation in medium-sized cities. According to the current operating conditions, we calculate the cost of operating internal combustion vehicles and compare them with a selected EV with approximately the same passenger capacity. We calculate the CO2 emissions in both cases. Moreover, for the case of EV, we analyze two scenarios: 1) Use the grid to charge the EV and 2) a grid-connected photovoltaic system using the available land in the store terminals. The net present value (NPV) indicates the feasibility of two EV replacement scenarios: EV fleet using energy from the grid and EV fleet with a PV system energy generation interconnected to the grid. The economic analysis considers the different prices of electricity according to the existing tariff schemes in Mexico. Due to the electricity generation mix in Mexico, in the case of CO2 emissions, the reduction is not as expected in the only grid connection; but a PV system reduces more than 30% CO2. This analysis was carried out for two medium-sized cities: Morelia, Michoacán, and Cuernavaca, Morelos, both in Mexico.

Scenarios to Decarbonize Austria’s Energy Consumption and the Role of Underground Hydrogen Storage

The European Union is aiming at reaching greenhouse gas (GHG) emission neutrality in 2050. Austria’s current greenhouse gas emissions are 80 million t/year. Renewable Energy (REN) contributes 32% to Austria’s total energy consumption. To decarbonize energy consumption, a substantial increase in energy generation from renewable energy is required. This increase will add to the seasonality of energy supply and amplifies the seasonality in energy demand. In this paper, the seasonality of energy supply and demand in a Net-Zero Scenario are analyzed for Austria and requirements for hydrogen storage derived. We looked into the potential usage of hydrogen in Austria and the economics of hydrogen generation and technology and market developments to assess the Levelized Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH). Then, we cover the energy consumption in Austria followed by the REN potential. The results show that incremental potential of up to 140 TWh for hydropower, photovoltaic (PV), and wind exists in Austria. Hydropower generation and PV is higher in summer- than in wintertime, while wind energy leads to higher energy generation in wintertime. The largest incremental potential is PV, with agrivoltaic systems significantly increasing the area amenable for PV compared with PV usage only. Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) and Fuel Cell Vehicles (FCV) use energy more efficiently than Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) cars; however, the use of hydrogen for electricity generation significantly decreases the efficiency due to electricity–hydrogen–electricity conversion. The increase in REN use and the higher demand for energy in Austria in wintertime require seasonal storage of energy. We developed three scenarios, Externally Dependent Scenario (EDS), Balanced Energy Scenario (BES) or Self-Sustained Scenario (SSS), for Austria. The EDS scenario assumes significant REN import to Austria, whereas the SSS scenario relies on REN generation within Austria. The required hydrogen storage would be 10.82 bn m3 for EDS, 13.34 bn m3 for BES, and 18.69 bn m3 for SSS. Gas and oil production in Austria and the presence of aquifers indicates that sufficient storage capacity might be available. Significant technology development is required to be able to implement hydrogen as an energy carrier and to balance seasonal energy demand and supply.

Impact of Carbon N-Doping and Pyridinic-N Content on the Fuel Cell Performance and Durability of Carbon-Supported Pt Nanoparticle Catalysts

Cathode catalyst layers of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) typically consist of carbon-supported platinum catalysts with varying weight ratios of proton-conducting ionomers. N-Doping of carbon support materials is proposed to enhance the performance and durability of the cathode layer under operating conditions in a PEMFC. However, a detailed understanding of the contributing N-moieties is missing. Here, we report the successful synthesis and fuel cell implementation of Pt electrocatalysts supported on N-doped carbons, with a focus on the analysis of the N-induced effect on catalyst performance and durability. A customized fluidized bed reduction reactor was used to synthesize highly monodisperse Pt nanoparticles deposited on N-doped carbons (N-C), the catalytic oxygen reduction reaction activity and stability of which matched those of state-of-the-art PEMFC catalysts. Operando high-energy X-ray diffraction experiments were conducted using a fourth generation storage ring; the light of extreme brilliance and coherence allows investigating the impact of N-doping on the degradation behavior of the Pt/N-C catalysts. Tests in liquid electrolytes were compared with tests in membrane electrode assemblies in single-cell PEMFCs. Our analysis refines earlier views on the subject of N-doped carbon catalyst supports: it provides evidence that heteroatom doping and thus the incorporation of defects into the carbon backbone do not mitigate the carbon corrosion during high-potential cycling (1-1.5 V) and, however, can promote the cell performance under usual PEMFC operating conditions (0.6-0.9 V).

Flow Characteristics and Loss Models of the Transonic Radial Turbine

A hydrogen turbo hybrid power system has the significant advantages of zero carbon emissions, high efficiency and high reliability. The need to increase the power density of hydrogen turbo hybrid power systems and improve the adaptability of turbines over a wide range of expansion ratios has encouraged the study of transonic turbines. This paper is aimed at analyzing the flow characteristics and developing the loss models of a transonic turbine. The main losses for a subsonic radial turbine are usually divided into four parts: incidence loss, passage loss, tip clearance loss and trailing edge loss. Nevertheless, when the expansion ratio of a turbine is greater than about 2.6, the turbine will choke and work in transonic conditions. A shock wave will occur at the trailing edge, which will cause a lot of losses. The loss caused by the shock wave at the trailing edge is ignored by previous loss models. This paper develops a shock wave-induced loss model to predict the performance in transonic conditions more accurately. With the developed shock wave-induced loss model, the predicted efficiency deviation in transonic conditions decreases from 10% to 3.5% maximally.

Concept Review of a Cloud-Based Smart Battery Management System for Lithium-Ion Batteries: Feasibility, Logistics, and Functionality

Energy storage plays an important role in the adoption of renewable energy to help solve climate change problems. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are an excellent solution for energy storage due to their properties. In order to ensure the safety and efficient operation of LIB systems, battery management systems (BMSs) are required. The current design and functionality of BMSs suffer from a few critical drawbacks including low computational capability and limited data storage. Recently, there has been some effort in researching and developing smart BMSs utilizing the cloud platform. A cloud-based BMS would be able to solve the problems of computational capability and data storage in the current BMSs. It would also lead to more accurate and reliable battery algorithms and allow the development of other complex BMS functions. This study reviews the concept and design of cloud-based smart BMSs and provides some perspectives on their functionality and usability as well as their benefits for future battery applications. The potential division between the local and cloud functions of smart BMSs is also discussed. Cloud-based smart BMSs are expected to improve the reliability and overall performance of LIB systems, contributing to the mass adoption of renewable energy.

Hydrogen as a Clean and Sustainable Energy Vector for Global Transition from Fossil-Based to Zero-Carbon

Hydrogen is recognized as a promising and attractive energy carrier to decarbonize the sectors responsible for global warming, such as electricity production, industry, and transportation. However, although hydrogen releases only water as a result of its reaction with oxygen through a fuel cell, the hydrogen production pathway is currently a challenging issue since hydrogen is produced mainly from thermochemical processes (natural gas reforming, coal gasification). On the other hand, hydrogen production through water electrolysis has attracted a lot of attention as a means to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by using low-carbon sources such as renewable energy (solar, wind, hydro) and nuclear energy. In this context, by providing an environmentally-friendly fuel instead of the currently-used fuels (unleaded petrol, gasoline, kerosene), hydrogen can be used in various applications such as transportation (aircraft, boat, vehicle, and train), energy storage, industry, medicine, and power-to-gas. This article aims to provide an overview of the main hydrogen applications (including present and future) while examining funding and barriers to building a prosperous future for the nation by addressing all the critical challenges met in all energy sectors.

Health Cost Estimation of Traffic-Related Air Pollution and Assessing the Pollution Reduction Potential of Zero-Emission Vehicles in Toronto, Canada

Fossil fuel vehicles, emitting air toxics into the atmosphere, impose a heavy burden on the economy through additional health care expenses and ecological degradation. Air pollution is responsible for millions of deaths and chronic and acute health problems every year, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The fossil-fuel-based transportation system releases tons of toxic gases into the atmosphere putting human health at risk, especially in urban areas. This analysis aims to determine the economic burden of environmental and health impacts caused by Highway 401 traffic. Due to the high volume of vehicles driving on the Toronto Highway 401 corridor, there is an annual release of 3771 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). These emissions are mainly emitted onsite through the combustion of gasoline and diesel fuel. The integration of electric and hydrogen vehicles shows maximum reductions of 405–476 g CO2e per vehicle-kilometer. Besides these carbon dioxide emissions, there is also a large amount of hazardous air pollutants. To examine the impact of air pollution on human health, the mass and concentrations of criteria pollutants of PM2.5 and NOx emitted by passenger vehicles and commercial trucks on Highway 401 were determined using the MOVES2014b software. Then, an air dispersion model (AERMOD) was used to find the concentration of different pollutants at the receptor’s location. The increased risk of health issues was calculated using hazard ratios from literature. Finally, the health cost of air pollution from Highway 401 traffic was estimated to be CAD 416 million per year using the value of statistical life, which is significantly higher than the climate change costs of CAD 55 million per year due to air pollution.

Comparative Study of Equivalent Circuit Models Performance in Four Common Lithium-Ion Batteries: LFP, NMC, LMO, NCA

Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are an important component of energy storage systems used in various applications such as electric vehicles and portable electronics. There are many chemistries of Li-ion battery, but LFP, NMC, LMO, and NCA are four commonly used types. In order for the battery applications to operate safely and effectively, battery modeling is very important. The equivalent circuit model (ECM) is a battery model often used in the battery management system (BMS) to monitor and control Li-ion batteries. In this study, experiments were performed to investigate the performance of three different ECMs (1RC, 2RC, and 1RC with hysteresis) on four Li-ion battery chemistries (LFP, NMC, LMO, and NCA). The results indicated that all three models are usable for the four types of Li-ion chemistries, with low errors. It was also found that the ECMs tend to perform better in dynamic current profiles compared to non-dynamic ones. Overall, the best-performed model for LFP and NCA was the 1RC with hysteresis ECM, while the most suited model for NMC and LMO was the 1RC ECM. The results from this study showed that different ECMs would be suited for different Li-ion battery chemistries, which should be an important factor to be considered in real-world battery and BMS applications.
