Using Fuzzy Logic to Increase Accuracy in Mango Maturity Index Classification: Approach for Developing a Portable Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Device

Grading is a decisive step in the successful distribution of mangoes to customers according to their preferences for the maturity index. A non-destructive method using near-infrared spectroscopy has historically been used to predict the maturity of fruit. This research classifies the maturity indexes in five classes using a new approach involving classification modeling and the application of fuzzy logic and indirect classification by measuring four parameters: total acidity, soluble solids content, firmness, and starch. These four quantitative parameters provide guidelines for maturity indexes and consumer preferences. The development of portable devices uses a neo spectra micro development kit with specifications for the spectrum of 1350-2500 nm. In terms of computer technology, this study uses a Raspberry Pi and Python programming. To improve the accuracy performance, preprocessing is carried out using 12 spectral transformation operators. Next, these operators are collected and combined to achieve optimal performance. The performance of the classification model with direct and indirect approaches is then compared. Ultimately, classification of the direct approach with preprocessing using linear discriminant analysis offered an accuracy of 91.43%, and classification of the indirect approach using partial least squares with fuzzy logic had an accuracy of 95.7%.

Real-Time Temperature and Humidity Measurements during the Short-Range Distribution of Perishable Food Products as a Tool for Supply-Chain Energy Improvements

Food waste results in an increased need for production to compensate for losses. Increased production is directly related to an increase in the environmental impact of agriculture and in the energy needs associated with it. To reduce food waste, the supply chain should maintain ideal preservation conditions. In horticultural products, temperature, and relative humidity are two of the main parameters to be controlled. Monitoring these parameters can help decision-making in logistics and routes management, as well as to diagnose and timely prevent food losses. In the present work, eighteen wireless traceability devices with temperature and relative humidity sensors monitored crates with horticultural products along a short-range distribution route with five stops (4 h 30 m). Sensor data and a location tag were sent via GSM for real-time monitoring. The results showed fluctuations in temperature and relative humidity that reached up to 7.4 °C and 35.3%, respectively. These fluctuations happened mostly due to frequent door opening, operational procedures, and irregular refrigeration conditions. Furthermore, the results brought attention to a procedure that creates unnecessary temperature fluctuations and energy losses. This study highlights the importance of individual monitorization of goods, for quality control and optimization of energy efficiency along the supply chain.

A Low-Cost Collaborative Robot for Science and Education Purposes to Foster the Industry 4.0 Implementation

The evolution of information technology and the great advances in artificial intelligence are leading to a level of automation that has never been reached before. A large part of this level of automation is due to the use of robotics, which in turn ends up both hindering and accelerating the process of Industry 4.0. Industry 4.0 is driven by innovative technologies that have an effect on production systems and business models. Although technologies are the driving motors of production within Industry 4.0, many production systems require collaboration between robotics and humans, and safety is required for both parties. Given the need for robots to collaborate with humans simultaneously or in parallel, a new generation of robots, called cobots, “Collaborative Robots”, are gaining prominence to face these challenges. With cobots, it is possible to overcome security barriers and envisage working safely side-by-side with humans. This paper presents the development and testing of a low-cost, within standards, 6-axis collaborative robot that can be used for educational purposes in different task-specific applications. The development of this collaborative robot involves the design and 3D printing of the structure (connections and parts), sizing and selection of circuits and/or electronic components, programming, and control. Furthermore, this study considers the development of a user interface application with the robotic arm. Thus, the application of technological solutions, as well as of the scientific and educational approaches used in the development of cobots can foster the wide implementation of Industry 4.0.
