Abstract
Effective control of foodborne pathogen contamination is a significant challenge to the food industry, but the development of new antibacterial nanotechnologies offers new opportunities. Notably, selenium nanoparticles have been extensively studied and successfully applied in various food fields. Selenium nanoparticles act as food antibacterial agents with a number of benefits, including selenium as an essential trace element in food, prevention of drug resistance induction in foodborne pathogens, and improvement of shelf life and food storage conditions. Compared to physical and chemical methods, biogenic selenium nanoparticles (Bio-SeNPs) are safer and more multifunctional due to the bioactive molecules in Bio-SeNPs. This review includes a summarization of (1) biosynthesized of Bio-SeNPs from different sources (plant extracts, fungi and bacteria) and their antibacterial activity against various foodborne bacteria; (2) the antibacterial mechanisms of Bio-SeNPs, including penetration of cell wall, damage to cell membrane and contents leakage, inhibition of biofilm formation, and induction of oxidative stress; (3) the potential antibacterial applications of Bio-SeNPs as food packaging materials, food additives and fertilizers/feeds for crops and animals in the food industry; and (4) the cytotoxicity and animal toxicity of Bio-SeNPs. The related knowledge contributes to enhancing our understanding of Bio-SeNP applications and makes a valuable contribution to ensuring food safety.

Abstract
Lactic acid bacteria, being generally recognized as safe, are the preferred choice among other microbial producers of selenium nanoparticles. For successful production of SeNPs, it is necessary to take into account the physiological properties of the bacterium used as a biotransformer of inorganic forms of selenium in Se0. The antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of SeNPs allows to use them in the form of pure nanoparticles or biomass of lactic acid bacteria enriched with selenium in preparation of food, in agriculture, aquaculture, medicine, veterinary, and manufacturing of packing materials for food products. To attract attention to the promising new directions of lactic acid bacteria applications and to accelerate their implementation, the examples of the use of SeNPs synthesized by lactic acid bacteria in the mentioned above areas of human activity are described.

Abstract
Oral candidiasis is an opportunistic infection that affects mainly individuals with weakened immune system. Devices used in the oral area to treat this condition include buccal films, which present advantages over both oral tablets and gels. Since candidiasis causes pain, burning, and itching, the purpose of this work was to develop buccal films loaded with both lidocaine (anesthetic) and miconazole nitrate (MN, antifungal) to treat this pathology topically. MN was loaded in microparticles based on different natural polymers, and then, these microparticles were loaded in hydroxypropyl methylcellulose-gelatin-based films containing lidocaine. All developed films showed adequate adhesiveness and thickness. DSC and XRD tests suggested that the drugs were in an amorphous state in the therapeutic systems. Microparticles based on chitosan-alginate showed the highest MN encapsulation. Among the films, those containing the mentioned microparticles presented the highest tensile strength and the lowest elongation at break, possibly due to the strong interactions between both polymers. These films allowed a fast release of lidocaine and a controlled release of MN. Due to the latter, these systems showed antifungal activity for 24 h. Therefore, the treatment of oropharyngeal candidiasis with these films could reduce the number of daily applications with respect to conventional treatments.

Abstract
The rapidly growing electronic and plastic waste has become a global environmental concern. Developing advanced and environmentally safe agro-based materials is an emerging field with an enormous potential for applications in sensors and devices. Here, an agro-based material as membrane has been developed by incorporating tapioca starch and banana peel powder in polylactic acid, with uniform dispersibility and amorphous nature. The material was used for the development of electrochemical sensor for S-gene of SARS-CoV-2. Further, the membrane was used for the development of a non-invasive, colorimetric skin patch for the detection of glucose and a sensor for the assessment of fruit juice quality. Using OECD-recommended model systems, the developed membrane was found to be non-toxic towards aquatic and terrestrial non-target organisms. The developed conductive material opens new avenues in various electrochemical, analytical, and biological applications.

Abstract
A poly (lactic acid) (PLA) -based functional partition composite membrane (PLA/CA) containing chitosan (CS) and alizarin (AL) was designed by solution casting method. The PLA/CA membrane contains the antibacterial zone of the edge part (PLA/CS) and the pH response detection zone of the central part (PLA/AL). At the same time, the environmentally friendly plasticizer tributyl citrate (TBC) was added to make the prepared PLA/CA composite membrane have good flexibility and high transparency. The results of FE-SEM and FTIR showed that CS and AL were uniformly dispersed in PLA matrix and had good compatibility with PLA. The antioxidant activities of PLA/CS and PLA/AL composite films were 43.3 % and 72.8 %, respectively. At the same time, the inhibitory rates of PLA/CS membrane against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were as high as 87.91 % and 75.17 %, respectively. PLA/AL films exhibit excellent UV barrier properties. When the environmental pH (ammonia and acetic acid vapor) changed repeatedly, the PLA/AL membrane showed reversible color change of yellow under acidic condition and purple under alkaline condition. During the packaging and storage of chicken breast meat, the freshness of chicken breast meat can be detected by the color change of functional PLA/CA composite membrane.

Abstract
The polylactic acid composite films were successfully fabricated via the technique of solvent casting using cellulose acetate (20%, wt) as the reinforcing material and phenyl salicylate as the ultraviolet (UV) absorbent and antibacterial agent. Polylactic acid-cellulose acetate-phenyl salicylate composite films displayed complete absorption effect at the region of UV-C (280-100 nm) and UV-B (315-280 nm), and more than 95% UV absorption effect at the region of UV-A (400-315 nm). These results indicate that the UV shielding performance of the composite films could be significantly improve by addition of phenyl salicylate. Moreover, the addition of 20% phenyl salicylate could improve the steam resistance, mechanical properties and thermal stability of the films, and the composite films had also better antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli. The composite films could reduce the decay rate of fresh lilies and extend their storage time. The degradation characteristics of the films were explored in the natural environment and the laboratory level, which provided application prospect for the development of degradable food packaging materials with anti-ultraviolet and anti-bacteria effect.

Abstract
The derivatization of chitosan (CS) is widely exploited to endow this polysaccharide with enhanced physicochemical and biological properties. Beyond the synthetic route, the nature of the compounds used to functionalize the CS-derivatives exerts a pivotal role in their final properties. Making use of a simple "click" reaction, we synthesized for the first time an organoselenium-CS derivative through a 1,2,3-triazole formation. The product (CS-TSe) was characterized in detail by FTIR, NMR (1H, 13C, and 77Se) and UV-Vis techniques, and SEM microscopy. The antioxidant activity of CS-TSe was examined by ABTS+ and DPPH (free radical-scavenging) assays. Experimentally, it was demonstrated that CS-TSe has superior antioxidant activity compared with raw CS and "free" organoselenium compound, suggesting a benign and synergistic effect due to the derivatization. In short, the antioxidant property of CS-TSe combined with the other attractive properties of CS and selenium could be useful in the formulation of advanced materials for biomedical and packaging applications.

Abstract
Environmental problems, such as global warming and plastic pollution have forced researchers to investigate alternatives for conventional plastics. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA), one of the well-known eco-friendly biodegradables and biobased polyesters, has been studied extensively and is considered to be a promising substitute to petroleum-based polymers. This review gives an inclusive overview of the current research of lactic acid and lactide dimer techniques along with the production of PLA from its monomers. Melt polycondensation as well as ring opening polymerization techniques are discussed, and the effect of various catalysts and polymerization conditions is thoroughly presented. Reaction mechanisms are also reviewed. However, due to the competitive decomposition reactions, in the most cases low or medium molecular weight (MW) of PLA, not exceeding 20,000-50,000 g/mol, are prepared. For this reason, additional procedures such as solid state polycondensation (SSP) and chain extension (CE) reaching MW ranging from 80,000 up to 250,000 g/mol are extensively investigated here. Lastly, numerous practical applications of PLA in various fields of industry, technical challenges and limitations of PLA use as well as its future perspectives are also reported in this review.
