Nonthermal Plasma Treatment Improves Uniformity and Adherence of Cyclodextrin-Based Coatings on Hydrophobic Polymer Substrates

Surface Functionalization of Face Masks with Cold Plasma and Its Effect in Anchoring Polyphenols Extracted from Agri-Food

To improve the capability of non-woven polypropylene-based fabric (NWF-PP) used for face mask production to retain active biomolecules such as polyphenols, the surface functionalization of NWF-PP-directly cut from face masks-was carried out by employing cold plasma with oxygen. The nature/structure of the functional groups, as well as the degree of functionalization, were evaluated by ATR-FTIR and XPS by varying the experimental conditions (generator power, treatment time, and oxygen flow). The effects of plasma activation on mechanical and morphological characteristics were evaluated by stress-strain measurements and SEM analysis. The ability of functionalized NWF-PP to firmly anchor polyphenols extracted from cloves was estimated by ATR-FTIR analysis, IR imaging, extractions in physiological solution, and OIT analysis (before and after extraction), as well as by SEM analysis. All the results obtained converge in showing that, although the plasma treatment causes changes-not only on the surface-with certain detriment to the mechanical performance of the NWF-PP, the incorporated functionalities are able to retain/anchor the active molecules extracted from the cloves, thus stabilizing the treated surfaces against thermo-oxidation even after prolonged extraction.

Effect of Bacterial Cellulose Plasma Treatment on the Biological Activity of Ag Nanoparticles Deposited Using Magnetron Deposition

New functional medical materials with antibacterial activity based on biocompatible bacterial cellulose (BC) and Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were obtained. Bacterial cellulose films were prepared by stationary liquid-phase cultivation of the Gluconacetobacter hansenii strain GH-1/2008 in Hestrin-Schramm medium with glucose as a carbon source. To functionalize the surface and immobilize Ag NPs deposited by magnetron sputtering, BC films were treated with low-pressure oxygen-nitrogen plasma. The composition and structure of the nanomaterials were studied using transmission (TEM) and scanning (SEM) electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Using electron microscopy, it was shown that on the surface of the fibrils that make up the network of bacterial cellulose, Ag particles are stabilized in the form of aggregates 5-35 nm in size. The XPS C 1s spectra show that after the deposition of Ag NPs, the relative intensities of the C-OH and O-C-O bonds are significantly reduced. This may indicate the destruction of BC oxypyran rings and the oxidation of alcohol groups. In the Ag 3d_5/2 spectrum, two states at 368.4 and 369.7 eV with relative intensities of 0.86 and 0.14 are distinguished, which are assigned to Ag⁰ state and Ag acetate, respectively. Nanocomposites based on plasma-treated BC and Ag nanoparticles deposited by magnetron sputtering (BCP-Ag) exhibited antimicrobial activity against Aspergillus niger, S. aureus and Bacillus subtilis.

Plasma Modification of Carbon Coating Produced by RF CVD on Oxidized NiTi Shape Memory Alloy under Glow-Discharge Conditions

Our previous work has shown that for cardiac applications, combining low-temperature plasma oxidation with an amorphous carbon coating (a-C:N:H type) constitutes a prospective solution. In this study, a short-term modification by low-temperature oxygen plasma is proposed as an example and a method for shaping the topography and surface energy of the outer amorphous carbon coating, produced via the Radio-Frequency Chemical Vapour Deposition (RFCVD) method on NiTi alloy oxidized under glow-discharge conditions. This treatment alters the chemical composition of the outer zone of the surface layer. A slight increase is also noted in the surface roughness at the nanoscale. The contact angles were shown to increase by about 20% for water and 30% for diiodomethane, while the surface free energy decreased by ca. 11%. The obtained results indicate that even short-term contact with low-temperature plasma can shape the surface properties of the carbon coating, an outcome which shows potential in terms of its use in medical applications.
