Preparation of Silver Antibacterial Agents with Different Forms and Their Effects on the Properties of Water-Based Primer on Tilia europaea Surface

Preparation of Antibacterial Nanosilver Solution Microcapsules and Their Impact on the Performance of Andoung Wood Surface Coating

In this paper, nanosilver solution was used as an antibacterial agent to prepare antibacterial microcapsules. The mass ratio of the core material to the wall material (Wcore: Wwall), the emulsifier’s hydrophilic–lipophilic balance (HLB) value, the mass ratio of ethanol to the emulsifier in solvent (Wcore: Wemulsion), and the rotational speed (r/min) were used to develop the four-factor, three-level orthogonal experiment, which was meant to investigate the most significant factors and the optimum process preparation parameters impacting the coating rate and yield of microcapsules. It was used to make an antibacterial coating that was applied to the surface paint film of a glass substrate and andoung wood, and it was mixed to the water-based primer with a content of 4%. Analyses of the mechanical, optical, and bactericidal characteristics were conducted. The micromorphology of the nanosilver solution microcapsules is influenced by the emulsifier’s HLB value. The color difference of the antibacterial coating film decreased with increasing emulsifier HLB value; however, the coating film’s gloss remained largely suitable. Additionally, the coating film’s transparency and tensile strength both decreased. It had minimal impact on the paint film’s surface hardness, but the adhesion and tensile strength showed a noticeable downward trend. The surface of the paint film was rough. Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were resistant to the antibacterial characteristics of the water-based primer film when it was combined with antibacterial nanosilver solution microcapsules by 80.7% and 74.55%, respectively. The coating film’s antibacterial properties were applied to the surface of the andoung wood, which were 75.7% and 71.0%, respectively, and somewhat decreased. In order to successfully inhibit bacteria, the nanosilver solution microcapsules were added to waterborne coatings. This ensures both the outstanding performance of the coating film and the effectiveness of the antibacterial effect. It expands the application prospects of antibacterial microcapsules in coatings.

Silver Nanoparticles as Antifungal Agents in Acrylic Latexes: Influence of the Initiator Type on Nanoparticle Incorporation and Aureobasidium pullulans Resistance

Discoloration of wood coatings due to fungal growth negatively affects the aesthetic properties of the coatings, and new ways to control fungal growth on coatings are needed. For this reason, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been incorporated in acrylic latexes as antifungal agents. Using miniemulsion polymerization, latexes were prepared with two types of initiators (hydrophilic and hydrophobic) to assess the influence of the initiator type on AgNPs dispersion, both within the latex particles and the dry film. In addition, the impact of NP dispersion on resistance to black-stain fungi (Aureobasidium pullulans) was also evaluated. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) analysis indicates that acrylic latexes prepared with azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as the initiator contain more AgNPs than those prepared with potassium persulfate (KPS). Cryo-TEM and SEM analyses show that the distribution of the AgNPs within the polymer particles is influenced by the nature of the initiator. When AIBN, a hydrophobic initiator, is used, the AgNPs appear to be closer to the surface of the polymer particles and more evenly distributed. However, the antifungal efficiency of the AgNPs-embedded latexes against A. pullulans is found to be higher when KPS is used, despite this initiator leading to a smaller amount of incorporated AgNPs and a less uniform dispersion of the nanoparticles.

Influence of Polyvinylpyrrolidone Concentration on Properties and Anti-Bacterial Activity of Green Synthesized Silver Nanoparticles

Environmentally green synthesis of stable polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP)-capped silver nanoparticles (PVP-AgNPs) was successfully carried out. The present study focused on investigating the influence of adding PVP during the synthesis process on the size, optical properties and antibacterial effect of silver nanoparticles produced. An aqueous extract of Eucalyptus camaldulensis leaves was used as a reducing agent. The effects of different PVP concentrations and reducing time on the synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs) were characterized by UV–Vis spectrophotometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrum (EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and nano tracker analysis (NTA). The addition of PVP was studied. The prepared PVP-AgNPs were spherical with an average size of 13 nm. FTIR analysis confirmed that PVP protects AgNPs by a coordination bond between silver nanoparticles and both N and O of PVP. DLS results indicated the good dispersion of silver nanoparticles. PVP-AgNPs were found to be stable for nearly 5 months. Antibacterial studies through the agar well diffusion method confirmed that silver nanoparticles synthesized using PVP had no inhibitor activity toward Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as opposed to silver nanoparticles prepared without adding PVP, which showed a significant antibacterial activity towards some of the tested pathogens.

Durability of Acrylic Cataphoretic Coatings Additivated with Colloidal Silver

In this work, colloidal silver has been added into an acrylic clear cataphoretic bath, evaluating the effect of two different filler amounts on the durability of the composite coatings. The three series of samples were characterized by electron microscopy to assess the possible change in morphology introduced by the silver-based additive. The protective properties of the coatings were evaluated by a salt spray chamber exposure and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements, evidencing the negative effect provided by high amount of silver, which introduced discontinuities in the acrylic matrix. Finally, the durability of composite coatings was studied by exposing them to UV-B radiation, observing a strong phenomenon of silver degradation. Although the coating containing high concentrations of silver demonstrated poor durability, this study revealed that small amounts of silver can be used to provide particular aesthetic features, but also to improve the protective performance of cataphoretic coatings.

Effect of Paint Process on the Performance of Modified Poplar Wood Antique

Modified poplar wood is used as the substrate, based on the surface coating process and actual operation requirements of European and American furniture, and the painting process is studied. Four different paint coating methods are applied to modified poplar wood that has undergone different surface pretreatments. The gloss and adhesion of the coating system were measured. The difference in paint film performance of different paint finishes on the modified poplar with different surface pretreatments was discussed. The reasons were analyzed to establish the corresponding relationship between wood surface performance and paint film performance and obtain the best coating process parameters. The number of passes of nitrocellulose (NC) transparent primer was appropriately increasing, and the adhesion of the overall paint film was improved through the bonding between the films after sanding. NC transparent primer has the function of weakening the surface gloss. NC transparent topcoat has the effect of improving gloss. The proper use of PU sealing primer is beneficial to improve the gloss of the paint film, but excessive use will not produce any effect. The paint process of Group C is more suitable for the antique, old-fashioned process of European and American furniture from the perspective of the glossiness of the paint film.
