Push-Pull Heterocyclic Dyes Based on Pyrrole and Thiophene: Synthesis and Evaluation of Their Optical, Redox and Photovoltaic Properties

A first principles based prediction of electronic and nonlinear optical properties towards cyclopenta thiophene chromophores with benzothiophene acceptor moieties

In the current work, organic cyclopenta-thiophene (CPT) based derivatives (FICR and FICD1-FICD5) were designed by the modulation of end-capped acceptor group of the reference molecule i.e., FICR, to explore their nonlinear optical (NLO) response. The effect of terminal acceptor and donor groups in the tailored compounds was explored by using DFT based quantum calculations. The UV-Vis analysis, frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs), transition density matrix (TDM), natural bond orbitals (NBOs), density of states (DOS), nonlinear optical (NLO) analyses were performed at M06/6-311G(d,p) functional. The LUMO-HOMO band gaps of FICD1-FICD5 were found to be smaller (1.75-1.92 eV) comparative to FICR (1.98 eV). Moreover, the global reactivity parameters (GRPs) were correlated with the results of other analyses. FICD2 and FICD5 with lowest band gap 1.73 and 1.75 eV showed less hardness (0.86 and 0.87 eV, respectively), high softness (0.58 and 0.57 eV-1), and larger absorption spectrum (815 and 813 nm) in gaseous phase and (889 and 880 nm) in solvent phase among all entitled compounds. All the designed chromophores (FICD1-FICD5) demonstrated a significant NLO response as compared to FICR. Particularly, FICD2 and FICD5 exhibited the highest average linear polarizability (<α>) [2.86 × 10-22 and 2.88 × 10-22 esu], first hyperpolarizability (βtot) (8.43 × 10-27 and 8.35 × 10-27 esu) and second hyperpolarizability (γtot) (13.20 × 10-32 and 13.0 × 10-32 esu) values as compared to the other derivatives. In nutshell, structural modeling of CPT based chromophores with extended acceptors, can be significantly utilized to achieve potential NLO materials.

Azaphosphinines and their derivatives

Six-membered heterocycles containing one phosphorus and one nitrogen atom, known as azaphosphinines, have existed in the shadows of their single heteroatom-containing analogues for almost 150 years. Despite this, recent chemistry has seen a rapid increase in publications concerning this uncommon scaffold. Azaphosphinines exist in one of six isomers-there are three possible orientations of the pnictogen atoms and in each of these, the phosphorus is in one of two valences (PIIIvs. PV). This review aims to outline and inform on the synthesis and applications of all six isomers. PV-oxo azaphosphinines are of particular interest to this review as many of the discussed heterocycles either form as the pentavalent species directly or oxidize to this over time. In very recent years the published applications of azaphosphinines have blossomed into subjects spanning several fields of chemistry such as asymmetric catalysis, supramolecular association, cellular imaging, and medicinal chemistry.

Thienothiophene Scaffolds as Building Blocks for (Opto)Electronics

Thieno[3,2-b]thiophene and isomeric thieno[2,3-b]thiophene represent fused, bicyclic and electron rich heterocycles. These small planar organic compounds belong to the remarkable family of annulated building blocks for various organic materials. The first part of this review focuses on the synthesis of the primary unsubstituted thienothiophene scaffolds. All synthetic pathways available in the literature, dating from the 19th century, are summarized. The second part is devoted to the applications of the thienothiophene-derived materials across (opto)electronics. Organic light emitting diodes, organic solar cells, organic field-effect transistors and nonlinear optics were identified as the most successful application areas of both thienothiophenes. The fundamental structure-property relationships were evaluated for each particular group of derivatives.

New organic dye-sensitized solar cells based on the D-A-π-A structure for efficient DSSCs: DFT/TD-DFT investigations

Global energy consumption has increased due to population growth and economic development. Solar energy is one of the most important renewable energy sources for human consumption. In this research, four novel organic dyes (D2-D5) of the D-A-π-A structure based on triphenylamine (TPA) were studied theoretically using DFT and TD-DFT techniques for future usage as dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The effects of modifying the π-spacer of the reference molecule D1 on the structural, electronic, photovoltaic, and optical characteristics of the D2-D5 dyes were studied in detail. D2-D5 exhibited band gaps (E _gap) in the range from 1.89 to 2.10 eV with λ _abs in the range of 508 to 563 nm. The results obtained show that modifying the π-spacer of the dye D1 increased its hole injection and reinforced the intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) impact, which resulted in a red-shifted ICT absorption with a greater molar extinction coefficient. The theoretically calculated open-circuit voltage (V _oc) values ranged from 0.69 to 1.06 eV, while the light-harvesting efficiency (LHE) values varied from 0.95 to 0.99. Indeed, this theoretical research could guide chemists to synthesize effective dyes for DSSCs.
