Nanofiber Polymers for Coating Titanium-Based Biomedical Implants

The excellent combination of properties has seen a steep increase in the demand for titanium (Ti)-based material as biomedical implant devices. However, some features that promote biocompatibility are found to be lacking in Ti implants. The use of polymer nanofiber (NF) coating on the surfaces of the implants has been proven to remedy these setbacks. In particular, electrospun NFs are versatile as natural extracellular matrix mimics and as facilitators in the biocompatibility function of Ti-based implants. Therefore, various properties of Ti implants coated with polymer NFs and the correlations among these properties are explored in this review. Synthetic polymers are favorable in tissue engineering applications because they are biocompatible and have low toxicity and degradation rates. Several approved synthetic polymers and polymer hybrids have been electrospun onto Ti implant surfaces to successfully improve the biomedical applicability of the implants with regard to their physical (including diameter and porosity), chemical (including corrosion resistance), mechanical (including elastic modulus, strength and ductility) and biological properties (including tissue integration, antimicrobial and cytotoxicity).

Superhydrophilic multifunctional nanotextured titanium dental implants: in vivo short and long-term response in a porcine model

Current clinical demand in dental implantology is for a multifunctional device with optimum mechanical properties, improved biocompatibility and bioactivity, and having differential interactions with cells and pathogenic agents. This would minimise bacterial infection, biofilm formation and modulate inflammation, leading to a fast and durable osseointegration. The present study intends to establish the multifunctional behaviour of surface modified titanium dental implants that are superhydrophilic, with unique micro-nano or nanoscale topographies, developed by a facile hydrothermal technique. Here, the short and long-term performances of these textured implants are tested in a split mouth design using a porcine model, in pre- and post-loaded states. Quantitative and qualitative analyses of the bone implant interphase are performed through μ-CT and histology. Parameters that evaluate bone mineral density, bone contact volume and bone implant contact reveal enhanced bone apposition with better long-term response for the nano and micro-nano textured surfaces, compared to the commercial microtextured implant. Concurrently, the nanoscale surface features on implants reduced bacterial attachment by nearly 90% in vivo, outperforming the commercial variant. This preclinical evaluation data thus reveal the superiority of nano/micro-nano textured designs for clinical application and substantiate their improved osseointegration and reduced bacterial adhesion, thus proposing a novel dental implant with multifunctional characteristics.

Recent Developments in Coatings for Orthopedic Metallic Implants

Titanium, stainless steel, and CoCrMo alloys are the most widely used biomaterials for orthopedic applications. The most common causes of orthopedic implant failure after implantation are infections, inflammatory response, least corrosion resistance, mismatch in elastic modulus, stress shielding, and excessive wear. To address the problems associated with implant materials, different modifications related to design, materials, and surface have been developed. Among the different methods, coating is an effective method to improve the performance of implant materials. In this article, a comprehensive review of recent studies has been carried out to summarize the impact of coating materials on metallic implants. The antibacterial characteristics, biodegradability, biocompatibility, corrosion behavior, and mechanical properties for performance evaluation are briefly summarized. Different effective coating techniques, coating materials, and additives have been summarized. The results are useful to produce the coating with optimized properties.

Moxifloxacin-loaded in situ synthesized Bioceramic/Poly(L-lactide-co-ε-caprolactone) composite scaffolds for treatment of osteomyelitis and orthopedic regeneration

High local intraosseous levels of antimicrobial agents are required for adequate long-term treatment of chronic osteomyelitis (OM). In this study, biodegradable composite scaffolds of poly-lactide-co-ε-caprolactone/calcium phosphate (CaP) were in-situ synthesized using two different polymer grades and synthesis pathways and compared to composites prepared by pre-formed (commercially available) CaP for delivery of the antibiotic moxifloxacin hydrochloride (MOX). Phase identification and characterization by Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) confirmed the successful formation of different CaP phases within the biodegradable polymer matrix. The selected in-situ formed CaP scaffold showed a sustained release for MOX for six weeks and adequate porosity. Cell viability study on MG-63 osteoblast-like cells revealed that the selected composite scaffold maintained the cellular proliferation and differentiation. Moreover, it was able to diminish the bacterial load, inflammation and sequestrum formation in the bones of OM-induced animals. The results of the present work deduce that the selected in-situ formed CaP composite scaffold is a propitious candidate for OM treatment, and further clinical experiments are recommended.

Sandblasted and Acid Etched Titanium Dental Implant Surfaces Systematic Review and Confocal Microscopy Evaluation

The field of dental implantology has made progress in recent years, allowing safer and predictable oral rehabilitations. Surely the rehabilitation times have also been reduced, thanks to the advent of the new implant surfaces, which favour the osseointegration phases and allow the clinician to rehabilitate their patients earlier. To carry out this study, a search was conducted in the Pubmed, Embase and Elsevier databases; the articles initially obtained according to the keywords used numbered 283, and then subsequently reduced to 10 once the inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied. The review that has been carried out on this type of surface allows us to fully understand the features and above all to evaluate all the advantages or not related. The study materials also are supported by a manufacturing company, which provided all the indications regarding surface treatment and confocal microscopy scans. In conclusion, we can say that, thanks to these new surfaces, it has been possible to shorten the time necessary to obtain osseointegration and, therefore, secondary stability on the part of implants. The surfaces, therefore, guarantee an improved cellular adhesion and thanks to the excellent wettability all the biological processes that derive from it, such as increases in the exposed implant surface, resulting in an increase in bone-implant contact (BIC).
