Effect of High-Temperature Calcined Wheat Straw Powder after Lignin Removal on Properties of Waterborne Wood Coatings

Improving the decorative performance of UV-curable coatings with iridescent cellulose nanocrystal film

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) possess remarkable mechanical properties, a high aspect ratio, a large specific surface area, and a unique nanostructure, making them a popular choice in various fields. In this study, a CNC suspension was prepared through acid hydrolysis, and subsequently, a film exhibiting iridescence and chiral nematic structure was formed on the cured UV-WA surface via evaporation-induced self-assembly. The mean diameter and length of CNC were determined to be 25.1-33.3 nm and 281.3-404.2 nm, respectively, through transmission electron microscope analysis. The experimental results revealed that the color of the film significantly changes with variations in the CNC suspension concentration. Notably, the formation of the iridescent film is dependent on the concentration of CNC, with concentrations between 1.2% and 2.9% being optimal, and the aspect ratio of the CNC nanoparticles being around 11.3. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that the CNC nanoparticles possess the same crystal structure as microcrystalline cellulose (cellulose I). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that the C[double bond, length as m-dash]C bond present in the liquid UV-curable coating disappeared upon UV irradiation. The performance of the CNC iridescent film, with varying thickness, was evaluated using UV-vis spectroscopy. The thermogravimetric analysis results indicate that the addition of CNC enhances the membrane's thermal stability and heat resistance. The results indicate that as the thickness of the CNC iridescent film increases, the corresponding UV-vis spectra display a redshift. The UV-WA/CNC shows potential in the field of decoration and establishing a straightforward, cost-effective, and efficient method for producing photonic materials with structural colors.

Effects of Low-Energy-Density Microwave Treatment on Graphene/Polyvinyl Alcohol-Modified Poplar Veneer

The combination of natural wood and graphene can provide a new type of material with excellent mechanical properties and thermal conductivity. However, it is difficult for graphene to uniformly penetrate the wood due to the anisotropy of natural wood and the agglomeration of graphene. In this work, poplar veneer was treated with low-energy-density microwave to expand the entry pathways for the graphene steering liquid. The porosity, weight percent gain, and chromatic aberration were used to examine the impact of the microwave time and power. We tested the mechanical properties, thermal conductivity of the graphene/polyvinyl alcohol-modified poplar veneer to evaluate its properties. At the same time, SEM, XRD, and FT-IR were used to characterize its physical and chemical structure. The results showed that low-energy-density microwave treatment increased the weight percentage gain (WPG) and porosity without affecting the mechanical properties of the poplar veneer. The graphene-modified poplar veneer with the optimal overall performance was obtained by microwave treatment at 100% microwave power for 50 s. Indeed, the micro-characterization also revealed that the microwave treatment mostly attacked the wood rays but had little effect on the materialized structure. Therefore, low-energy-density microwave treatment could be an energy-saving and efficient way to improve graphene-impregnated veneers.

Trends in Chemical Wood Surface Improvements and Modifications: A Review of the Last Five Years

Increasing the use of wood in buildings is regarded by many as a key solution to tackle climate change. For this reason, a lot of research is carried out to develop new and innovative wood surface improvements and make wood more appealing through features such as increased durability, fire-retardancy, superhydrophobicity, and self-healing. However, in order to have a positive impact on the society, these surface improvements must be applied in real buildings. In this review, the last five years of research in the domain of wood surface improvements and modifications is first presented by sorting the latest innovations into different trends. Afterward, these trends are correlated to specifications representing different normative, ecologic and economic factors which must be considered when expecting to introduce a wood treatment to the market. With this review, the authors hope to help researchers to take into consideration the different factors influencing whether new innovations can leave the research laboratory or not, and thereby facilitate the introduction of new wood surface treatments in the society.

Fabrication of Coatings with Structural Color on a Wood Surface

A facile method for the fabrication of colloidal photonic crystal coatings with tunable structural color on a wood surface was presented. The photonic crystal coatings were formed from monodisperse latex spheres composed of poly(styrene-methyl methacrylate-acrylic acid) (P(St-MMA-AA)). The latex spheres with a hard PSt core and elastomeric P(MMA-AA) shell were prepared using the emulsion polymerization method. The sessile drop method, a rapid single-step self-assembly method through simple evaporation of emulsion, was used to form three-dimensional colloidal crystals. Coatings with brilliant colors and uniform Bragg’s diffraction covering the entire visible region were fabricated by controlling the sphere size. This simple method provided new insight into the development of wood color embellishment.

Influence of Thermochromic Pigment Powder on Properties of Waterborne Primer Film for Chinese Fir

This study chose organic thermochromic pigment powder and waterborne wood primer as the paint base, and Chinese fir board as the substrate to prepare thermochromic waterborne coatings with different concentrations of thermochromic pigment powder. The best concentration of thermochromic pigment powder for waterborne primer film on Chinese fir surface was explored. The experimental results showed that the color-changing property of the primer film was the best when the concentration of pigment powder in primer film was 5.0%–10%. There was a negative correlation between the gloss of the primer and the concentration of pigment powder. The gloss of the primer film was the highest when the concentration of pigment powder was 5%. When the concentration of pigment powder is 0%–20% and 25.0%–30%, the adhesion of the coating is grade 0 and grade 1, respectively. The resistance to the impact of primer film increased with the increase of concentration of pigment powder, but the resistance to the impact of primer film with 0%–30% of thermochromic pigment powder concentration was similar. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the higher the concentration of thermochromic pigment powder, the more particles and agglomeration. When the concentration of pigment powder was 5%, the distribution of particles was uniform and no agglomeration, and the microstructure of primer film was the best. Infrared spectroscopy showed that there was no difference in the composition of the paint film from 0% to 30%. The results showed that the comprehensive property of waterborne primer film on Chinese fir was better when the pigment concentration was 5%. Waterborne thermochromic primer film provides a potential application for the development of intelligent furniture in different temperature ranges.

The Effect of Glass Fiber Powder on the Properties of Waterborne Coatings with Thermochromic Ink on a Chinese Fir Surface

In this study, the effect of glass fiber powder on the properties of waterborne coatings with thermochromic ink was investigated, using Chinese fir board as the base material and temperature-sensitive thermochromic waterborne coatings with thermochromic ink as the paint base. The concentration of glass fiber powder was determined when the microstructure, optical properties, mechanical properties, liquid resistance, and heat preservation effect were the best. The results showed that the paint film with glass fiber powder concentration of 1.0% to 7.0% had better discoloration performance. With an increase of the glass fiber powder concentration, the gloss of the paint film decreased gradually, and when the concentration of glass fiber powder was 0% to 5.0%, the gloss of the paint film was better. The concentration of glass fiber powder had no effect on the adhesion, impact resistance, and liquid resistance. In the first 2.5 min, the temperature value of the waterborne coating with 3.0% glass fiber powder was higher than that without glass fiber powder, which has a certain heat preservation effect. When the glass fiber powder content was 3.0%, the microstructure of paint film was the best. The composition of paint film with different glass fiber powder concentrations was not different and the discoloration performance of paint film with heat preservation effect was not affected by time. The analysis showed that the waterborne coating with 3.0% glass fiber powder had the best comprehensive performance. This work provides a technical reference for the industrialization of heat preservation and thermochromic coating on wood.

The Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Poplar Catkin Fibers Evaluated by Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) and Nanoindentation

In this study, the microstructure and mechanical properties of poplar (Populus tomentosa) catkin fibers (PCFs) were investigated using field emission scanning electron microscope, atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction, and nanoindentation methods. Experimental results indicated that PCFs had a thin-wall cell structure with a large cell lumen and the hollow part of the cell wall took up 80 percent of the whole cell wall. The average diameters of the fiber and cell lumen, and the cell wall thickness were 5.2, 4.2, and 0.5 µm, respectively. The crystallinity of fibers was 32%. The AFM images showed that the orientation of microfibrils in cell walls was irregular and their average diameters were almost between 20.6–20.8 nm after being treated with 2 and 5 wt.% potassium hydroxide (KOH), respectively. According to the test of nanoindentation, the average longitudinal-reduced elastic modulus of the PCF S2 layer was 5.28 GPa and the hardness was 0.25 GPa.

Effect of the Concentration of Pigment Slurry on the Film Performances of Waterborne Wood Coatings

Wood surface decoration and protection has become a topic of public concern. In this paper, a temperature-sensitive and reversible thermochromic waterborne wood coating was prepared by using Chinese fir board as the base material and a waterborne wood coating with the pigment slurry of thermochromic microcapsules as the paint base. The optical properties, mechanical properties and chemical resistance of the waterborne wood coating were tested, and its microstructure was analyzed. The results showed that when the concentration of thermochromic pigment slurry was 30.0%, the thermochromic property of the waterborne wood coating was best. The gloss of the waterborne wood coating with 15.0% pigment slurry of thermochromic microcapsules was high. The concentration of thermochromic pigment slurry had no effect on the adhesion, impact resistance, or chemical resistance of the waterborne wood coating. Based on the above results, the waterborne wood coating on Chinese fir had the best comprehensive performance when the concentration of thermochromic pigment slurry was 15.0%. This work will provide a technical reference for the industrialization of the thermochromic coating film on wood.
