Washing Durability and Photo-Stability of NanoTiO2-SiO2 Coatings Exhausted onto Cotton and Cotton/Polyester Fabrics

Rapid Probing of Self-Cleaning Activity on Polyester Coated by Titania-Natural Silica Nanocomposite Using Digital Image-Based Colorimetry

Titania-silica nanocomposites (TiO₂-SiO₂) show outstanding performance and is very well applied in photocatalysis. In this research, SiO₂ extracted from Bengkulu beach sand will be used as a supporting material of the TiO₂ photocatalyst for application to polyester fabrics. TiO₂-SiO₂ nanocomposite photocatalysts were synthesized using the sonochemical method. The coating of the TiO₂-SiO₂ material on polyester was carried out using the sol-gel-assisted sonochemistry method. The method of determining self-cleaning activity uses a digital image-based colorimetric (DIC) method, which is much simpler than using an analytical instrument. The scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy results showed that the sample particles adhered to the fabric surface and the best particle distribution was shown in pure SiO₂ and 1:0.5 TiO₂-SiO₂ nanocomposites. Analysis of Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy proved the presence of Ti-O and Si-O bonds as well as the typical spectrum of polyester, which indicated that the fabric had been successfully coated with nanocomposite particles. The analysis of the contact angle of the liquid on the polyester surface showed a significant change in the properties of the TiO₂ and SiO₂ pure coated fabrics, but changes occur only slightly in the other samples. Self-cleaning activity against the degradation of methylene blue dye has been successfully carried out using DIC measurement. The test results showed that the best self-cleaning activity was shown by TiO₂-SiO₂ nanocomposite with a ratio of 1:0.5 with the degradation ratio reaching 96.8%. Furthermore, the self-cleaning property remains after the washing process, which shows excellent washing resistance.

Dopamine-Assisted Modification of Polypropylene Film to Attain Hydrophilic Mineral-Rich Surfaces

The presented study focuses on the modification of polypropylene (PP) film with tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) under heterogeneous conditions via polydopamine/polyethylene imine (PDA/PEI) chemistry using a facile dip-coating procedure to attain hydrophilic mineral-rich surfaces. Thus, the resulting PP-based films were further immersed in ion-rich simulated body fluid (SBF) to deposit Ca-based minerals onto the film's surfaces efficiently. In addition, the chemical reaction mechanism on PP film was proposed, and mineralisation potential inspected by determination of functional groups of deposits, zeta potential, hydrophilicity and surface morphology/topography using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, streaming potential, water contact angle (WCA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The obtained results show the improved wettability of samples on account of PDA inclusion (WCA was reduced from 103° for pure PP film to 28° for PDA-modified film), as well as the presence of functional groups, due to the PDA/PEI/TEOS surface functionalisation, increased the ability of minerals to nucleate on the PP film's surface when it was exposed to an SBF medium. Moreover, the higher surface roughness due to the silica coatings influenced the enhanced anchoring and attachment of calcium phosphate (CaP), revealing the potential of such a facile approach to modify the chemically inert PP films, being of particular interest in different fields, including regenerative medicine.

Modification of Cotton and Leather Surfaces Using Cold Atmospheric Pressure Plasma and TiO2-SiO2-Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanopowders

Surface modification of textile fabrics and leathers is very versatile and allows the products quality improvement. In this work, cotton and leather substrates were pre-treated with cold atmospheric pressure plasma (CAPP) and further coated with TiO₂-SiO₂-reduced graphene oxide composites in dispersion form. By using a Taguchi scheme, this research evaluated the effect of three significant parameters, i.e., the pre-treatment with CAPP, organic dispersion coating and TiO₂-SiO₂-reduced graphene oxide (TS/GR) composites, that may affect the morpho-structural properties and photocatalytic activity of modified cotton and leather surfaces. The characteristics of cotton/leather surfaces were evaluated by morphological, structural, optical and self-cleaning ability using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), attenuated total reflection-Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The self-cleaning performance of the obtained cotton and leather samples was evaluated by photocatalytic discoloration of berry juice surface stains under UV light irradiation for 12 h. The successfulness of coating formulations was proven by the SEM analysis and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The XRD patterns and ATR-FTIR spectra revealed the cellulose and collagen structures as dominant components of cotton and leather substrates. The CAPP treatment did not damage the cotton and leather structures. The photocatalytic results highlighted the potential of TiO₂-SiO₂-reduced graphene oxide composites in organic dispersion media, as coating formulations, for further use in the fabrication of innovative self-cleaning photocatalytic cotton and leather products.
