Gallate-Based Metal–Organic Frameworks, a New Family of Hybrid Materials and Their Applications: A Review

Selective extraction of apixaban from plasma by dispersive solid-phase microextraction using magnetic metal organic framework combined with molecularly imprinted polymer nanocomposite

This research aims to synthesize a specific and efficient sorbent to use in the extraction of apixaban from human plasma samples and its determination by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. High specific surface area of metal-organic framework, magnetic property of iron oxide nanoparticles, selectively of molecular imprinted polymer toward the analyte, and the combination of dispersive solid-phase extraction method with a sensitive analysis system provided an efficient analytical method. In this study, first, a molecularly imprinted polymer combined with magnetic metal organic framework nanocomposite was prepared and then characterized using different techniques. Then the sorbent particles were used for selective extraction of the analyte from plasma samples. The efficiency of the method was improved by optimizing effective parameters. According to the validation results, wide linear range (1.02-200 ng mL-1 ), acceptable coefficient of determination (0.9938), low limit of detection (0.32 ng mL-1 ) and limit of quantification (1.02 ng mL-1 ), high extraction recovery (78%), and good precision (relative standard deviations ≤ 2.9% for intra- (n = 6) and interday (n = 6) precisions) were obtainable using the proposed method. These outcomes showed the high potential of the proposed method for screening apixaban in the human plasma samples.

Optimization and Synthesis of a La-TMA MOF with Some Improvements in Its Properties

A La-TMA metal-organic framework (MOF) made up of benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate and La(III) was synthesized by a different methodology compared to those in previous reports. By using various approaches, the structural characteristics and physical properties of the La-TMA MOF were analyzed. Eventually, the results showed micro-hexagonal hollow tubes with a high crystallinity grade and thermal stability (up to 400 °C) and a higher surface area compared with those from earlier reports. The BET surface area of a similar previous MOF was about 14.8 m²/g; however, in the current project, the BET surface area increased to about 34.49 m²/g and the Langmuir surface area to 42.3 m²/g.

Tailoring biocompatibility of composite scaffolds of collagen/guar gum with metal-organic frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are microporous materials with high potential for biomedical applications. They are useful as drug delivery systems, antibacterials, and biosensors. Recently, composite materials comprised of polymer matrixes and MOFs have gained relevance in the biomedical field due to their high potential as materials to accelerate wound healing. In this work, we studied the potential applications of composite hydrogels containing MgMOF74, CaMOF74, and Zn(Atz)(Py). The composite hydrogels are biodegradable, being completely degraded after 15 days by the action of collagenase and papain. The composites showed high biocompatibility reaching cell viabilities up to 165.3 ± 8.6% and 112.3 ± 12.8% for porcine fibroblasts and human monocytes, respectively. The composites did not show hemolytic character and they showed antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli reaching up to 84 ± 5% of inhibition compared with amoxicillin (20 ppm). Further, the immunological assays revealed that the composites produce a favorable cell signaling stimulating the secretion of the TGF-β and MCP-1 cytokines and maintaining the secretion of TNF-α in normal levels. Finally, the composites showed potential to be used as controlled drug delivery systems reaching a release efficiency of 30.5 ± 2.5% for ketorolac. Finally, results revealed that ColGG-Zn(Atz)(Py) was the best formulation evaluated.

Electrosorption of cadmium ions in aqueous solutions using a copper-gallate metal-organic framework

Recently, there is a recognized need for green technologies for the effective decontamination of toxic heavy metal ions in wastewater. This study demonstrates the electrochemically assisted uptake and release of cadmium ions (Cd²⁺) using a redox-active Cu-based metal-organic framework (MOF) electrode. Copper gallate (CuGA), which was synthesized in an aqueous solution, is a water-stable and cost-effective MOF adsorbent in which naturally abundant gallic acid is used as a linker. This work utilized copper within the CuGA structure as a redox center to attract Cd²⁺ by means of Cu²⁺/Cu⁺ reduction, exhibiting rapid uptake kinetics and a much higher capacity (>60 mg g^-1) compared to the case without electrochemical assistance (~15 mg g^-1). In addition, by applying an opposite overpotential to induce the re-oxidation of copper, the facile recovery of Cd²⁺ and the regeneration of the electrode were possible without regenerants. Physicochemical characterizations including XPS were conducted to investigate the chemical oxidation states and stability of the electrode after the effective electrosorption-regeneration process. This work presents the feasibility of a Cu-based MOF electrode as a reusable platform for the efficient removal of Cd²⁺, supporting the continued discovery and development of new Faradaic electrodes for electrochemical wastewater treatments.
