Fabrication of Metal (Cu and Cr) Incorporated Nickel Oxide Films for Electrochemical Oxidation of Methanol

Electrocatalytic Performance of MnMoO4-rGO Nano-Electrocatalyst for Methanol and Ethanol Oxidation

Today, finding low-cost electro-catalysts for methanol and ethanol oxidation with high performance and stability is one of the new research topics. A nanocatalyst based on metal oxides in the form of MnMoO₄ was synthesized by a hydrothermal method for methanol (MOR) and ethanol (EOR) oxidation reactions. Adding reduced graphene oxide (rGO) to the catalyst structure improved the electrocatalytic activity of MnMoO₄ for the oxidation processes. The crystal structure and morphology of the MnMoO₄ and MnMoO₄-rGO nanocatalysts were investigated by physical analyses such as scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Their abilities for MOR and EOR processes in an alkaline medium were evaluated by performing electrochemical tests such as cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. MnMoO₄-rGO showed oxidation current densities of 60.59 and 25.39 mA/cm² and peak potentials of 0.62 and 0.67 V in MOR and EOR processes (at a scan rate of 40 mV/s), respectively. Moreover, stabilities of 91.7% in MOR and 88.6% in EOR processes were obtained from the chronoamperometry analysis within 6 h. All these features make MnMoO₄-rGO a promising electrochemical catalyst for the oxidation of alcohols.

Flower-like Layered NiCu-LDH/MXene Nanocomposites as an Anodic Material for Electrocatalytic Oxidation of Methanol

Direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) technology has grabbed much attention from researchers worldwide in the realm of green and renewable energy-generating technologies. Practical applications of DMFCs are marked by the development of highly active, efficient, economical, and long-lasting anode catalysts. Layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanohybrids are found to be efficient electrode materials for methanol oxidation. In this study, we synthesized NiCu-LDH/MXene nanocomposites (NCMs) and investigated their electrochemical performance for methanol oxidation. The formation of NCM was verified through field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. The cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and electron impedance spectroscopy techniques were carried out to assess the electrocatalytic ability of the methanol oxidation reaction. The incorporation of MXene enhanced the methanol oxidation 2-fold times higher than NiCu-LDH. NCM-45 exhibited high peak current density (86.9 mA cm^-2), enhanced electrochemical active surface area (7.625 cm²), and long-term stability (77.8% retention after 500 cycles). The superior performance of NCM can be attributed to the synergistic effect between Ni and Cu and, further, the electronic coupling between LDH and MXene. Based on the results, NCM nanocomposite is an efficient anodic material for the electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol. This study will open the door for the development of various LDH/MXene nanocomposite electrode materials for the application of direct methanol fuel cells.

Effects of Substrate Temperature on Nanomechanical Properties of Pulsed Laser Deposited Bi2Te3 Films

The correlations among microstructure, surface morphology, hardness, and elastic modulus of Bi2Te3 thin films deposited on c-plane sapphire substrates by pulsed laser deposition are investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy are used to characterize the microstructures of the Bi2Te3 thin films. The XRD analyses revealed that the Bi2Te3 thin films were highly (00l)-oriented and exhibited progressively improved crystallinity when the substrate temperature (TS) increased. The hardness and elastic modulus of the Bi2Te3 thin films determined by nanoindentation operated with the continuous contact stiffness measurement (CSM) mode are both substantially larger than those reported for bulk samples, albeit both decrease monotonically with increasing crystallite size and follow the Hall—Petch relation closely. Moreover, the Berkovich nanoindentation-induced crack exhibited trans-granular cracking behaviors for all films investigated. The fracture toughness was significantly higher for films deposited at the lower TS; meanwhile, the fracture energy was almost the same when the crystallite size was suppressed, which indicated a prominent role of grain boundary in governing the deformation characteristics of the present Bi2Te3 films.

An Electrochemical Investigation of Methanol Oxidation on Thin Films of Nickel Oxide and Its Composites with Zirconium and Yttrium Oxides

The present work is focused on the fabrication of NiO-ZrO2/FTO and NiO-Y2O3/FTO thin films via a simple dip-coating method. The films are deposited from precursor solutions of Ni(CH3COO)2·2H2O, Zr(CH3COO)4, Y(CH3COO)3·H2O in methanol. The synthesized films, after proper characterization, are employed for electrochemical oxidation of methanol. The analytical techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman, and Infrared (IR) spectroscopy reveal the successful formation of crystalline thin films of mixed metal oxide without any additional impurities. Further, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results, confirm the composition and oxidation state of all the elements present in thin films. The field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) further aided to identify the uniformity and porous nature of composite thin films while the energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) confirms the targeted elemental composition of the prepared thin films is in good agreement with precursors. The electrochemical oxidation of methanol results reveals that NiO-Y2O3/FTO and NiO-ZrO2/FTO thin films showed current densities of 6.2 mA/cm2 and 10 mA/cm2 at 0.65 V, respectively, against Ag/AgCl/3M KCl using 0.6 M methanol solution. Furthermore, Chronoamperometric (CA) results show good stability of NiO-ZrO2/FTO and NiO-Y2O3/FTO thin films with observed current decay of 10% and 6.8% of the initial current density, respectively. Moreover, the effect of scan rate and concentration of metals in a catalyst was also investigated. The Electrochemical impedance studies (EIS) further support electrochemical results, where the lower charge transfer resistance (Rct) values are recorded for composite thin films as compared to the pure metal oxide thin films (NiO/FTO, ZrO2/FTO, and Y2O3/FTO).
