Light-Triggered Formation of Surface Topographies in Azo Polymers

Polymerisation of twist-bend nematic textures for electro-optical applications

Polymer-stabilised liquid crystals (PSLCs) have recently been used to maintain the focal conic domains (FCDs) typical of the smectic A phase in the nematic phase for smart window applications. The newly discovered twist-bend nematic phase of bent-shaped dimers also exhibits FCDs due to its pseudo-layered structure. The variety of topological defects in the NTB phase is arguably even greater than in the smectic A phase, but the NTB phase is often metastable and usually crystallises at room temperature, which hinders its use in electro-optical applications. Here we show how different textures (FCDs, rope-like texture, double helices) of the NTB phase can be polymerised and then maintained in the nematic phase, at room temperature. This allows us to combine in PSLCs the optical properties of these defects, the thermal stability of the nematic phase and its reversible response to an electric field. We also show that the polymerised FCDs of the NTB phase could be used in smart glass applications and that the polymerised rope-like texture could be of interest for optical modulators and beam steering. In addition, the polymerisation of double helices could help to better understand their formation and structure in the NTB phase. More fundamentally, our work shows that despite the lack of density modulation, the textures of the NTB phase, thanks to its periodic character, can be exploited in the same way as those of the smectic A phase.

Understanding the formation of surface relief gratings in azopolymers: A combined molecular dynamics and experimental study

The formation of surface relief gratings in thin azopolymeric films is investigated using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations and compared to experimental results for the specific case of poly-disperse-orange3-methyl-methacrylate. For this purpose, the film is illuminated with a light pattern of alternating bright and dark stripes in both cases. The simulations use a molecular mechanics switching potential to explicitly describe the photoisomerization dynamics between the E and Z isomers of the azo-units and take into account the orientation of the transition dipole moment with respect to the light polarization. Local heating and elevation of the illuminated regions with the subsequent movement of molecules into the neighboring dark regions are observed. This leads to the formation of valleys in the bright areas after re-cooling and is independent of the polarization direction. To verify these observations experimentally, the azopolymer film is illuminated with bright stripes of varying width using a spatial light modulator. Atomic force microscopy images confirm that the elevated areas correspond to the previously dark areas. In the experiment, the polarization of the incident light makes only a small difference since tiny grain-like structures form in the valleys only when the polarization is parallel to the stripes.

Multiscale Hierarchical Surface Patterns by Coupling Optical Patterning and Thermal Shrinkage

Herein, a simple hierarchical surface patterning method is presented by effectively combining buckling instability and azopolymer-based surface relief grating inscription. In this technique, submicron patterns are achieved using azopolymers, whereas the microscale patterns are fabricated by subsequent thermal shrinkage. The wetting characterization of various topographically patterned surfaces confirms that the method permits tuning of contact angles and choosing between isotropic and anisotropic wetting. Altogether, this method allows efficient fabrication of hierarchical surfaces over several length scales in relatively large areas, overcoming some limitations of fabricating multiscale roughness in lithography and also methods of creating merely random patterns, such as black silicon processing or wet etching of metals. The demonstrated fine-tuning of the surface patterns may be useful in optimizing surface-related material properties, such as wetting and adhesion, producing substrates that are of potential interest in mechanobiology and tissue engineering.

Tunable narrowband plasmonic light emission from metallic crossed surface relief gratings

Plasmonic crossed surface relief gratings were fabricated using interference lithography. Their topographies were studied by AFM as a function of laser exposure time and their surface plasmon resonance at a gold-air interface was measured between crossed polarizers in transmission and in reflection modes. Both modes resulted in emitted plasmonic light at specific wavelengths related to the grating pitch, with the reflectance SPR having a much higher intensity than the transmittance SPR. The use of these gratings as plasmonic sensors was examined and their sensitivities were measured in the reflectance and transmittance modes to be 601 nm/RIU and 589 nm/RIU, respectively.

Effect of hydrogen-bond strength on photoresponsive properties of polymer-azobenzene complexes

Supramolecular complexation between photoresponsive azobenzene chromophores and a photopassive polymer host offers synthetic and design advantages compared with conventional covalent azo-containing polymers. In this context, it is important to understand the impact of the strength of the supramolecular interaction on the optical response. Herein, we study the effect of hydrogen-bonding strength between a photopassive polymer host [poly(4-vinylpyridine), or P4VP] and three azobenzene analogues capable of forming weaker (hydroxyl), stronger (carboxylic acid), or no H-bonding with P4VP. The hydroxyl-functionalized azo forms complete H-bonding complexation up to equimolar ratio with VP, whereas the COOH-functionalized azo reaches only up to 30% H-bond complexation due to competing acid dimerization that leads to partial phase separation and azo crystallization. We show that the stronger azo-polymer H-bonding nevertheless provides higher photoinduced orientation and better performance during optical surface patterning, in terms of grating depth and diffraction efficiency, when phase separation is either avoided altogether or is limited by using relatively low azo contents. These results demonstrate the importance of the H-bonding strength on the photoresponse of azopolymer complexes, as well as the need to consider the interplay between different intermolecular interactions that can affect complexation.

Laser-induced formation of "craters" and "hills" in azobenzene-containing polymethacrylate films

Functional organic polymer materials with an ability to change their surface topography in response to external contactless stimuli, like light irradiation, have attracted considerable attention. This work is devoted to the study of contactless control of the surface topography and the formation of the surface features in the amorphousized and liquid crystalline films of two azobenzene-containing polymers. The investigated polymers are side-chain polymethacrylates containing azobenzene chromophores with two lateral methyl substituents in ortho-positions and differing in the length of flexible spacer with six and ten methylene units. Two lateral methyl substituents at the azobenzene chromophore ensure high photoresponses of these polymeric samples in the whole visible spectral range. Irradiation of the polymethacrylate films by focused polarized light of green (532 nm) and red (633 nm) lasers induces a specific photodeformation of the film surface. In the case of the green light formation of circular "craters" with anisotropic borders was found, whereas for the red light highly asymmetric "hills" were observed. The possible mechanisms of the surface topography formation and their features are discussed.

Design of Collective Motions from Synthetic Molecular Switches, Rotors, and Motors

Precise control over molecular movement is of fundamental and practical importance in physics, biology, and chemistry. At nanoscale, the peculiar functioning principles and the synthesis of individual molecular actuators and machines has been the subject of intense investigations and debates over the past 60 years. In this review, we focus on the design of collective motions that are achieved by integrating, in space and time, several or many of these individual mechanical units together. In particular, we provide an in-depth look at the intermolecular couplings used to physically connect a number of artificial mechanically active molecular units such as photochromic molecular switches, nanomachines based on mechanical bonds, molecular rotors, and light-powered rotary motors. We highlight the various functioning principles that can lead to their collective motion at various length scales. We also emphasize how their synchronized, or desynchronized, mechanical behavior can lead to emerging functional properties and to their implementation into new active devices and materials.

Tunable Surface Patterning of Azopolymer by Vectorial Holography: The Role of Photoanisotropies in the Driving Force

The capability to pattern polymer surfaces at different length scales is an important goal in different research fields, including display technologies, microelectronics, optics, as well as biorelated and medical science. However, the ability to optically and dynamically manipulate topography is a key feature enabling remote control of associated effects/processes mediated by the surface. Azopolymers are largely investigated to this aim based on their sensitivity to optical fields and reconfigurability capabilities. In this work, surface relief formation induced by polarization patterns on an amorphous azopolymer structurally engineered to have large photoinduced birefringence has been investigated both experimentally and theoretically. Based on the different light polarization patterns, depth and shape of the relief grating can be controlled. An optically induced gradient force model that includes both the spatial distribution and the anisotropy of the material permittivity has been theoretically analyzed. The proposed approach is able to explain the experimental results and to overcome the limitation of existing models.

Light-regulated molecular diffusion in a liquid crystal network

Photo-responsive liquid crystal polymer networks offer promising means to generate useful functional devices, but many of them focus on their mechanical response so as to generate surface features or shape change. Here, we investigate the photomechanical effect of the polymer network for molecular transport purposes. Dual wavelength illumination of an azobenzene-functionalized cholesteric liquid crystal polymer film produces excess free volume within the film, which results in an accelerated molecular diffusion through the film. Moreover, the polarization of the UV light exposure on the cholesteric network plays an important role in a remarkable enhancement of molecular diffusion. When linearly polarized UV light rotates along with the twist of the helical axis of the cholesteric polymer, excess free volume forms sequentially from the diffusion network toward the dry network in the polymer. It works in concert with the concentration gradient of the diffusant and greatly improves the diffusion through the film.

Controlled Placement of Microparticles at the Water-Liquid Crystal Elastomer Interface

Controlled placement of microparticles is of prime importance in production of microscale superstructures. In this work, we demonstrate the remote control of microparticle placement using a photoactivated surface profile of a liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) coating. We employ light-responsive LCEs with preimposed patterns of molecular orientation (director) in the plane of coating. Upon UV illumination, these in-plane director distortions translate into deterministic topographic change of the LCE coating. Microparticles placed at the interface between the LCE coating and water, guided by gravity, gather at the bottom of photoinduced troughs. The effect is reversible: when the substrates are irradiated with visible light, the coatings become flat and the microparticle arrays disorganize again. The proposed noncontact manipulation of particles by photoactivated LCEs may be useful in development of drug delivery or tissue engineering applications.

Reversible Photo- and Thermoresponsive, Self-Assembling Azobenzene Containing Zwitterionic Polymers

Commercially available azo dyes bearing amino groups were grafted to zwitterionic copolymers composed of cyclic anhydride functionality. The zwitterionic copolymers were prepared for the first time by polymerizing sulfobetaine (SB) monomer with maleic anhydride (MA) under conventional free radical polymerization as well as reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Poly(SB- co-MA) self-assembled in deionized water. Azobenzene grafted zwitterionic poly((SB- co-MA)- g-Azo) exhibited multiresponsive behavior. As confirmed by UV-vis spectroscopy, trans → cis isomerization of the azo group was responsible for the photo- and thermal responsive behavior. The photoisomerization was reversible, and no photoaging was detected during the repeated exposure to UV and visible light. The water-soluble nature of photoresponsive azo dye grafted copolymers makes it suitable for applications in biological systems.

Re- and Preconfigurable Multistable Visible Light Responsive Surface Topographies

Light responsive materials that are able to change their shape are becoming increasingly important. However, preconfigurable bistable or even multi-stable visible light responsive coatings have not been reported yet. Such materials will require less energy to actuate and will have a longer lifetime. Here, it is shown that fluorinated azobenzenes can be used to create rewritable and pre-configurable responsive surfaces that show multi-stable topographies. These surface structures can be formed and removed by using low intensity green and blue light, respectively. Multistable preconfigured surface topographies can also be created in the absence of a mask. The method allows for full control over the surface structures as the topographical changes are directly linked to the molecular isomerization processes. Preliminary studies reveal that these light responsive materials are suitable as adaptive biological surfaces.

Light-Induced Deformation of Azobenzene-Containing Colloidal Spheres: Calculation and Measurement of Opto-Mechanical Stresses

We report on light-induced deformation of colloidal spheres consisting of azobenzene-containing polymers. The colloids of the size between 60 nm and 2 μm in diameter were drop casted on a glass surface and irradiated with linearly polarized light. It was found that colloidal particles can be deformed up to ca. 6 times of their initial diameter. The maximum degree of deformation depends on the irradiation wavelength and intensity, as well as on colloidal particles size. On the basis of recently proposed theory by Toshchevikov et al. [ J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 2017 , 8 , 1094 ], we calculated the opto-mechanical stresses (ca. 100 MPa) needed for such giant deformations and compared them with the experimental results.

Photosensitive Cationic Azobenzene Surfactants: Thermodynamics of Hydration and the Complex Formation with Poly(methacrylic acid)

In this computational work, we investigate the photosensitive cationic surfactants with the trimethylammonium or polyamine hydrophilic head and the azobenzene-containing hydrophobic tail. The azobenzene-based molecules are known to undergo a reversible trans-cis-trans isomerization reaction when subjected to UV-visible light irradiation. Combining the density functional theory and the all-atom molecular dynamics simulations, the structural and the hydration properties of the trans- and the cis-isomers and their interaction with the oppositely charged poly(methacrylic acid) in aqueous solution are investigated. We establish and quantify the correlations of the molecular structure and the isomerization state of the surfactants and their hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity and the self-assembling altered by light. For this reason, we compare the hydration free energies of the trans- and the cis-isomers. Moreover, the investigations of the interaction strength between the azobenzene molecules and the polyanion provide additional elucidations of the recent experimental and theoretical studies on the light triggered reversible deformation behavior of the microgels and the polymer brushes loaded with azobenzene surfactants.
