Spin Frustration in Organic Radicals

Spin frustration, which results from geometric frustration and a systematical inability to satisfy all antiferromagnetic (AF) interactions between unpaired spins simultaneously, is under the spotlight for its importance in physics and materials science. Spin frustration is treated as the structural basis of quantum spin liquids (QSLs). Featuring flexible chemical structures, organic radical species exhibit great potential in building spin-frustrated molecules and lattices. So far, the reported examples of spin-frustrated organic radical compounds include triradicals, tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) radicals and derivatives, [Pd(dmit)2 ] compounds (dmit=1,3-dithiol-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate), nitronyl nitroxides, fullerenes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and other heterocyclic compounds where the spin frustration is generated intra- or intermolecularly. In this Minireview, we provide a brief summary of the reported radical compounds that possess spin frustration. The related data, including magnetic exchange coupling parameters, spin models, frustration parameters, and crystal lattices, are summarized and discussed.

Heterospin frustration in a metal-fullerene-bonded semiconductive antiferromagnet

Lithium-ion-encapsulated fullerenes (Li⁺@C₆₀) are 3D superatoms with rich oxidative states. Here we show a conductive and magnetically frustrated metal–fullerene-bonded framework {[Cu₄(Li@C₆₀)(L)(py)₄](NTf₂)(hexane)}_n (1) (L = 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(methanesulfonamido)benzene, py = pyridine, NTf₂⁻ = bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonamide anion) prepared from redox-active dinuclear metal complex Cu₂(L)(py)₄ and lithium-ion-encapsulated fullerene salt (Li⁺@C₆₀)(NTf₂⁻). Electron donor Cu₂(L)(py)₂ bonds to acceptor Li⁺@C₆₀ via eight Cu‒C bonds. Cu–C bond formation stems from spontaneous charge transfer (CT) between Cu₂(L)(py)₄ and (Li⁺@C₆₀)(NTf₂⁻) by removing the two-terminal py molecules, yielding triplet ground state [Cu₂(L)(py)₂]⁺(Li⁺@C₆₀^•−), evidenced by absorption and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra, magnetic properties and quantum chemical calculations. Moreover, Li⁺@C₆₀^•− radicals (S = ½) and Cu²⁺ ions (S = ½) interact antiferromagnetically in triangular spin lattices in the absence of long-range magnetic ordering to 1.8 K. The low-temperature heat capacity indicated that compound 1 is a potential candidate for an S = ½ quantum spin liquid (QSL).

Conductive and magnetically frustrated solids may enable the development of high-performance molecule-based spintronic devices. Here the authors report a conductive and magnetically frustrated metal–fullerene-bonded framework prepared from a redox-active dinuclear copper complex and lithium ion-encapsulated fullerenes.

Ground State, Magnetization Process and Bipartite Quantum Entanglement of a Spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg Model on Planar Lattices of Interconnected Trigonal Bipyramids

The ground state, magnetization scenario and the local bipartite quantum entanglement of a mixed spin-1/2 Ising–Heisenberg model in a magnetic field on planar lattices formed by identical corner-sharing bipyramidal plaquettes is examined by combining the exact analytical concept of generalized decoration-iteration mapping transformations with Monte Carlo simulations utilizing the Metropolis algorithm. The ground-state phase diagram of the model involves six different phases, namely, the standard ferrimagnetic phase, fully saturated phase, two unique quantum ferrimagnetic phases, and two macroscopically degenerate quantum ferrimagnetic phases with two chiral degrees of freedom of the Heisenberg triangular clusters. The diversity of ground-state spin arrangement is manifested themselves in seven different magnetization scenarios with one, two or three fractional plateaus whose values are determined by the number of corner-sharing plaquettes. The low-temperature values of the concurrence demonstrate that the bipartite quantum entanglement of the Heisenberg spins in quantum ferrimagnetic phases is field independent, but twice as strong if the Heisenberg spin arrangement is unique as it is two-fold degenerate.

Peculiarities in pseudo-transitions of a mixed spin-(1/2, 1) Ising-Heisenberg double-tetrahedral chain in an external magnetic field

Recently, it has been rigorously verified that several one-dimensional (1D) spin models may exhibit a peculiar pseudo-transition accompanied with anomalous response of thermodynamic quantities in a close vicinity of pseudo-critical temperature. In the present work we will introduce and exactly solve a mixed spin-(1/2,1) Ising-Heisenberg double-tetrahedral chain in an external magnetic field as another particular example of 1D lattice-statistical model with short-range interactions that displays a pseudo-transition of this type. The investigated model exhibits at zero temperature three ferrimagnetic phases, three frustrated phases, and one saturated paramagnetic phase. The ground-state phase diagram involves five unusual interfaces (phase boundaries), at which the residual entropy per site equals to a larger entropy of one of two coexisting phases. Four such interfaces are between a non-degenerate ferrimagnetic phase and a macroscopically degenerate frustrated phase, while one interface is between two non-degenerate ferrimagnetic phases. Though thermal excitations typically destroy all fingerprints of zero-temperature phase transitions of 1D lattice-statistical models with short-range forces, the mixed spin-(1/2,1) Ising-Heisenberg double-tetrahedral chain is quite robust with respect to thermal excitations and it displays peculiar pseudo-transitions close to all five aforementioned interfaces.

Fullerene and endometallofullerene Kagome lattices with symmetry-forced spin frustration

Salts of fullerene C₆₀˙⁻ (1) and endometallofullerene Sc₃N@I_h-C₈₀˙⁻ (2) radical anions with the Bu₃MeP⁺ cation were obtained. These radical anions form Kagome lattices with equilateral fullerene triangles. The strong antiferromagnetic coupling of spins in 1 and 2 without magnetic ordering down to 1.5–1.9 K indicates strong spin frustration.
