Structural and Electronic Properties of (TMTTF)2X Salts with Tetrahedral Anions

Control of electronic polarization via charge ordering and electron transfer: electronic ferroelectrics and electronic pyroelectrics

Ferroelectric, pyroelectric, and piezoelectric compounds whose electric polarization properties can be controlled by external stimuli such as electric field, temperature, and pressure have various applications, including ferroelectric memory materials, sensors, and thermal energy-conversion devices. Numerous polarization switching compounds, particularly molecular ferroelectrics and pyroelectrics, have been developed. In these materials, the polarization switching usually proceeds via ion displacement and reorientation of polar molecules, which are responsible for the change in ionic polarization and orientational polarization, respectively. Recently, the development of electronic ferroelectrics, in which the mechanism of polarization change is charge ordering and electron transfer, has attracted great attention. In this article, representative examples of electronic ferroelectrics are summarized, including (TMTTF)2X (TMTTF = tetramethyl-tetrathiafulvalene, X = anion), α-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 (BEDT-TTF = bis(ethylenedithio)-tetrathiafulvalene), TTF-CA (TTF = tetrathiafulvalene, CA = p-chloranil), and [(n-C3H7)4N][FeIIIFeII(dto)3] (dto = 1,2-dithiooxalate = C2O2S2). Furthermore, polarization switching materials using directional electron transfer in nonferroelectrics, the so-called electronic pyroelectrics, such as [(Cr(SS-cth))(Co(RR-cth))(μ-dhbq)](PF6)3 (dhbq = deprotonated 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone, cth = 5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraaza-cyclotetradecane), are introduced. Future prospects are also discussed, particularly the development of new properties in polarization switching through the manipulation of electronic polarization in electronic ferroelectrics and electronic pyroelectrics by taking advantage of the inherent properties of electrons.

Pressure-Induced Superconductivity of the Quasi-One-Dimensional Organic Conductor (TMTTF)2TaF6

We investigated the superconductivity of (TMTTF)2TaF6 (TMTTF: tetramethyl-tetrathiafulvalene) by conducting resistivity measurements under high pressure up to 8 GPa. A cubic anvil cell (CAC) pressure generator, which can produce hydrostatic high-pressure, was used for this study. Since the generalized temperature-pressure (T-P) diagram of (TMTCF)2X (C = Se, S, X: monovalent anion) based on (TMTTF)2PF6 (TCO = 70 K and spin-Peierls: SP, TSP = 15 K) was proposed by Jérome, exploring superconductivity states using high-pressure measurement beyond 4 GPa has been required to confirm the universality of the electron-correlation variation under pressure in (TMTTF)2X (TMTTF)2TaF6, which has the largest octahedral-symmetry counter anion TaF6 in the (TMTTF)2X series, possesses the highest charge-ordering (CO) transition temperature (TCO = 175 K) in (TMTTF)2X and demonstrates an anti-ferromagnetic transition (TAF = 9 K) at ambient pressure. A superconducting state in (TMTTF)2TaF6 emerged after a metal-insulator transition was suppressed with increasing external pressure. We discovered a superconducting state in 5 ≤ P ≤ 6 GPa from Tc = 2.1 K to 2.8 K, whose pressure range is one-third narrower than that of X = SbF6 (5.4 ≤ P ≤ 9 GPa). In addition, when the pressures with maximum SC temperatures are compared between the PF6 and the TaF6 salts, we found that (TMTTF)2TaF6 has a 0.75 GPa on the negative pressure side in the T-P phase diagram of (TMTTF)2PF6.

Tuning Charge Order in (TMTTF)2X by Partial Anion Substitution

In the quasi-one-dimensional (TMTTF)2X compounds with effectively quarter-filled bands, electronic charge order is stabilized from the delicate interplay of Coulomb repulsion and electronic bandwidth. The correlation strength is commonly tuned by physical pressure or chemical substitution with stoichiometric ratios of anions and cations. Here, we investigate the charge-ordered state through partial substitution of the anions in (TMTTF)2[AsF6]1−x[SbF6]x with x≈0.3, determined from the intensity of infrared vibrations, which is sufficient to suppress the spin-Peierls state. Our dc transport experiments reveal a transition temperature TCO = 120 K and charge gap ΔCO=430 K between the values of the two parent compounds (TMTTF)2AsF6 and (TMTTF)2SbF6. Upon plotting the two parameters for different (TMTTF)2X, we find a universal relationship between TCO and ΔCO yielding that the energy gap vanishes for transition temperatures TCO≤60 K. While these quantities indicate that the macroscopic correlation strength is continuously tuned, our vibrational spectroscopy results probing the local charge disproportionation suggest that 2δ is modulated on a microscopic level.

Deuteration Effects on the Transport Properties of (TMTTF)2X Salts

The electronic properties in the quasi-one-dimensional Fabre salts are strongly affected by electronic correlations along the molecular stacks, but also by the interactions with the anions located in a cage that is formed by the methyl end groups. We systematically compare the charge transport in deuterated and protonated (TMTTF)2X salts with the anions X = Br, PF6, SbF6, and ClO4, ranging from Mott and Efros–Shklovskii variable-range hopping to activated band transport with a temperature dependent energy gap. The strong dependence of charge localization and ordering on the anion size and deuteration confirms the subtle structural involvement of the anions in the charge transport along the TMTTF stack.

One-Dimensional Alternating Extended Hubbard Model at Quarter-Filling and Its Applications to Structural Instabilities of Organic Conductors

The one-dimensional extended Hubbard model with lattice dimerization and alternated site potentials is analyzed using the renormalization group method. The coupling of electrons to structural degrees of freedom such as the anion lattice and acoustic phonons is investigated to obtain the possible instabilities against the formation of lattice superstructures. Applications of the theory to anionic and spin-Peierls instabilities in the Fabre and Bechgaard salts series of organic conductors and ordered alloys are presented and discussed.

Interfacial charge transfer enhancement via formation of binary molecular assemblies on electronically corrugated boron nitride

Using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) in conjunction with finite element simulation, we investigate the interfacial behaviors in single-component zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) and hexadecafluorinated zinc phthalocyanine (F16ZnPc) molecular overlayers as well as their 1 : 1 mixed-phase superstructures on h-BN/Cu(111). We show that the formation of the binary molecular superstructure drastically increases the charge transfer between F16ZnPc molecules and the substrate, which is attributed to the greater electrostatic stability of the binary assembly compared to that of the pure phase. This study highlights the significant complication in the design of donor-acceptor molecular thin films as the presence of the substrate, even a weakly interacting one, such as h-BN/metal, can still perturb the intermolecular charge transfer and thereby the physical behaviors of the hybrid system via interfacial processes.
