YOLOX-based blue laser weeding robot in corn field

A YOLOX convolutional neural network-based weeding robot was designed for weed removal in corn seedling fields, while verifying the feasibility of a blue light laser as a non-contact weeding tool. The robot includes a tracked mobile platform module, a weed identification module, and a robotic arm laser emitter module. Five-degree-of-freedom robotic arm designed according to the actual weeding operation requirements to achieve precise alignment of the laser. When the robot is in operation, it uses the texture and shape of the plants to differentiate between weeds and corn seedlings. The robot then uses monocular ranging to calculate the coordinates of the weeds using the triangle similarity principle, and it controls the end actuator of the robotic arm to emit the laser to kill the weeds. At a driving speed of 0.2 m·s^-1 on flat ground, the weed robot's average detection rate for corn seedlings and weeds was 92.45% and 88.94%, respectively. The average weed dry weight prevention efficacy was 85%, and the average seedling injury rate was 4.68%. The results show that the robot can accurately detect weeds in corn fields, and the robotic arm can precisely align the weed position and the blue light laser is effective in removing weeds.

The benefits to sub-Saharan Africa of the biological control of weeds: already considerable, but could be far greater

Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is climatically diverse, with many biomes. Many species of invasive alien plants (IAPs) are present, with severe negative impacts that largely remain unquantified. Importation biological weed control (IBWC) has been practiced on the continent since the early 20th century, with some notable successes. Weed biocontrol agents (WBA) (141 species) have been released in 30 countries on 69 weed species, and spread to a further eight countries. South Africa has the most active IBWC program, while several projects are underway in other countries, involving either the release of WBA or monitoring of their spread and impact. However, given the large and increasing footprint of IAPs, and the poor prospects for their successful management using other control methods, we discuss reasons for the relatively low uptake of IBWC in SSA, and suggest ways to increase this.

The alignment of projects dealing with wetland restoration and alien control: A challenge for conservation management in South Africa

An inventory of wetland vegetation across the country generated a list of the most common invasive alien plants across South Africa. Many of the plants on that list do not correspond with the priorities in the programmes for alien control across the country, as they are not listed on a government produced list that guides the priorities for alien control. We explore the reasons for this situation. We argue that because wetlands are such important parts of the landscape, invasive aliens in wetlands are of special concern, and there should be more alignment between alien control programmes and wetland rehabilitation programmes. This alignment starts by considering the full number of species that form a threat to wetland habitats, but also considers which pesticides to use, erosion and recolonisation in wetlands, planting indigenous vegetation after aliens have been removed, and strategising by working from upstream to downstream. Existing alien control programmes for specific grasses (some relatively new to the country and in the phase of early detection) and floating aquatic plants may guide how to tackle the invasions of grasses and forbs that have been established in South African wetlands for an extended period of time.
