Remote Gait Type Classification System Using Markerless 2D Video

Gait Impairment Analysis Using Silhouette Sinogram Signals and Assisted Knowledge Learning

The analysis of body motion is a valuable tool in the assessment and diagnosis of gait impairments, particularly those related to neurological disorders. In this study, we propose a novel automated system leveraging artificial intelligence for efficiently analyzing gait impairment from video-recorded images. The proposed methodology encompasses three key aspects. First, we generate a novel one-dimensional representation of each silhouette image, termed a silhouette sinogram, by computing the distance and angle between the centroid and each detected boundary points. This process enables us to effectively utilize relative variations in motion at different angles to detect gait patterns. Second, a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D CNN) model is developed and trained by incorporating the consecutive silhouette sinogram signals of silhouette frames to capture spatiotemporal information via assisted knowledge learning. This process allows the network to capture a broader context and temporal dependencies within the gait cycle, enabling a more accurate diagnosis of gait abnormalities. This study conducts training and an evaluation utilizing the publicly accessible INIT GAIT database. Finally, two evaluation schemes are employed: one leveraging individual silhouette frames and the other operating at the subject level, utilizing a majority voting technique. The outcomes of the proposed method showed superior enhancements in gait impairment recognition, with overall F1-scores of 100%, 90.62%, and 77.32% when evaluated based on sinogram signals, and 100%, 100%, and 83.33% when evaluated based on the subject level, for cases involving two, four, and six gait abnormalities, respectively. In conclusion, by comparing the observed locomotor function to a conventional gait pattern often seen in healthy individuals, the recommended approach allows for a quantitative and non-invasive evaluation of locomotion.

A proposed computer vision model for running gait assessment

Running gait assessment is critical in performance optimization and injury prevention. Traditional approaches to running gait assessment are inhibited by unnatural running environments (e.g., indoor lab), varied assessor (i.e., subjective experience) and high costs with traditional reference standard equipment. Thus, development of valid, reproduceable and low-cost approaches are key. Use of wearables such as inertial measurement units have shown promise but despite their flexible use in any environment and reduced cost, they often retain complexities such as connectivity to mobile platforms and stringent attachment protocols. Here, we propose a non-wearable camera-based approach to running gait assessment, focusing on identification of initial contact events within a runner's stride. We investigated different artificial intelligence and object tracking approaches to determine the optimal methodology. A cohort of 40 healthy runners were video recorded (240FPS, multi-angle) during 2-minute running bouts on a treadmill. Validation of the proposed approach is obtained from comparison to manually labelled videos. The computing vision approach can accurately identify initial contact events (ICC(2,1) = 0.902).

Pathological-Gait Recognition Using Spatiotemporal Graph Convolutional Networks and Attention Model

Walking is an exercise that uses muscles and joints of the human body and is essential for understanding body condition. Analyzing body movements through gait has been studied and applied in human identification, sports science, and medicine. This study investigated a spatiotemporal graph convolutional network model (ST-GCN), using attention techniques applied to pathological-gait classification from the collected skeletal information. The focus of this study was twofold. The first objective was extracting spatiotemporal features from skeletal information presented by joint connections and applying these features to graph convolutional neural networks. The second objective was developing an attention mechanism for spatiotemporal graph convolutional neural networks, to focus on important joints in the current gait. This model establishes a pathological-gait-classification system for diagnosing sarcopenia. Experiments on three datasets, namely NTU RGB+D, pathological gait of GIST, and multimodal-gait symmetry (MMGS), validate that the proposed model outperforms existing models in gait classification.

A Vision-Based System for Stage Classification of Parkinsonian Gait Using Machine Learning and Synthetic Data

Parkinson's disease is characterized by abnormal gait, which worsens as the condition progresses. Although several methods have been able to classify this feature through pose-estimation algorithms and machine-learning classifiers, few studies have been able to analyze its progression to perform stage classification of the disease. Moreover, despite the increasing popularity of these systems for gait analysis, the amount of available gait-related data can often be limited, thereby, hindering the progress of the implementation of this technology in the medical field. As such, creating a quantitative prognosis method that can identify the severity levels of a Parkinsonian gait with little data could help facilitate the study of the Parkinsonian gait for rehabilitation. In this contribution, we propose a vision-based system to analyze the Parkinsonian gait at various stages using linear interpolation of Parkinsonian gait models. We present a comparison between the performance of a k-nearest neighbors algorithm (KNN), support-vector machine (SVM) and gradient boosting (GB) algorithms in classifying well-established gait features. Our results show that the proposed system achieved 96-99% accuracy in evaluating the prognosis of Parkinsonian gaits.
