Diabetic Retinopathy and Diabetic Macular Edema Detection Using Ensemble Based Convolutional Neural Networks

DEC-DRR: deep ensemble of classification model for diabetic retinopathy recognition

Most diabetes patients are liable to have diabetic retinopathy (DR); however, the majority of them might not be even aware of the ailment. Therefore, early detection and treatment of DR are necessary to prevent vision loss. But, avoiding DR is not a simple process. An ophthalmologist can typically identify DR through an optical evaluation of the fundus and through the evaluation of color pictures. However, due to the increased count of DR patients, this could not be possible as it consumes more time. To rectify this problem, a novel deep ensemble-based DR classification technique is developed in this work. Initially, a Wiener filter (WF) is applied for preprocessing the image. Then, the enhanced U-Net-based segmentation process is done. Subsequent to the segmentation process, features are extracted that include statistical features, inferior superior nasal temporal (ISNT), cup to disc ratio (CDR), and improved LGBP as well. Further, deep ensemble classifiers (DEC) like CNN, Bi-GRU, and DMN are used to recognize the disease. The outcomes from DMN, CNN, and Bi-GRU are then subjected to improved SLF. Additionally, the weights of DMN, CNN, and Bi-GRU are adjusted via pelican updated Tasmanian devil optimization (PU-TDO). Finally, outputs on DR (microaneurysms, hemorrhages, hard exudates, and soft exudates) are obtained. The performance of DEC + PU-TDO for diabetic retinopathy is computed over extant models with regard to different measures for four datasets. The results on accuracy using the DEC + PU-TDO scheme for the IDRID dataset is maximum around 0.975 at 90th LP while other models have less accuracy. The FPR of DEC + PU-TDO is less around 0.039 at the 90th LP for the SUSTech-SYSU dataset, while other extant models have maximum FPR.

Self-supervised category selective attention classifier network for diabetic macular edema classification

AIMS

This study aims to develop an advanced model for the classification of Diabetic Macular Edema (DME) using deep learning techniques. Specifically, the objective is to introduce a novel architecture, SSCSAC-Net, that leverages self-supervised learning and category-selective attention mechanisms to improve the precision of DME classification.

METHODS

The proposed SSCSAC-Net integrates self-supervised learning to effectively utilize unlabeled data for learning robust features related to DME. Additionally, it incorporates a category-specific attention mechanism and a domain-specific layer into the ResNet-152 base architecture. The model is trained using an ensemble of unsupervised and supervised learning techniques. Benchmark datasets are utilized for testing the model's performance, ensuring its robustness and generalizability across different data distributions.

RESULTS

Evaluation of the SSCSAC-Net on multiple datasets demonstrates its superior performance compared to existing techniques. The model achieves high accuracy, precision, and recall rates, with an accuracy of 98.7%, precision of 98.6%, and recall of 98.8%. Furthermore, the incorporation of self-supervised learning reduces the dependency on extensive labeled data, making the solution more scalable and cost-effective.

CONCLUSIONS

The proposed SSCSAC-Net represents a significant advancement in automated DME classification. By effectively using self-supervised learning and attention mechanisms, the model offers improved accuracy in identifying DME-related features within retinal images. Its robustness and generalizability across different datasets highlight its potential for clinical applications, providing a valuable tool for clinicians in diagnosing DME effectively.

Level-set based adaptive-active contour segmentation technique with long short-term memory for diabetic retinopathy classification

Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a major type of eye defect that is caused by abnormalities in the blood vessels within the retinal tissue. Early detection by automatic approach using modern methodologies helps prevent consequences like vision loss. So, this research has developed an effective segmentation approach known as Level-set Based Adaptive-active Contour Segmentation (LBACS) to segment the images by improving the boundary conditions and detecting the edges using Level Set Method with Improved Boundary Indicator Function (LSMIBIF) and Adaptive-Active Counter Model (AACM). For evaluating the DR system, the information is collected from the publically available datasets named as Indian Diabetic Retinopathy Image Dataset (IDRiD) and Diabetic Retinopathy Database 1 (DIARETDB 1). Then the collected images are pre-processed using a Gaussian filter, edge detection sharpening, Contrast enhancement, and Luminosity enhancement to eliminate the noises/interferences, and data imbalance that exists in the available dataset. After that, the noise-free data are processed for segmentation by using the Level set-based active contour segmentation technique. Then, the segmented images are given to the feature extraction stage where Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM), Local ternary, and binary patterns are employed to extract the features from the segmented image. Finally, extracted features are given as input to the classification stage where Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) is utilized to categorize various classes of DR. The result analysis evidently shows that the proposed LBACS-LSTM achieved better results in overall metrics. The accuracy of the proposed LBACS-LSTM for IDRiD and DIARETDB 1 datasets is 99.43% and 97.39%, respectively which is comparably higher than the existing approaches such as Three-dimensional semantic model, Delimiting Segmentation Approach Using Knowledge Learning (DSA-KL), K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), Computer aided method and Chronological Tunicate Swarm Algorithm with Stacked Auto Encoder (CTSA-SAE).

Research progress in artificial intelligence assisted diabetic retinopathy diagnosis

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the most common retinal vascular diseases and one of the main causes of blindness worldwide. Early detection and treatment can effectively delay vision decline and even blindness in patients with DR. In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) models constructed by machine learning and deep learning (DL) algorithms have been widely used in ophthalmology research, especially in diagnosing and treating ophthalmic diseases, particularly DR. Regarding DR, AI has mainly been used in its diagnosis, grading, and lesion recognition and segmentation, and good research and application results have been achieved. This study summarizes the research progress in AI models based on machine learning and DL algorithms for DR diagnosis and discusses some limitations and challenges in AI research.
