Short-Term Effect of a New Oral Sodium Hyaluronate Formulation on Knee Osteoarthritis: A Double-Blind, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trial

Effect of sodium hyaluronate combined with rehabilitation training on knee joint injury caused by golf

BACKGROUND

In high-intensity sports like golf, knee joints are prone to injury, leading to pain, limited mobility, and decreased quality of life. Traditional treatment methods typically involve rehabilitation exercises, but their effectiveness may be limited. In recent years, sodium hyaluronate has emerged as a widely used biomedical material in the treatment of joint diseases.

AIM

To explore the effect of sodium hyaluronate combined with rehabilitation training on pain degree, flexion range of motion and motor function of knee joint injured by golf.

METHODS

Eighty patients with knee joint injury caused by golf were randomly divided into control (group B) and observation group (group A). The group B was treated with rehabilitation training, and the group A was treated with sodium hyaluronate combined with rehabilitation training. The clinical efficacy, range of motion and function of knee joint, quality of life and inflammatory factors were compared.

RESULTS

The excellent and good rate of rehabilitation in the group A was raised than group B. At 6 weeks and 3 months after treatment, the range of motion of the two groups was raised than that before treatment, and that of the group A was raised than group B. After treatment, the scores of Lysholm and International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) in the group A were raised, and those in the group A were raised than group B. The VAS score of the two groups was reduced than that of the group B, and the SF-36 score of the group A was reduced than group B. The interleukin (IL)-1 β, IL-8 and tumor necrosis factor-α in the two groups were reduced, and those in the group A were reduced than group B.

CONCLUSION

Sodium hyaluronate combined with rehabilitation training has a good clinical effect in the treatment of patients with knee joint injury caused by golf, which relieve pain, maintain knee joint function and improve patients' life quality.

Personalized Nutritional Strategies to Reduce Knee Osteoarthritis Severity and Ameliorate Sarcopenic Obesity Indices: A Practical Guide in an Orthopedic Setting

Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is one of the most common joint diseases, especially in individuals with obesity. Another condition within this population, and which presents frequently, is sarcopenic obesity (SO), defined as an increase in body fat and a decrease in muscle mass and strength. The current paper aims to describe recent nutritional strategies which can generally improve KOA clinical severity and, at the same time, ameliorate SO indices. Searches were carried out in the PubMed and Science Direct databases and data were summarized using a narrative approach. Certain key findings have been revealed. Firstly, the screening and identification of SO in patients with KOA is important, and to this end, simple physical performance tests and anthropometric measures are available in the literature. Secondly, adherence to a Mediterranean diet and the achievement of significant body weight loss by means of low-calorie diets (LCDs) remain the cornerstone nutritional treatment in this population. Thirdly, supplementation with certain micronutrients such as vitamin D, essential and non-essential amino acids, as well as whey protein, also appear to be beneficial. In conclusion, in the current review, we presented a detailed flowchart of three different nutritional tracks that can be adopted to improve both KOA and SO based on joint disease clinical severity.

Anti-Skin-Aging Effect of a Treatment with a Cosmetic Product and a Food Supplement Based on a New Hyaluronan: A Randomized Clinical Study in Healthy Women

Hyaluronic acid (HA) has long been used for its anti-age properties, as an ingredient in both topical applications and food supplements. In this study, a novel sodium hyaluronate, based on the innovative full spectrum technology, was administered as an ingredient of a cosmetic product and as the main constituent of a food supplement to evaluate its efficacy in counteracting skin ageing signs. Seventy-five female subjects were randomly assigned to the following treatments for 4 weeks: an active food supplement and a placebo cosmetic product, an active cosmetic product and a placebo food supplement, and a combination of the two products containing the active ingredient, that is, an “In&Out” treatment. The subjects used the placebo cosmetic product for another 14 days. Improvement of all the outcome measures (skin moisturization, elasticity, firmness and profilometry) was achieved by all treatments (p < 0.05); however, the combined treatment resulted in a further amelioration of the skin aging signs with respect to the two single active treatments (p < 0.001), and such effect lasted also after the follow-up period. In conclusion, such results confirmed that the concomitant administration of hyaluronans by these two different routes represents more than an interesting approach to counteract skin aging signs.

Effect of Tai Chi exercise on lower limb function and balance ability in patients with knee osteoarthritis: A protocol of a randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND

Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a chronic degenerative joint disease commonly occurring in middle-aged and elderly people. The main clinical manifestations are joint pain, limited activity, and decreased muscle strength resulting in decreased motor control ability. Exercise therapy is an effective method to enhance muscle strength of lower limbs, while China's traditional skill Tai Chi (TC) is a combination of activity and inertia, internal and external exercise therapy. In recent years, scholars at home and abroad have found that regular TC can effectively improve patients' lower limb function and balance ability. The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of TC on lower limb function and balance ability in patients with KOA.

METHODS

This is a prospective randomized controlled clinical trial. One hundred forty-six cases of KOA patients will be randomly divided into experimental group and control group according to 1:1 ratio, 73 cases in each group, the control group: sodium hyaluronate; experimental group: TC added on the basis of the control group. Both groups will receive standard treatment for 5 weeks and will be followed up for 3 months. Observation indicators include: the western Ontario and McMaster universities osteoarthritis index; hospital for special surgery knee score; balance stability index, liver and kidney function, adverse reaction rate, etc. SPSS 23.0 software will be used for data analysis.

DISCUSSION

This study will evaluate the effects of TC on lower limb function and balance ability of patients with KOA. The results of this trial will provide a clinical basis for the selection of exercise therapy for patients with KOA.

The effect of oral low molecular weight liquid hyaluronic acid combination with glucosamine and chondroitin on knee osteoarthritis patients with mild knee pain: An 8-week randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial

BACKGROUND

The popularity of dietary supplements for knee osteoarthritis (OA) management is on the rise; however, their effects are still debated.

METHODS

This study aimed to investigate the effect of an oral low molecular weight liquid hyaluronic acid supplement in the treatment of knee OA patients with mild knee pain (visual analogue scale [VAS] ≤ 3) in Taiwan population. This was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Forty-seven subjects were enrolled and randomly allocated to either the A+HA or the placebo groups. The subjects were required to drink a bottle contained 20 mL of A+HA or placebo daily throughout an 8-week study period. The efficacy was assessed by using the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) and the 36-item Short Form Survey (SF-36).

RESULTS

At Week 8, significant reductions from baseline in the WOMAC pain (-2.6 ± 1.68, P < .0001), stiffness (-1.2 ± 1.50, P = .007), physical function (-5.8 ± 4.39, P < .0001), and total (-9.4 ± 5.82, P < .0001) scores were observed in the A+HA group but not in the placebo group. Significant differences in the mean change of WOMAC scores from baseline at Week 8 between groups were detected (P < .01). At Week 8, the A+HA group also showed significant improvements in SF-36 physical functioning (2.7 ± 3.10, P = .001) and bodily pain (0.7 ± 1.50, P < .05) domains. Although the A+HA group had a higher increase in the SF-36 total score than the placebo group but the difference was not statistically significant (2.1 ± 12.75 vs 0.3 ± 19.66, P = .12).

CONCLUSIONS

Oral administration of low molecular weight liquid HA appeared to be effective for knee OA patients with mild knee pain (VAS ≤ 3) in the relief of knee OA symptoms, particularly in pain and physical function.Clinical Trial Registration: NCT04352322.
