Abstract
Introduction Globally, oral health diseases surpass all other non-communicable diseases in prevalence; however, they are not well studied in underserved regions, where accessibility to dental services and oral health education is disparately worse. In Ecuador, further research is needed to understand such disparities better. We aimed to assess the effect of oral health disease on individuals' quality of life and how social disparities and cultural beliefs shape this. Methods Individuals 18 or older receiving care at mobile or worksite clinics from May to October 2023 were included. A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving semi-structured interviews, Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) measures, and extra-oral photographs (EOP). Results The sample (n = 528) included mostly females (56.25%) with a mean age of 34.4 ± 9.44. Most participants (88.26%) reported brushing at least twice daily, and less than 5% reported flossing at least once per day. The median OHRQoL score was 4 (min-max), significantly higher among individuals ≥40 years old, holding high school degrees, or not brushing or flossing regularly (p < 0.05). Identified barriers to good oral health included affordability, time, and forgetfulness. Participants not receiving care with a consistent provider reported fear as an additional barrier. Participants receiving worksite dental services reported these barriers to be alleviated. Dental providers were the primary source of oral hygiene education. Most participants reported oral health concerns, most commonly pain, decay, dysphagia, and halitosis - consistent with EOP analysis. Discussion Findings underscore a need for multi-level interventions to advance oral health equity.

Abstract
Oral health plays a significant role in the quality of life and overall well-being of the aging population. However, age-related changes in oral health are not well understood due to challenges with current animal models. In this study, we analyzed the oral health and microbiota of a short-lived non-human primate (i.e., marmoset), as a step towards establishing a surrogate for studying the changes that occur in oral health during human aging. We investigated the oral health of marmosets using cadaveric tissues in three different cohorts: young (aged ≤6 years), middle-aged, and older (>10 years) and assessed the gingival bacterial community using analyses of the V3-V4 variable region of 16S rRNA gene. The oldest cohort had a significantly higher number of dental caries, increased dental attrition/erosion, and deeper periodontal pocket depth scores. Oral microbiome analyses showed that older marmosets had a significantly greater abundance of Escherichia-Shigella and Propionibacterium, and a lower abundance of Agrobacterium/Rhizobium at the genus level. Alpha diversity of the microbiome between the three groups showed no significant differences; however, principal coordinate analysis and non-metric multidimensional scaling analysis revealed that samples from middle-aged and older marmosets were more closely clustered than the youngest cohort. In addition, linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEFSe) identified a higher abundance of Esherichia-Shigella as a potential pathogenic biomarker in older animals. Our findings confirm that changes in the oral microbiome are associated with a decline in oral health in aging marmosets. The current study suggests that the marmoset model recapitulates some of the changes in oral health associated with human aging and may provide opportunities for developing new preventive strategies or interventions which target these disease conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The concept of sleep bruxism (SB) has evolved exponentially over the past several decades. Many theories and hypotheses have been proposed as to the definition, pathophysiology, and management of SB, from the early 1960s through the present. The role of peripheral factors, such as dental occlusion, in the pathogenesis of SB has been discarded. TYPES OF STUDIES REVIEWED The authors searched several electronic databases (ie, PubMed, Google Scholar, Web of Science, Embase, and Ovid MEDLINE) for studies on bruxism. The search was conducted from January 1961 through May 2023 and yielded 4,612 articles, of which 312 were selected for comprehensive review after eliminating duplicates and nonfocused articles. RESULTS There has been an evident progressive shift from the role of peripheral factors, such as dental occlusion, to more central factors, such as the involvement of a central pattern generator as well as the autonomic nervous system, in the genesis of bruxing movements. There is continued robust interest in the dental community to elucidate the contributing factors involved in SB. CONCLUSIONS AND PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS The neurophysiology of SB appears to be leaning more toward central rather than peripheral factors. There is increasing evidence of the role of the autonomic nervous system, genetics, and comorbidities in the genesis of SB. The scientific literature seems to refute the role of dental occlusion in the causation of bruxing movements. As per the literature, there has been a paradigm shift in the definition and genesis of SB and its possible dental implications and management, which also highlights the need for succinct scientific studies in this regard.

Abstract
This case report details the esthetic rehabilitation of a 32-year-old male patient suffering from sleep bruxism, primarily manifesting as a fracture and significant loss of tooth structure in the anterior maxillary central incisors. To address these concerns, the patient underwent a restorative treatment involving the application of semidirect resin composite veneers on the maxillary incisors and direct resin composite restoration on the incisal regions of the maxillary canines. This approach not only restored the functional integrity of the teeth but also significantly enhanced the patient's esthetic appearance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This paper explores dental diseases and wear as a proxy for dietary patterns in Hellenistic-early Roman Menainon. MATERIALS This study includes 166 individuals (4th-1st c. BCE). METHODS Carious lesions, dental calculus, antemortem tooth loss, and dental wear were recorded to explore male-female and adult-juvenile differences, and to position Menainon in the broader Hellenistic/early Roman world through comparisons with published data from other sites. RESULTS Males and females showed similar rates of dental diseases. Dental wear, in contrast, was systematically greater in males. Caries rates were high in both adults and juveniles, but adults showed more calculus. The population from Menainon had higher frequencies for calculus and carious lesions compared to contemporary Italian and Greek assemblages, and a similar frequency for antemortem tooth loss. CONCLUSION Some sex-related differences in the dietary patterns of the Menainon population were visible but small. The diet of adults and juveniles must have been similar in terms of carbohydrate consumption but different with regard to protein consumption. The high frequency of carious lesions and calculus compared to other Greco-Roman sites suggests that this population must have had good access to dietary resources (protein and carbohydrates). SIGNIFICANCE This paper provides insights on gender (sex-related) and age divisions in the Hellenistic/early Roman society through the exploration of food consumption in a Sicilian assemblage. LIMITATIONS Dividing the assemblage by sex and age group reduced considerably the sample size. SUGGESTIONS FOR FURTHER RESEARCH Stable isotopes and dental microwear analyses should be used to investigate dietary patterns further.

Abstract
Teeth in the mouth of vertebrates represent the modified descendants of bony dermal plates of ancestral fishes. Dental disorders, which are deviations of dental tissues origins, are derived from any or all of the dental tissues; enamel, dentin or cementum, and include dental abnormalities and diseases. These disorders can be influenced by genetic or environmental factors, or an interplay of both factors. This article reviews disorders that have been reported in both wild and domestic pigs and the frequency of occurrence of these conditions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To demonstrate the use of a complete digital workflow for a full mouth rehabilitation in a severely worn dentition. CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS The present case report successfully rehabilitated a full-mouth case of a severely worn dentition based on the use of digital technologies, making the diagnosis and treatment process faster, accurate and less expensive. A long-lasting esthetic and functional result are showed after 30-months follow up. CONCLUSIONS An appropriate knowledge on dental erosion and oral rehabilitation, combined with a digital dentistry approach could lead the clinician to deliver a fast, accurate and predictable noninvasive restorative treatment in cases like the one described. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Bruxism-based severely worn dentition is being found more often in population. In this situation, a detailed diagnosis and tailored treatment are mandatory to obtain a predictable treatment outcome. In this sense, the development of adhesive dentistry, new restorative materials and the incorporation of digital technologies can create a predictable synergy to rehabilitate these types of patients with a modern and less invasive approach.

Abstract
Dental health is closely linked to an individual's health and diet. This bioarcheological study presents dental caries and stable isotope data obtained from prehistoric individuals (n = 101) from three Early Neolithic sites (c. 5500-4800 BCE) in central Germany. Dental caries and ante-mortem tooth loss (AMTL) were recorded and related to life history traits such as biological sex and age at death. Further, we correlate evidence on caries to carbon and nitrogen isotope data obtained from 83 individuals to assess the relationship between diet and caries. In 68.3% of the adults, carious lesions were present, with 10.3% of teeth affected. If AMTL is considered, the values increase by about 3%. The prevalence of subadults (18.4%) was significantly lower, with 1.8% carious teeth. The number of carious teeth correlated significantly with age but not sex. The isotopic data indicated an omnivorous terrestrial diet composed of domestic plants and animal derived protein but did not correlate with the prevalence of carious lesions. The combined evidence from caries and isotope analysis suggests a prevalence of starchy foods such as cereals in the diet of these early farmers, which aligns well with observations from other Early Neolithic sites but contrasts to Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Age populations in Germany.

Abstract
Non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) are characterized by a loss of hard dental tissue near the cement-enamel junction with multifactorial etiology. The aim of this study was to demonstrate that occlusal factors as attrition, malocclusion, and bruxism, and mental disorders as depression, stress, and anxiety are involved in the etiology of NCCLs. Salivary samples and clinical data of 340 individuals selected from 6,112 participants were obtained from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine Dental Registry and DNA Repository project. The affected group was formed by individuals with NCCL (34 females, 34 males, mean age 55.34 years). In addition, the comparison group was formed by individuals without NCCL (136 females, 136 males, mean age 55.14 years). Eleven single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) previously associated with mental disorders were genotyped and tested for association with NCCLs. When all occlusal factors were combined there was found a significant association with NCCL (p = 0.000001/adjusted OR 4.38, 95% CI 2.50-7.69). Attrition (OR 3.56, 95% CI 2.00-6.32) and malocclusion (OR 5.09, 95% CI 1.65-15.68) as separate variables showed statistically significant associations with NCCL. There was a significant difference in stress history between the two groups (OR 2.17, 95% CI 1.08-4.39). No associations between NCCLs and the SNPs selected were found. However, when the occlusal factors were analyzed as covariates, associations were found between bruxism and seven of the selected SNPs. Our results suggest that occlusal factors might be associated with NCCLs.

Abstract
Since 1966 the term “tribology” has integrated different topics like friction, lubrication and wear. After a few years, interest in this type of phenomena rapidly spread out around the world of biology and medicine, determining a new research area defined as biotribology. This commentary is conceived within this framework with the aim of underlining the close link between tribology and dentistry regarding both physiological and restorative issues. The contact between teeth requires investigation into their tribological behavior focusing on the enamel wear process against natural teeth and/or artificial teeth, allowing us to obtain useful information on the tribological behavior of restorative materials. Thus, tested materials may be natural teeth, restorative materials (metal alloys, ceramics, composites) or both. This work aims to make a contribution to underlining the need for greater standardization of tribological experimental procedures as well as to obtaining more homogeneous and indicative results on the tested tribo systems.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This pilot study was planned to analyze masticatory activation in bruxism patients with and without attrition by ultrasonographic evaluation of mandibular adductor muscles. METHODS Sixty bruxism patients (group 1: 30 without attrition, group 2: 30 with attrition) and an age-sex matched control of 30 (group 3) were clinically examined. The thickness of bilateral temporalis and masseter muscles during clench and rest was measured by ultrasonography. RESULTS The mean muscle thicknesses were higher in bruxing patients than in controls. In group 2, the clench/rest ratio (C/R) of the right and left masseter and temporal muscles were higher than the control group (p = 0.03, p = 0.01, p = 0.04, p = 0.03, respectively). CONCLUSION The thickness of chewing muscles increases with bruxism. The occlusal forces in the teeth increase, and therefore, the tooth wear increases. Ultrasonographic muscle thickness can be used to determine muscle activity in bruxism patients.
